STEADY JOINS THE NATION!

Last evening Stephen Colbert reminded The Hold Steady that “Heaven is whenever Jesus can fit them in.” The band cranked out a nifty version of “Hurricane J” off their fab new album, Heaven Is Whenever, a bang-up “I’m not the right guy for you” song with the good grace to say, “I don’t want you to settle/ I want you to grow.” What a great sentiment!

The Hold Steady New Album Heaven Is Whenever 5/4

The Hold Steady’s Heaven Is Whenever Set For Release May 4

The Hold Steady

The Hold Steady, lauded for the scope, depth, truth and heart they bring to chronicling the American rock myth, recently put the finishing touches on Heaven Is Whenever, their new album set for release May 4 on Vagrant Records. The album was produced by Dean Baltulonis, who engineered the band’s Almost Killed Me and produced Separation Sunday, and was recorded at Dreamland Recording Studios in Upstate NY and Wild Arctic Studios in Queens, NY, with mixing also happening at Wild Arctic.

Singer Craig Finn says Heaven Is Whenever is about “embracing suffering and understanding its place in a joyful life. The lyrics speak a lot about struggle and reward.” Piano and keys take a backseat to guitar on the new record, which also gets production help from guitarist Tad Kubler. “I really believe the album exposes new elements of the band that we hinted at on other records but weren’t able to fully realize until this one,” says Kubler. “Rather than just concentrate on changes in the instrumentation, we made changes to the song writing process.”

Recorded in several smaller sessions spread out over a long period of time, the songs on Heaven Is Whenever received the benefit of being tested on the band’s recent tours. There was also a makeshift recording booth set up on the back of their tour bus so songs and musical ideas could be documented as they developed. As Finn says this allowed them to “see what was working and what wasn’t. I believe this record benefits from us working at a more deliberate pace.”

Following the release of 2008′s critically acclaimed Stay Positive, which gave the band its highest Billboard chart position to date, The Hold Steady toured relentlessly, playing to some of their biggest audiences to date.

America’s Cup opener put off due to lack of steady wind

A lack of wind yesterday led organisers to postpone the first race of the 33rd America’s Cup, pitting defending Swiss champions Alinghi against US side Oracle in a best-of-three series. The race – a 40-nautical-mile windward-leeward course off the coast of the Spanish port of Valencia – will now

Ready, steady, spend

Big firms are readying to splash out on takeovers and expansion

WHAT a difference a year makes. At the start of 2009 many companies were obsessed with scraping together enough cash to survive, and even the blue-chips were cutting costs where they could, having had a nasty shock when the capital markets seized up the previous autumn. Depressed prices in the junk-bond market seemed to foretell an unprecedented Armageddon of bankruptcy as record numbers of firms defaulted on their debt. Gloom was the order of the day.

Twelve months later the mood in many boardrooms has been transformed. Fear and trepidation have given way to cautious optimism. Admittedly, this is mostly a reflection of the improvements firms have made to their own operations, and of the remarkable revival of the capital markets, rather than any firm signs of a return to strong growth in the rich world. But, while the chill wind of recession may continue to whistle through the streets, there will be a cosy warmth up in the executive suites as bosses contemplate the opportunities that the improving outlook, and their strengthening finances, will bring. …

Lifter Puller/Pre-Hold Steady BandDigitally Release Catalog

LIFTER PULLER CATALOG MAKES DIGITAL DEBUT

Lifter Puller

Lifter Puller was a rock band from Minneapolis, existing in various line ups from 1994 to 2000. The band was formed when Craig Finn moved back to his hometown of Minneapolis after graduating college. At first the band was heavily influenced by early 90s indie rock such as Pavement, Archers of Loaf, and Sebadoh. As years went on, however, they developed a style of their own and released three full-length albums, one EP, and a number of singles. They toured sporadically and largely unsuccessfully. After breaking up, the band received a great deal of interest and acclaim, leading to well received reunion shows in San Francisco, New York, and Minneapolis.

In the early 2000s band members Finn and Tad Kubler landed in New York City and formed The Hold Steady.

As recently reported on Pitchfork, the band is proud to announce that their catalog is now available digitally for the first time, along with a new collection of odds and ends titled Slips Backwards. They will also be releasing a book titled Lifter Puller Vs. The End Of, which will contain photos, lyrics, and an oral history of the band.

Slips Backwards is 17 tracks of singles, non-album tracks, and two live recordings from Washington D.C.’s Black Cat in 2000 – one of the band’s final shows. Their eponymous debut will be available digitally for the first time, while their sophomore LP, Half Dead And Dynamite, gets the Deluxe Reissue treatment, featuring live versions of tracks from a 1998 performance at Minneapolis’ iconic venue 7th St. Entry. The band’s only EP, The Entertainment And Arts (Deluxe Reissue), also includes live bonus tracks from the same 7th Street gig. Fiestas & Fiascos (Deluxe Reissue) was Lifter Puller’s Frenchkiss debut and last studio album, and the reissue features six live cuts from the band’s reunion shows at Seattle’s Triple Rock in June of 2003.

REVIEW: Google Chrome 3.0 Beta: Fast and Steady May Win the Race

Less than a year old and already at the 3.0 beta stage, Googe Chrome is quickly gaining on its rivals in the browser market. However, in this case haste isn’t making waste: The Google Chrome 3.0 beta showcases several new features that catch the browser up with competitors, and, if we see a few more additions by the time it releases, Chrome 3.0 looks like it will be a worthwhile upgrade.
– Mozilla Firefox has been out for more than five years and is just at Version 3.0. Apple Safari was originally released six years ago and is at Version 4.0. Google Chrome has been out for less than nine months, and Google just made Version 3.0 available. Google clearly is hell-bent on quickly making …
