Lollapalooza Chile: The Killers, JaneÂ’s, Kanye, Fatboy

CHICAGO FEST GOES TO SOUTH AMERICA

The Killers

The lineup for the inaugural Lollapalooze Chile has been announced. 50-plus acts will perform on five stages at the two-day festival set to happen Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3 in O’Higgins Park, Santiago, Chile.

“The job we did to gather these artists for 2011 was remarkable,” says fest co-organizer Perry Farrell. “Imagine gathering 60 artists while the contract ink is still wet. We put it together at a record pace as we had four months. We did not want to come to Chile with a lineup that was anything other than world-class, and my partners Marc Geiger of WME and Charles Attal of C3 have been absolutely integral to Lollapalooza Chile launching in 2011. Our selections are very animated, with much diversity. There is Chilean talent in the mix. Now that the lineup is announced here, we are going back to Chile to work on the other aspects of the festival. Our ambition is to plant a very strong seed in Chile, one that will grow over the years, and provide Santiago with an event for the ages.”

Available now for the festival are general two-day passes for $110 presale, $136 then $152; Lolla Lounge two-day VIP passes for $320 presale then $380; And beginning February 11, general admission single day tickets for $72 presale then $84 and VIP passes for $240. Dec. 27, 1831: Beagle Sets Sail With a Very Special Passenger

1831: HMS Beagle, a 10-gun, Cherokee-class brig sloop of the Royal Navy’s survey service, sets sail from Plymouth, England on its second voyage as a survey vessel.
On board, at the invitation of Beagle captain Robert FitzRoy, is a young biologist called Charles Darwin. Darwin’s account of The Voyage of the Beagle, published in 1839, establishes [...]

Madonna Hard Candy Gym Mexico Facing Shutdown

Carmakers: Fiat plays double or quits with Chrysler

Sergio Marchionne reckons that Chrysler can help save Fiat from itself and from Italy. It is a gamble, but one he has to take

IN JANUARY Fiat cars will be back on sale in America for the first time in 27 years. The tiny, retro-styled Fiat 500 will appear in the showrooms of 130 dealers across the country. It was launched at the Los Angeles motor show last week, alongside a revamped Chrysler range. Fiat’s return to America is the first visible result of what is intended to be an ever closer union with Chrysler, agreed on last year when the Detroit giant was in bankruptcy. The two companies are betting that the Fiat 500—designed by Frank Stephenson, the man behind BMW’s transatlantic success with the MINI—will also prove as popular with Americans as it has with Europeans.

Returning to a country from which Fiat was driven out by poor quality—Americans used to quip that its name stood for “Fix It Again, Tony”—is a big risk. But the reward is to get back into one of the world’s largest markets and gain the scale that will promote Fiat from a smallish European firm (albeit with a successful business in South America) to the ranks of global carmakers. Its home market in Italy is too small, and its operations there too uncompetitive, to provide the basis for long-term survival. Merging with Chrysler will mean sharing development costs and technology, but will also mean having to turn around an ailing firm with competitiveness problems of its own. In sum, Fiat is playing double or quits. …

Lollapalooza International: Chile ’11

Lollapalooza
2009 by Vann

Perry Farrell, in conjunction with Chile’s Lotus Producciones, and WME and C3 Presents–the promotional
partners
behind the North American Lollapalooza–will bring his carnival of all things alternative to an exciting new
destination, South America.

For the first time in its history, one of America’s most beloved music festivals lands overseas in Santiago,
Chile on Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3, 2011 at O’Higgins Park as the first Lollapalooza
International
. Line-up details will be available at a later date.

Similar to its Chicago home Grant Park in North America, O’Higgins Park is a gorgeous scenic locale in the middle of
a bustling urban hub. Lollapalooza International promises an eclectic lineup of top
talent from around the world, and will also partake in a “cultural exchange,” by featuring Chilean artists at
this summer’s North American Lollapalooza in Grant Park.

A Q&A with LOLLAPALOOZA’s creator PERRY FARRELL:

What inspired you to bring Lollapalooza to what many might think of as an unlikely location of a city in South
America?

PERRY FARRELL: There are a series of prerequisites when selecting a destination. Number one is space. It must be
open and lovely; scalable up to 100,000 patrons. Second is the proximity to the city. We provide the entertainment.
The city provides the culture, hotels, restaurants and clubs. Then, most important are the people. The people of
Santiago have a passion for contemporary music and lead international lifestyles. Perfect.

We understand you have made a trip to Chile and have seen the park. Can you talk about the beauty of the location?

