Google Snags Palm WebOS Director to Boost Android UX

Google hires WebOS user interface director Matias Duarte from Palm to improve the user experience for the Android operating system. Google confirmed the hire, telling eWEEK Duarte is now the user experience director for Android, but declined to provide more information. This is a big deal for Google, which has struggled to match the intuitive user experience of Apple’s popular iPhone even as it has pumped out new versions of its operating system with great speed. – Google scored a coup by hiring away Matias Duarte from Palm to improve the
user experience for smartphones, tablets and other devices based on Google’s

Sembcorp Marine unit snags $130m pre-FPSO conversion contract from Petrobras

Jurong Shipyard, the wholly-owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Marine, has secured a $130 million contract to carry out pre-conversion works on the Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC), the MT Suva, to be renamed FPSO P62 for Petrobras Netherlands B.V.

IBM LotusLive Snags Panasonic to Challenge Google in the Cloud

Challenging Google in the cloud computing market for messaging and collaboration software, IBM landed Panasonic as a customer for its LotusLive SAAS programs. More than 150,000 workers at the Japanese electronics maker will use IBM’s hosted e-mail, social networking Web conferencing, file sharing, instant messaging and project management applications. The company unseated Microsoft’s Exchange e-mail server and a number of other collaboration solutions, including IBM’s original on-premise Lotus Notes and Domino server. The news comes days before IBM kicks off Lotusphere in Orlando, Fla.
