Bluesfest today announced its first run of
festival sideshows for Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide based audiences. And, what an electrifying array of musical
delights it is, featuring some of the best world-class blues, roots, gospel, and soul talent announced so far for
Bluesfest 2011.

For the first show, Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band will be ably supported by the amazing funk
soul pedal-steel master guitarist Robert Randolph and the Family Band in Sydney on April 21 at the Enmore Theatre,
and Melbourne on April 22 at the Palace Theatre.

This next show is ‘A Gospel Celebration!’ with Blind Boys of Alabama featuring Aaron Neville. Opening proceedings
will be none other than Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and legendary vocalist Mavis Staples. The dates are April 20 in
Melbourne at The Palais and April 25 in Sydney at the Opera House.

The third festival sideshow will include Irma Thomas. The soul queen of New Orleans will be traveling down under
for her first ever Australian tour. This “N’awlins Soul Sister No 1” is responsible for cutting some of the finest ever
soul music in the history of New Orelans music including “Time Is On My Side” later recorded by the Rolling Stones,
and “Ruler Of My Heart” which was changed to “Pain In My Heart” and recorded by Otis Redding. This sideshow is
scheduled for April 21 at The Factory in Sydney.

Sembcorp’s Aussie unit wins bid to acquire WSN Environmental Solutions for $305m

Sembcorp Industries announces that its 40%-owned associate, SembSita Australia, trading as SITA Environmental Solutions, has been named the successful bidder to acquire 100% of WSN Environmental Solutions (WSN), a solid waste management service provider owned by the New South Wales government in Australia.

AVJennings says it added over 2,700 residential lots since Jun 30

Residential developer AVJennings today announced details in relation to the addition of over 2,700 lots to its residential pipeline which stood at 9,500 lots as at Jun 30.

The company says it acquired of 470 lots at Cobbitty, New south Wales, a site located in one of Sydney’s most significant growth corridors in South West Sydney. The 43 hectare parcel is zoned residential. Another acquisition is located at Coomera, Queensland.

AVJennings also entered into agreements in relation to the Elysium project in Noosa Heads in Queensland which comprises some 158 lots and 16 nearly completed dwellings, and the Land Management Corporation, a South Australian Government body, in relation to a project of over 1,750 lots at Penfield in Adelaide’s northern growth corridor.

ComfortDelgro’s (C52.SG) expansion in Australia, via A$38.8 million ($46.8 million) acquisition of Swan Taxis, generating little interest among investors, according to Dow Jones.

ComfortDelGro makes A$39m takeover bid for Perth’s largest taxi operator

ComfortDelGro Corporation has made a A$38.8 million ($46.8 million) takeover bid for Swan Taxis Limited, the largest provider of taxi services in the Perth metropolitan market with 1,667 taxis or a 91% share of the market.

If successful, ComfortDelGro says the move will further extend its presence in Australia where it is already one of the largest private bus operators in New South Wales and Victoria.

Frasers Centrepoint acquires 13.7 hectares of site in Sydney for $98m

Frasers Centrepoint, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fraser and Neave, announced today that its Australasian property arm — Frasers Property Australia — has acquired a 13.7 hectare site (about 1.5 million sq ft) in Sydney from the Royal Rehabilitation Centre Sydney (Royal Rehab) for A$82.5 million ($97.8 million).

Royal Rehab is an internationally recognised, premier rehabilitation and disability facility within New South Wales.

Forensic science: The “CSI effect”

Television dramas that rely on forensic science to solve crimes are affecting the administration of justice

OPENING a new training centre in forensic science (pictured above) at the University of Glamorgan in South Wales recently, Bernard Knight, formerly one of Britain’s chief pathologists, said that because of television crime dramas, jurors today expect more categorical proof than forensic science is capable of delivering. And when it comes to the gulf between reality and fiction, Dr Knight knows what he is talking about: besides 43 years’ experience of attending crime scenes, he has also written dozens of crime novels.

The upshot of this is that a new phrase has entered the criminological lexicon: the “CSI effect” after shows such as “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”. In 2008 Monica Robbers, an American criminologist, defined it as “the phenomenon in which jurors hold unrealistic expectations of forensic evidence and investigation techniques, and have an increased interest in the discipline of forensic science.” …
