AMERICAN AQUARIUM AND SONS OF BILL “LIFE IN SHAMBLES” SPRING TOUR
2010
American Aquarium |
As complicated as life in 2010 may have become, it’s some comfort to know there are still simple guys out there
playing simple music. Simple guys that can go out any night of the week and put together a rock and roll show we
can all believe in. It was as simple as James Wilson (Sons of Bill) making contact with
BJ Barham (American
Aquarium) at the end of 2009 to propose a tour for their bands that would help further bond a growing
community of music fans around their roots/Americana/alt-country songwriting and performances. The hope is
that this will not just be another lineup at the bar, but rather a chance to celebrate a new school of bands that are
tending the vibrant traditions of rock and country music and the sense of community they can foster, especially in
hard times. As a tongue-in-cheek testament to the times, the boys in the bands thought it appropriate to call this
tour “Life in Shambles.”
The tour kicks off in Raleigh, NC on May 1 to celebrate the release of American Aquarium’s new record,
Small Town Hymns (Last Chance Records). The entourage will then continue along a three week run that covers the East Coast with each band taking the closing slot on different nights. There will certainly
be cold beers consumed, collaborations and conspiracies, and some kick ass rock and roll played at high volumes.

Mumford & Sons :: 02.11.10 :: Popscene at 330 Ritch :: San Francisco, CA
|
|
Making their San Francisco debut in the midst of their first headlining North American tour, the four lads of Mumford & Sons rocked a sold out show at Popscene at 330 Ritch in the city’s SOMA district. The group has been steadily gaining popularity over the past year since their first U.S. gigs back in the winter of 2008-09 when they were supporting fellow British folk star Laura Marling (see a recent JamBase review of Marling here). Now very much on their own, these four musicians don’t hold back for one second once they take the stage. Their show is raucous and impassioned, and all four of them look like they’re truly enjoying themselves and playing their hearts out.
Of course, they have to actually get on the stage first. At 330 Ritch this proved a lengthy process. The small club opened its doors at 9 p.m. and during a rainy night a line stretching over a block long lasted until well after ten o’clock – a testament to the young band’s sincere popularity (especially considering their debut album, Sigh No More, hadn’t even been officially released in this country). Once inside the crowd gathered intently around the small stage for another hour before finally laying eyes on Marcus Mumford and his bandmates. All grumbling about the delay turned instantly to cheers, and after a sheepish apology saying they didn’t realize there was no opening act that night the show began.
The first thing to notice about Mumford & Sons is their unique lineup – four young men standing all in a row right on the edge of the stage. From left to right were Ben Lovett on keys, frontman Marcus Mumford playing guitar and drums (at the same time), Winston Marshall on banjo and Ted Dwane playing upright bass. Set-up like this and sporting vests and collared shirts, they have the appearance of a bunch of one-man-band performers out of Mary Poppins who decided to join forces. They all sing, belting out four-part harmonies at the top of their lungs while playing the hell out of their instruments; these guys really let it rip once they get going. Mumford himself takes the lead vocal while strumming his guitar and simultaneously provides the group’s beat, stomping away on a kick drum at his feet. Keeping it mostly on the down beats and playing vigorously, Mumford’s drumming gives the band’s folk rock tunes a driving, constant rhythm that usually comes in about halfway through the song, following a quieter, ethereal opening. The songs tend to end in a barrage of violent strumming and strained voices that is nothing but joyous.
Mumford & Sons :: 02.11 :: San Francisco |
They opened the night with the title track from their debut album, promising everyone that there is love out there and “it will set you free/ Be more like the man you were made to be.” Following were three of their most popular tunes, “Awake My Soul,” “Little Lion Man” and “White Blank Page.” All three were released across two EPs the group put out in 2008 and appear again on Sigh No More, which was released in the U.K. in October of 2009 and in the U.S. on February 16. “Awake My Soul” ends with the group displaying their awesome harmonies over and over, but it is “Little Lion Man” that has sent this band across the seas to fans around the world. Mumford begins the tune alone on guitar with the banjo strumming swiftly right behind him and some sparse piano chords trickling in. At the chorus the song is fully fleshed out with everyone giving it all they’ve got. But it’s the lyrics that make this song such a hit: “It was not your fault but mine/ And it was your heart on the line/ I really fucked it up this time/ Didn’t I, my dear?” There is perhaps nothing more satisfying than singing (and I mean really, truly singing your heart out), “I really fucked it up this time.” All smiles, the quartet gave us the dirtiest word in the book in its full majestic glory, and on their tongues it comes out as musical and natural as one can imagine. I’m hard pressed to come up with a better lyrical use of the F-word, (okay, “Killing in the Name Of” by Rage Against the Machine, but certainly no acoustic band does it better than Mumford).
A few new tunes made use of a full drum kit onstage, with Mumford singing and playing on the kit and the rest switching to electric instruments. There could be a lot more of this in the future, though for now they seemed to be just experimenting with it and definitely had a better effect and sound in their acoustic lineup formation.
Having come up from a show in Los Angeles, the group professed their unanimous preference for San Francisco over SoCal and made a few S.F. references, saying they loved Mrs. Doubtfire and that Mumford had bought twin acoustic guitars and introduced the one onstage as “Mary-Kate.” If you haven’t already, give “Little Lion Man” a listen and next time Mumford & Sons comes around be sure go see one of the best things to come out of the new British folk scene.

