My ideal reader makes his soul through my book: Pamuk

Orhan Pamuk4It’s not easy to describe the demeanour of Turkish novelist Orhan Pamuk as he earnestly speaks about how books have shaped his spirit, jokes about how he wanted to be a painter, cleverly dodges a question on his love life and even shares his idea of the “ideal reader”. The Nobel laureate is certainly not [...]

This is their performance last night on the Late Show with David Letterman.

TURN IT UP A LITTLE BIT HIGHER

Van Morrison

Few things hit ya in your soul like the early work of Van Morrison. For about a decade at the start of his solo career after leaving Them he seemed to possess a divining rod that lead him straight to sweet musical waters, which he ladled out with a kind hand to us thirsty cats ‘n’ kittens. There’s a sense of being on a profound journey in Van’s early catalog, a purposeful momentum that invigorates day-to-day life. This vibe is rarely more apparent than “Caravan” off 1970′s Moondance, which celebrates the road and the power of music to uplift one’s life. The repeated cries of “radio, radio” make one wanna reach for the volume and answer to his call to crank it up “so you know you got soul.” Let this one carry you into a swell-as-hell week, children.

Snap! Bonus Van for your weekday pick-me-up with the hippie gospel saunter of “Call Me Up In Dreamland” from the indestructibly great His Band and Street Choir album.

Lucero: 1372 Overton Park

LUCERO’S 1372 OVERTON PARK
OUT OCTOBER 6

BAND’S FIRST MAJOR LABEL RECORD LOOKS TO MEMPHIS SOUL INFLUENCES

Lucero

Playing between 150-200 live shows a year, Lucero has come to be known as much for their hard-touring work ethic as for their critically acclaimed records. After releasing five studio albums Lucero has managed to land a major label contract with Universal/Republic Records. The band’s new album, 1372 Overton Park, due out October 6, was produced by Ted Hutt (The Gaslight Anthem) and features horn arrangements by legendary Memphis session player Jim Spake (Al Green, John Hiatt, Solomon Burke, Cat Power). The record marks a decided turn toward the Memphis soul sound that has long influenced the band’s sound from afar.

The new album’s name comes from the address of the Memphis loft in which all four band members lived, practiced and even recorded portions of their 2003 release That Much Further West. Over recent years band members have gradually moved out leaving lead singer and guitarist Ben Nichols the sole resident of the space until word finally came down that the building would be sold and demolished. Almost as if marking the end of an era not only for the building but for the band as well, this record turns the page and signals a strong move toward the Memphis soul sound that has long served as an influence for the group.

While 1372 Overton Park serves as a love letter to Memphis and its musical heritage, the band has far from abandoned the country/rock/punk influences that they’ve become known for over their previous five records and countless tour stops. “I think the fact that we don’t claim a genre is very important to what Lucero is,” Nichols said. “There are too many rules in punk rock. Too many rules in country music. We’re hard headed and… god damn if we don’t do things the way we want to do them.”

Lucero is currently streaming “The Devil and Maggie Chascarillo” off the forthcoming album at their website here: luceromusic.com.

Film Weekly: the power behind Soul Power

Soul and funk take centre stage in this week’s podcast as Jason Solomons gets down with Stewart Levine. The legendary music producer is the man behind Soul Power, an extraordinary documentary chronicling the three-day festival in Kinshasa, Zaire pegged to the 1974 Rumble in the Jungle fight between Ali and Foreman. Levine shares how he got the idea for the concert, and how he and Hugh Masekela put together a dream ticket of performers (including Miriam Makeba, Bill Withers, BB King, Celia Cruz and main attraction James Brown) and crew (including producer Leon Gast and cameraman Albert Maysles). He explains how the venture survived the news that the fight had been postponed, and how the 450,000 feet of film footage was distilled into this joyous film.

Xan Brooks then joins Jason to review the week’s key releases: Claire Denis’s haunting 35 Shots of Rum; Bruno, Sacha Baron Cohen’s followup to Borat; and Paul Schrader’s cool biopic of the Japanese author, Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters.

And finally, Jason meets Rebecca Miller and Robin Wright Penn to talk about The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, Miller’s movie of her novel. Miller, who also wrote and directed the film, tells Jason how she managed to change Alan Arkin’s mind about playing the part of an elderly publisher who betrays his perfect wife, while Wright Penn shares what it was like to work with the veteran actor.
