INSIDE MOBILE: Watch the Time You Spend Looking at TV, Computer, Smartphone, Tablet Screens

Apple’s iPad introduction should get us all thinking about the amount of time we spend looking at electronic screens such as TV, computer, smartphone or tablet screens. There’s something important to consider here: Be concerned about the time you spend looking at electronic screens. As Knowledge Center mobile and wireless analyst J. Gerry Purdy advises here, make sure that the time you spend looking at electronic screens is balanced with the time you spend interacting with other people and with the world in which we live.
– With the Apple iPad, we will have four major electronic screens with which most of us today interact: TV, computer, phone and tablet. There are additional electronic screens outside the home such as movie theater screens, sports stadium screens and electronic billboards. Gaming consoles also typical…

The Supreme Court rules that businesses and unions may fund political messages in elections

BY THE narrowest of majorities, America’s Supreme Court ruled on Thursday January 21st that Congress may not bar corporations and unions from paying to disseminate political messages at election time. The ruling is arguably a blow for free speech, although critics of the decision quickly concluded that it would lead to big business buying elections.

The case concerned “Hillary: The Movie”, a 90-minute documentary which portrays Hillary Clinton as a power-crazed gorgon. It is a dreary and unbalanced piece of hack work, but clearly protected by the Constitution. “Congress shall make no law…abridging the freedom of speech,” says the First Amendment. Not “thoughtful, judicious speech”. Just “speech”. Yet the makers of “Hillary: The Movie” were forced to drop plans to distribute their work via cable for fear of being fined or jailed. …

Big firms are readying to splash out on takeovers and expansion

WHAT a difference a year makes. At the start of 2009 many companies were obsessed with scraping together enough cash to survive, and even the blue-chips were cutting costs where they could, having had a nasty shock when the capital markets seized up the previous autumn. Depressed prices in the junk-bond market seemed to foretell an unprecedented Armageddon of bankruptcy as record numbers of firms defaulted on their debt. Gloom was the order of the day.

Twelve months later the mood in many boardrooms has been transformed. Fear and trepidation have given way to cautious optimism. Admittedly, this is mostly a reflection of the improvements firms have made to their own operations, and of the remarkable revival of the capital markets, rather than any firm signs of a return to strong growth in the rich world. But, while the chill wind of recession may continue to whistle through the streets, there will be a cosy warmth up in the executive suites as bosses contemplate the opportunities that the improving outlook, and their strengthening finances, will bring. …

Efficient Frontier: Microsoft Bing Gains in Spend, Click Share at Google’s Expense

Microsoft Bing posted quarter-over-quarter gains in paid clicks and spend share, according to Efficient Frontier. Those gains appear to be coming at the expense of Google, whose share of search spending fell to 73.7 percent, from 75.5 percent in the second quarter. Bing’s paid search momentum is muted by a few factors. Google commands some 70 percent of the search advertising spend and its search market share appears insurmountable.

Though recent reports of search market share imply Microsoft Bing may have peaked, the search
engine posted quarter-over-quarter gains in paid clicks and spend share,
according to Efficient Frontier, which published its search engine performance
report for the third quarter Oct. 13….