How the well-off and well-educated pass their advantages on to their offspring
ONE of the reasons people try to get ahead is to boost their children’s chances in life. And indeed the children of the well-off and well-educated earn more and learn more than their less fortunate peers—but to an extent that varies from place to place. In Ireland and Luxembourg, sons of fathers with a university degree or the equivalent are around 70 percentage points more likely to complete tertiary education than those whose fathers failed to graduate high school. In Britain and Portugal, a still-hefty 40-percentage-point lead is dwarfed by the premium in wages commanded by those with well-educated fathers, suggesting that other factors alongside education—social networks and employment markets that disproportionately reward those at the top—contribute to the cascade of advantage through the generations too.

‘Enemy of peace’ Maulana Sufi, 2 sons arrested
PESHAWAR – Chief of the banned Tehrik-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat-e-Mohammadi (TNSM) Maulana Sufi Muhammad, who brokered a peace deal with the Taliban in Swat Valley, was arrested from a house in Sethi Town, Peshawar, on Sunday noon.
“Maulana Sufi has been arrested in the wake of threats to the ongoing peace process and a formal case against him will be registered soon,” NWFP Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said during a Press conference.
When asked that why the government arrested a person whom it had released earlier, Iftikhar said that the government had released Sufi with the hope to restore peace in Malakand. “ Now, in fact, Sufi’s activities were proving harmful to the govt’s efforts for restoring peace and writ of law in Malakand,” Iftikhar said.
Justifying the arrest of Maulana Sufi, Iftikhar said that after the launch of military action, Sufi had left his native Dir district and been residing in Peshawar and other places. During this period, there was no need to arrest Sufi as he remained silent and peaceful. But when he resumed his activities by contacting his aides and supporters and convened a meeting of TNSMÂ’s Shura, the government was left with no option other than arresting him, the minister claimed.
Iftikhar also said that Sufi had expressed his desire to go to Malakand. “All such acts on part of Maulana Sufi were harmful to peace and stability in the region affected with violence and terrorists’ activities,” Iftikhar said.
Though Iftikhar neither confirmed nor rejected the reports about the arrest of three others, his two sons and one unknown person, but the residents of Sethi Town have said that Sufi and three others were arrested during the raid.
Iftikhar also said that law-enforcement agencies would investigate Sufi and upon the completion of the investigation process a case would be registered against him. He also said that SufiÂ’s fate would be decided according to law of the land.
It may be recalled that Maulana Sufi had promised to disarm Taliban militants in an accord, signed between TSNM and the NWFP government on February 16, 2009 for the enforcement of Nizam-e-Adl Regulation. But after signing the agreement, Taliban militants, instead of honouring the commitment, had been extending their network towards adjacent areas of Buner and Lower Dir. In this regard, the minister also listed out details of Maulana SufiÂ’s post-agreement activities, speeches and remarks against the constitutional institutions like judiciary and the Parliament.
Staff Reporter from Islamabad adds: Interior Minister Rehman Malik has ordered the concerned authorities to constitute an investigation team to interrogate TNSM chief Maulana Sufi Muhammad.
APP/AFP add: The police raided City Town on GT Road and took Maulana Sufi Muhammad in their custody and shifted him to an unknown location, the NWFP Information Minister said in the Press conference.
Iftikhar said NWFP government had earlier released Maulana Sufi with hope to restore law and order situation in Swat but he instead worked against the countryÂ’s interests. He said that enemy of peace and the country would be tried in courts.
He said that the NWFP government had signed a peace deal with TNSM Chief but he did not reciprocate the governmentÂ’s goodwill gesture and instead worked to strengthen hands of anti-state elements.
“We released Sufi Muhammad for peace and was arrested again for the sake of peace,” he said. The NWFP government would take every decision in line of national interests and people, he added.
He said that peace is returning to Malakand Division and the government has achieved its objectives.
The aging Maulana Sufi had attracted public attention in 1994 when his TNSM movement got momentum and they blocked Malakand Tunnel demanding Adl regulations in Swat and Malakand Division.
“He killed a lot of people. Again he was planning for this. We will not allow anyone to destroy peace at Malakand and Swat,” Iftikhar said.
Iftikhar said Sufi was arrested for encouraging violence and terrorism. “Instead of keeping his promises by taking steps for the sake of peace, and speaking out against terrorism, he did not utter a single word against terrorists,” Iftikhar said, adding that the cleric’s stance ‘encouraged terrorism. It encouraged violence’.
Iftikhar accused Sufi of ‘again preparing to get more people killed’ and said: “We cannot let it happen. The price we have paid for the sake of peace, we cannot allow any person to disturb the peace.”
Iftikhar said Sufi would be investigated regarding his role as mediator between the government and the Taliban, and that a case would then be made based on that investigation.
Monitoring Desk adds: Sufi’s son Azmat Ullah, 12, told a foreign news agency that police arrived at his home in Sethi on the outskirts of Peshawar in four vans and took away his father and three brothers. “My father and brothers went with them without offering any resistance,” Ullah said.
One witness, local resident Mohammad Arif, said police fired a shot in the air to disperse a crowd that had gathered during the operation to arrest the cleric.
Sufi is also the father-in-law of the Taliban leader in the Swat Valley, Maulana Fazlullah.
NNI adds: Earlier in the day, in an interview with a private TV channel, Maulana Sufi said that he had migrated to Peshawar and living there just like the other displaced people.
He said he would not issue any statement without consulting with council (Shoora).
About the council meeting in Peshawar, he said no such meeting was held.
