“Govt. reshuffle aimed at weakening SPS”

Media reports about the government reshuffle are aimed at reducing the power of the Serbian Socialist Party, SPS leader Ivica Dačić told daily Večernje novosti.

He claims that there has not been a single concrete proposal for downsizing of the government.

SPS leader: DS wants two-party system

Ivica Dačić said the ruling Democrats (DS) and the opposition SNS have a common goal of creating a two-party system in Serbia. The leader of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) and Serbia’s first deputy PM said his ruling coalition partners the Democratic Party, led by the country’s president Boris Tadić, will not have the Socialists’ help in achieving this.

SPS holds party congress

Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) leader Ivica Dačić has stated that the party had managed to preserve its ideology, overcome difficulties and strengthen itself.

Opening the eighth SPS Congress in Belgrade on Saturday, he said that the Congress was aimed at a comprehensive party reform in order to strengthen the SPS.

Socialists to hold on to ministries

The deputy president of SPS, Slavica Đukić-Dejanović, says that she expects a government reshuffle to take place.
But the ruling Socialist Party official, who is also the Serbian parliament speaker, told Belgrade daily Blic on Monday that SPS “has no reason to give up any of the ministries” it holds in the current cabinet.

Ruling SPS calls on Serbs to vote

Ruling SPS party has joined the Democrats in calling on Serbs in Kosovo to take part in elections organized by Kosovo Albanian authorities. Previously, the Liberal-Democrats (LDP) also voiced this stand. Opposition DSS is against such a move.

SPS leader open to SNS-DS coalition

SPS leader Ivica Dačić did not rule out a possibility of joining a coalition with the Democrats (DS) and Serb Progressives (SNS) after next elections.
“It has not been discussed so far, but if there are no other possibilities it will remain an open option,” Dačić said in a statement published by the Belgrade daily Blic on Thursday.

SPS, DS team up in Kosovo municipality

The local authorities in the municipality of Novo Brdo in Kosovo will be formed by the Socialist-led SPS-PUPS-JS coalition and the Democratic Party (DS). The authorities in the northern part of Kosovska Mitrovica “will probably be organized in the same manner as on the state level”, SPS-PUPS-JS officials stated on Wednesday.

Suitcase Affair defendants acquitted

The Higher Court in Belgrade has ruled that a former NBS vice-governor and an SPS party official were not guilty in a bribery case. The prosecution indicted and sent to trial central bank’s former number two, Dejan Simić, and Vladan ZagraÄ‘anin of the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), for allegedly accepting bribes in a case the media dubbed the Suitcase Affair, since the money was found in a suitcase.

SPS: No elections before May 2012

Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) spokesman Đorđe Milićević said there will be no new parliamentary elections before May 2012. He said that the collecting of signatures for early parliamentary elections represents an act of political marketing and a fight within the opposition.

Dačić says fellow SPS minister to respect decision

Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) leader Ivica Dačić said that the Democratic Party (DS) is currently the closest party to SPS ideologically. “It is important for Serbia to maintain stability in the coming period. Since the DS is a member of the Socialist International, they are closest to the SPS ideologically currently, regardless of how strange that might sound to our supporters and their supporters,” Dačić said in an interview with the weekly edition of Blic.

Dačić on draft law and coalition

Socialists (SPS) leader Ivica Dačić says the ruling coalition is not in crisis and this is not the first time there are disagreements regarding a draft law. The first deputy PM and interior minister in the Cvetković cabinet told daily Blic that his party was not consulted regarding the Information on Public Law, “which could mean that there was already an agreement over a majority in parliament”.

SPS official dies in car crash

Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) official Borka Vučić died when the car she was riding in hit a protective wall on the side of the highway and caught on fire. According to a television station in Kragujevac, the accident occurred when the car, in which four people were traveling, got a flat tire and the driver lost control, swerved over to the other side of the road, hit the wall, and caught fire.

Could controversial law topple government?

There are several days left before the voting on the proposed change to the Law on Information, with some saying that the government could collapse if it fails. Parliament Speaker Slavica Đukić-Dejanović, of the ruling Socialists (SPS), said that the fate of the law remains “very much uncertain”. Previously, SPS MPs were heard saying they will not support the amendments because “they do not wish to return to the past and be linked to a law that is seen in some parts of society as restrictive”.

Zemun elects new municipal leader

Members of the Zemun assembly have elected a new municipal president, vice-president and members of the municipal council. The ruling coalition—made up of the Serb Progressive Party (SNS), the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) and the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS)—elected Branislav Prostran (SNS), a graduate in management and private businessman, to the office of municipal president. He was formerly Zemun municipal manager.

“Democrats preparing to ditch G17″

The Democrats (DS), the Sandžak Democratic Party (SDP) and the Socialists (SPS) reached an agreement in general to team up in the future government as well. But, Belgrade daily Blic writes today, this deal does not include MlaÄ‘an Dinkić’s G17 Plus.

Adoption of information law in balance

A big question mark hangs over the adoption of the Law on Public Information after the SPS announced that it would be abstaining from the parliamentary vote. MPs are due to vote on annexes and amendments to the Law on Public Information under urgent procedure. Even though voting has been scheduled for Thursday, it is still not certain whether the bill will be passed after the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) announced that it would be abstaining, as it had earlier at the cabinet vote on the issue.
