SPS holds party congress

Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) leader Ivica Dačić has stated that the party had managed to preserve its ideology, overcome difficulties and strengthen itself.

Opening the eighth SPS Congress in Belgrade on Saturday, he said that the Congress was aimed at a comprehensive party reform in order to strengthen the SPS.

Albanian MPs begin hunger strike

22 MPs of the Albanian opposition Socialist party and 180 supports have begun a hunger strike to put pressure on the government. The striking MPs want the government to allow a partial recount of votes from the elections where irregularities were recorded, according to the opposition.

SPS to vote for Srebrenica resolution

The ruling Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) will vote for the resolution condemning the Srebrenica crimes, party leader Ivica Dačić said. He said that SPS will also support a resolution, “if there one”, condemning all other crimes committed during the war.

The body that administers Hungary’s airwaves, ORTT, has taken the two nationwide radio licences away from foreign-owned stations and given them to two local firms, one of which has links to Fidesz, the right-wing opposition party. The body’s chairman, Laszlo Majtenyi, has resigned, complaining that the decision—by delegates from Fidesz and the ruling Socialist party—broke the law. A parliamentary investigation has been blocked, prompting speculation about a political stitch-up. …

SPS official dies in car crash

Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) official Borka Vučić died when the car she was riding in hit a protective wall on the side of the highway and caught on fire. According to a television station in Kragujevac, the accident occurred when the car, in which four people were traveling, got a flat tire and the driver lost control, swerved over to the other side of the road, hit the wall, and caught fire.

Zemun elects new municipal leader

Members of the Zemun assembly have elected a new municipal president, vice-president and members of the municipal council. The ruling coalition—made up of the Serb Progressive Party (SNS), the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) and the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS)—elected Branislav Prostran (SNS), a graduate in management and private businessman, to the office of municipal president. He was formerly Zemun municipal manager.

Dačić: EU is in nation’s interest

Serbia needs to enter the EU as soon as possible, but not just because of the benefits it brings, but the whole system of values, says Ivica Dačić. Speaking at a Socialist Party of Serbia rally in Belgrade, party leader Dačić said that Serbia was within touching distance of EU candidate status and that he understood the nation’s impatience at the delays in the process.

Adoption of information law in balance

A big question mark hangs over the adoption of the Law on Public Information after the SPS announced that it would be abstaining from the parliamentary vote. MPs are due to vote on annexes and amendments to the Law on Public Information under urgent procedure. Even though voting has been scheduled for Thursday, it is still not certain whether the bill will be passed after the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) announced that it would be abstaining, as it had earlier at the cabinet vote on the issue.
