ABNA-SE General Assembly closes

The two-day session of the General Assembly of the Association of the Balkan News Agencies – Southeast Europe (ABNA-SE) hosted by Tanjug in ended in Belgrade. The Saturday meeting between the directors and editors-in-chief of the Balkan news agencies and Serbian Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković marked the end of the gathering.

PM talks economy, Kosovo, NATO

PM Mirko Cvetković stated on Saturday that Serbia, as well as the EU, is based on two pillars: peace and economic development. Cvetković met with directors and editors-in-chief at the 19th General Assembly of the Association of the Balkan News Agencies – Southeast Europe (ABNA-SE) in Belgrade and said that the EU integration process and economic development are priorities which are common for all South-eastern countries, adding that as a result, their cooperation should be realized to the greatest possible extent.

Tadić: EU membership is strategic goal

President Boris Tadić says he has done everything in his power to make Serbia become the driving force of positive changes in the region.
Speaking on Tuesday at a conference on Southeast Europe in Stuttgart, Germany, he reiterated that the country’s EU membership is a strategic goal of his policy.

Conference on Serbia’s European outlook

A conference dubbed “Serbia on the road to Europe – 10 years after” will be held in Belgrade on Tuesday, the EU Integration Office announced. The event will be dedicated to Serbia’s European outlook and regional cooperation in Southeast Europe.

Analysts assess Westerwelle visit

While German FM Guido Westerwelle is holding meetings in Priština, Belgrade is still assessing effects of his yesterday’s visit. Westerwelle’s statement that Kosovo’s independence is a reality and that geographical map of Southeast Europe has been permanently changed has raised dust.

Memorandum on regional police cooperation

Interior ministers of the countries of the region, including Serbia’s Ivica Dačić, signed a memorandum on police cooperation in Sofia on Friday. The signing marked the end of the third meeting of the committee of ministers of the countries that have signed the Police Cooperation Convention for Southeast Europe.

Police director praises cooperation with Croatia

Serbian Police Director Milorad Veljović says cooperation between Serbian and Croatian police forces in combating organized crime was exemplary. Speaking during a news conference at the 17th Annual Southeast Europe Police Chiefs Association (SEPCA, held in Opatija, Croatia, Veljović said that he expected that other countries would also establish mutual cooperation modeled on that implemented by Croatia and Serbia.

Dačić: Cooperation necessary to fight drug trafficking

Interior Minister Ivica Dačić said in Tirana on Thursday that cooperation between region police is needed to prevent drug trafficking. “All reports, including the report of U.S. security services, say that the Balkans are a major transit area, and that almost 80 percent of all heroin which comes to Europe from Afghanistan crosses this territory,” Dačić said at the Annual Ministerial Conference on Cooperation in the Field of Border Security in Southeast Europe.

“Serbia is China’s strategic partner”

Chinese ambassador to Serbia Wei Jinghua said that Serbia became China’s main strategic partner in Southeast Europe last year. Last year, the countries increased exchanges and cooperation in trade, Wei told daily Blic.

Belgrade real estate prices lowest in region

Recent studies show that Belgrade has the lowest prices for renting apartments and offices in the region.

Other than Budapest, in which the amount of available apartments has been greater than the demand in the last two years, Belgrade is the cheapest larger city in Southeast Europe, with apartments costing less than in Sofia or Tirana even.

NIS fourth biggest in region

The Serbian Oil Industry (NIS) is the top Serbian company in terms of income in the latest league table of companies in Southeast Europe. NIS, whose majority owner is Russian Gazprom, had revenue of EUR 3.43bn in 2008, compared to EUR 3.19bn in 2007.

Declaration against terrorism in SE Europe

Interior Minister Ivica Dačić announced on Friday a declaration on joint fight against terrorism and organized crime in Southeast Europe. According to him, the declaration “will be signed in the coming months”.

“RS not impeding on development in Bosnia”

Chief of the EP’s Southeast Europe delegation, Doris Pack, said that the existence of the Republic of Srpska (RS) is not slowing down Bosnia’s progress. “The existence of RS is not an obstacle, political verbal attacks are, and that is present in both entities. RS is not a state, nor will be become one,” Pack said in an interview with Banja Luka daily Glas Srpske.
