Slovakia’s Miroslav LajÄak was on Tuesday appointed head of the European External Action Service (EEAS) for Russia, Eastern Neighborhood and the W. Balkans. The former Slovak FM previously served as his country’s ambassador to Serbia and also as high representative of the international community in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

“Slovakia to recognize Kosovo if Serbia agrees”
Slovakia will recognize Kosovo only if Belgrade agrees with it previously, Slovak Prime Minister Iveta RadiÄova says. She told Belgrade-based daily VeÄernje Novosti that Slovakia, which is one of the five European Union countries that have not recognized the Kosovo Albanian UDI, fully supports Serbia’s European integrations.
Slovakia: K. Albanian to be tried in absentia
A court in the Slovak town of Prešov has decided to try in absentia Kosovo Albanian Baki Sadiki, who is accused of smuggling 120 kg of cocaine.
Slovakia did not manage to have the suspect, who holds a Slovak passport, extradited from Kosovo where he is hiding. The trial will begin on January 24, 2011.
Dzurinda: Slovakia won’t change stand on Kosovo
Slovak FM Mikulas Dzurinda says that Slovakia is not planning on changing its position on Kosovo but that this is not halting its European perspective.
“The goal is to establish really good relations between Belgrade and Priština. We are in favor of a dialogue and it would be good if it would truly begin,†Dzurinda said.
Slovakia considers Kosovo pullout
The Slovak Defense Ministry proposed Friday a complete withdrawal of its troops from Kosovo. If the proposal passes, 140 Slovak soldiers who are currently serving in the NATO forces in Kosovo would go home by the end of the year.
Slovakia ratifies SAA
The Slovak Parliament ratified the Stabilization and Association Agreement between Serbia and the EU on Wednesday. The National Council of the SLovak Republic adopted the agreement with only one of the 140 present MPs not voting in favor of ratifying the agreement, according to Radio Deutsche Welle.
Slovakia “never said never” on Kosovo
Slovakia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mikulas Dzurinda said on Thursday that he had never said Slovakia would never recognize Kosovo.
Slovakia has always made it clear that it takes very seriously into account the interest and stand of Serbia, he said.

A 50-year-old gunman shot and killed seven people in the Slovak capital of Bratislava today before committing suicide. The man first shot and killed a Roma family of six in their home on the outskirts of the city, to then start shooting randomly at people in the street.
Slovakia won’t recognize Kosovo
Slovak Foreign Minister Mikulas Dzurinda said that he sees no reason for his country to change its stance and to stop refusing to recognize Kosovo.
“We understand the interests of Kosovo, but we are very seriously taking into consideration the interests of Belgrade as well,†he told Slovak news agency TASR.

Slovakia’s Justice Ministry has asked Belgrade to extradite a suspected leader of the Kosovo Albanian mafia in Slovakia. Baki Sadiki is believed to be in Kosovo, and his extradition was requested from Belgrade rather than from the EU mission in Kosovo, EULEX, said reports.

Poland, Slovakia and Hungary hit by fresh floods
Thousands of people were evacuated from towns and villages in Poland, Slovakia and Hungary on Saturday as floodwaters continued to rise. In southern Poland, the Vistula River breached an embankment, putting several villages at risk. The situation in the south of the country was described as “dangerous” by Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Last month, at least 22 people died as the country experienced its worst floods in decades.
“Slovakia supports Serbia’s EU bidâ€
Foreign ministers of Serbia and Slovakia, Vuk Jeremić and Miroslav LajÄak, met on Thursday on Bratislava. They said that the EU-Western Balkans summit in Sarajevo earlier this week had confirmed the EU’s commitment to continued enlargement.
Slovakia: Law to strip ethnic Hungarians of citizenship
Slovakia has approved legislation which will allow the authorities to strip citizenship from Slovaks who become Hungarian citizens. In a tit-for tat move against Hungary, the Slovak President Ivan GaÅ¡paroviÄ on Monday signed into law legislation to allow stripping ethnic Hungarians living in the country of their Slovak citizenship, if they take on additional Hungarian citizenship.
Army could participate in two missions
Defense Minister Dragan Šutanovac said that Serbian Army soldiers could begin participating in peacekeeping mission in Lebanon and Cyrpus soon. “We have the capacities and knowledge to participate in these peacekeeping missions with our friends from Spain, Italy, Hungary and Slovakia,†Šutanovac said.
Slovakia won’t change Kosovo stance
Slovakia’s Foreign Minister Miroslav LajÄak said that his country would not be changing its stance on not recognizing Kosovo. “Our stance is clear and consistent, but not unfriendly,†LajÄak said, according to Slovakian news agency TASR.
