Parliament to meet by end of month

Parliamentary Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović said that the next parliamentary meeting will most likely be scheduled before the end of January. “I will talk next week with MP group chiefs, to agree on a new meeting, because I haven’t received any cases for calling a meeting,” Đukić-Dejanović said.

New judges, prosecutors sworn in

Newly-elected judges and deputy prosecutors have been sworn in at Wednesday’s parliamentary session by Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović. Once the new judges and prosecutors took their oaths, newly elected magistrates were also sworn in.

MPs to debate audit report no sooner than March

Parliamentary Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović told B92 that parliament would debate the report of the State Audit Institution (DRI) in March of next year. She said that the opposition’s initiative for the debate could reach the parliamentary agenda on March 1, because the proposal was not submitted under emergency procedures.

Budget adoption could miss deadline

It is increasingly likely that next year’s budget will not be passed in parliament by the legal deadline of December 15. Parliamentary Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović said on Saturday that the 2010 budget will be adopted by December 20.

Budget draft forwarded to parliament

The 2010 budget draft has arrived to the state parliament. MPs are scheduled to debate the draft starting next week. “The budget has arrived and it is being copied so that it can be distributed to the MPs. The next session will be held at the end of next week, in order for the MPs to have time to analyze in detail the very important law, which enables the realization of the implementation of other laws,” Parliamentary Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović said.

Final 2008 budget report withdrawn

The Serbian government has withdrawn the final state budget report from the parliamentary procedure. This was confirmed in parliament today by Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović.

Parliamentary debate on statute on Tuesday

Parliamentary Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović has called a meeting on Tuesday for the debate of the Vojvodina statue draft and accompanying laws. Đukić-Dejanović proposed that the statute and the law on transferring authorities to Vojvodina, approved by the government, begin being debated at Tuesday’s meeting.

MPs to debate draft statute on Nov. 24

Parliament Speaker Slavica Đukic-Dejanović said on Monday that a session on drafts on Vojvodina authorities and statute will start on November 24. After meeting with parliamentary group leaders, Đukic-Dejanović said that most of them agreed to have the current session adjourned twice due to important issues on the agenda such as the draft Vojvodina statute and the draft budget, on which the MP’s will vote during special sessions.

“Vojvodina statute won’t spell end of govt.”

Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović says that members of the government have no reason “to part ways” when it comes to the draft Vojvodina statute. “I have information that ministries in charge have finished their work and that proposal of the law on transfer of competencies from the republic to the provincial authorities in Vojvodina will be on the agenda of the government’s next meeting, so parliament could discuss it during November,” Slavica Đukić-Dejanović told Belgrade daily Blic on Monday.

“Law on Parliament on fall agenda”

Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović says the law on parliament will most probably be on the agenda of the first day of the regular fall session. The goal of this legislation is to improve parliament’s functioning, she said, adding that it would “regulate the manner of parliament’s funding and place it in the hands of MPs.”

“Elections not in anyone’s interests”

Parliamentary Speaker Slavica Đukić Dejanović said in Jagodina yesterday that early legislative elections were not in the public interest. “In politics, anything is possible, but I really don’t think elections are in Serbian citizens’ interests,” said Dejanović, adding that new elections would bring “nothing new, nothing spectacular, maybe a minor change, at the most.”

The Serbian parliament will vote on August 31 on 24 bills on which the debate ended on Wednesday. Parliament Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović said yesterday that on August 31, MPs will vote for the bills which were on the agenda of the special session which began on July 16.

MPs to vote on controversial law Aug. 31

Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović has announced that MPs will vote on changes to the Law on Information and 23 other items on the agenda on August 31. She denied that the vote has been postponed because the ruling coalition could not agree on the law.

Speaker: Statute on agenda in fall

Parliament Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović said that the timing for introducing the Vojvodina statute to the agenda depends exclusively on the government. She told Novi Sad daily Dnevnik said that she was prepared to have the parliament work during the summer because of the draft statute, but an accompanying law on jurisdiction did not arrive from the cabinet of Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković.

Could controversial law topple government?

There are several days left before the voting on the proposed change to the Law on Information, with some saying that the government could collapse if it fails. Parliament Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović, of the ruling Socialists (SPS), said that the fate of the law remains “very much uncertain”. Previously, SPS MPs were heard saying they will not support the amendments because “they do not wish to return to the past and be linked to a law that is seen in some parts of society as restrictive”.

Uncertainty over fate of media law

Parliament Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović said that it is very uncertain whether draft changes to the law on media will pass in parliament. “As the parliament speaker, I believe that it is good that such a law has found its way into the procedures, but the question is how MPs will rate the law’s text,” Đukić-Dejanović told daily Blic.

DSS criticizes work of parliament

The opposition Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) has criticized Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović and her deputies. The party officials say parliamentary rules of procedure were violated during several recent sessions.
