Despite its giant population, Facebook is not quite a sovereign state—but it is beginning to look and act like one

A COUPLE of months or so after becoming Britain’s prime minister, David Cameron wanted a few tips from somebody who could tell him how it felt to be responsible for, and accountable to, many millions of people: people who expected things from him, even though in most cases he would never shake their hands.

He turned not to a fellow head of government but to…Mark Zuckerberg, the founder and boss of Facebook, the phenomenally successful social network. (It announced on July 21st that it had 500m users, up from 150m at the start of 2009.) In a well-publicised online video chat this month, the two men swapped ideas about ways for networks to help governments. Was this just a political leader seeking a spot of help from the private sector—or was it more like diplomacy, a comparison of notes between the masters of two great nations? …

PM addresses Statehood Day event

Serbia’s European path is no longer challenged by anyone, Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković told a gathering in Belgrade ahead of Statehood Day. He addressed top officials, as well as diplomatic envoys and other guests gathered at the National Theater in Belgrade on Sunday evening, and said that Serbia is getting “ever closer to EU membership, reestablishing connections with the world that were disrupted for years”.

Serbia marks Statehood, Army Day

Serbia is today celebrating Statehood and Army Day, which coincides with the religious holiday of Sretenje (Presentation of Jesus). State and military honors were performed in Orašac, central Serbia, with Minister of Religion Bogoljub Šijaković present.

“Quasi statehood won’t spread to north”

Ministry for Kosovo State Secretary Oliver Ivanović yesterday spoke about plans to “integrate” northern Kosovo with Priština’s institutions. The plan, announced by the ethnic Albanian authorities and head of the International Civilian Office (ICO) Pieter Feith “has no chances of success because it does not have the approval of the Serbs and the Serbian government”, Ivanović told Tanjug news agency on Sunday.

Palestinians to ask UN to endorse statehood

With the Middle East peace process deadlocked, the Palestinians are threatening to change tactics and bypass the negotiating table. The Palestinians say they plan to ask the U.N. Security Council to endorse a Palestinian state without Israel’s consent. Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat.