PF: Yes, O’ Higgins Park has a gentle sloping grass viewing area with the Andes Mountains in the distance. There are
many trees for shade. One of my favorite aspects to the park is a large round discotheque that houses up to 10,000
people. It is attached to an amusement park with a roller coaster and people scream on it all day. Right now you’ll see
families spending time in the park. Little kids roaming all over.

Can music fans expect the same eclectic music that Lollapalooza is known for in America?

PF: Yes, we found that there are so many groups and artists that have never been to Chile. It’s been fun figuring out
with Lotus, C3 and WME, who will be the first to get there.

The promoter in Chile is Sebastian De La Barra of Lotus Producciones. What did you see in him that made him the
right choice to bring Lollapalooza to Chile?

PF: When first meeting Sebastian, I noted that he had a disposition reminiscent of the best promoters I have had the
pleasure to work with. He is smart, relaxed and having fun in the driver’s seat.

We understand that the festival will also feature musicians and bands from Chile. Can you elaborate on that?

PF: Local talent is essential to rounding out the experience of a Lollapalooza. Sebastian has strong opinions on who
will be best. We can not say who just yet. We are also looking to bring some of those artists out to Chicago for a
musical foreign exchange.

As with any festival in its first year, there is always a learning curve.

PF: We are confident a massive music audience is awaiting us in Santiago. What we are very interested to learn is how
widely spread the demographic will be. In Chicago we have hipsters as well as young parents with children in
attendance. It is one of the few places in the world where a generation gap doesn’t exist.

Scorpions to Return to U.S. Next Summer

HAVING JUST WRAPPED A TRIUMPHANT NORTH AMERICAN TOUR; GROUP TO HIT MEXICO AND SOUTH
AMERICA SEPTEMBER 4

Scorpions

For those who have not yet been stung by the mighty Scorpions on their latest concert tour, “The Best Is Yet To Come.”

Although the band recently wrapped a triumphant 38-show tour of North America on Saturday (8/21) in Chicago at
the (sold out in advance) Rosemont Theatre, they are now booking more U.S. shows next summer since their
overseas tour commitments had prevented them from adding more U.S. shows this year. The group will hit cities
they did not get a chance to perform in.

The Scorpions are now on a brief break and will resume their “Get Your
Sting and Blackout World Tour 2010” tour September 4 in Mexico and South America before heading back to Europe
with dates confirmed through November 27 in their German homeland.

The farewell tour by the iconic band–Klaus Meine (vocals), Matthias Jabs (lead guitar),
Rudolf Schenker (guitar), James Kottak (drums) and Pawel Maciwoda (bass)–is in
support of their latest album Sting in the Tail (Universal Music Enterprises).

In a recent interview (8/21/10) with Billboard’s Ray Waddell, lead singer Klaus Meine said, “What can I say? It’s a
celebrationÂ…We feel we owe it to our fans and ourselves to keep this energy level. What we pull off every night on
this tour, we want to keep it that way to the very last show. We don’t want to see ourselves rocking like a hurricane
when it’s not a hurricane anymore.” Of the touring climate right now, Waddell said, “Scorpions numbers are solid in
a summer where consistency is treasured.”

Kian Ann Engineering posts record full-year net profit of $13.2m

Mainboard-listed Kian Ann Engineering, one of the largest independent distributors of heavy machinery parts in Asia, announced it achieved a record profit attributable to equity holders of $13.2 million for the financial year ended 30 June 2010.

Kian Ann says the group’s performance was lifted by the gradual recovery of global economic conditions, which resulted in sales growth of 10.8% to $149.4 million in FY2010 from $134.8 million in FY2009. Improved demand from mining, forestry, palm oil and infrastructure sectors in Malaysia and countries outside Asia, especially Russia, South America and continents of Oceania, contributed to the better performance.

Golden Agri started at Buy by Bank of America-Merrill Lynch with $0.72 target

Bank of America-Merrill Lynch has started Golden Agri-Resources (E5H.SG) at Buy with $0.72 target price, based on 14x FY10-11 P/E, says Dow Jones.

BoA-Merrill Lynch says palm oil producer has largest planted area in Indonesia, is one of cheapest, most liquid CPO proxies. Tips every 1% rise in CPO price to boost earnings by 2%. Expects CPO price to pick up in 4Q10 due to strong soybean demand in South America’s biodiesel industry, less-than-expected supply.

Research house says existing yet-to-be-planted land bank, coupled with new planting rate of 30,000-50,000 ha yearly, will guarantee group’s mature land bank growth for next decade; “as agricultural land availability diminishes, Golden Agri’s huge agriland holdings will also prove to be very valuable in the future.”

Shares –0.9% at $0.53.
