Steel in Japan: Bonds of steel

A welcome mega-merger

THE proposed merger of Nippon Steel, Japan’s largest steelmaker, with Sumitomo Metals, a domestic rival, was announced on February 3rd. The new steel firm would be the world’s second- largest, after ArcelorMittal of Luxembourg. It is a welcome sign that Japan Inc is adapting.

Steel provided the backbone of Japan’s post-war industrial rise. Its quality—Japanese carmakers swear by it—still makes it a symbol of the country’s manufacturing prowess. A move to tie up Japan’s number one and number three steelmakers is a sign that the nation’s bosses are at last responding to the urgent need for corporate restructuring. It is the country’s first steel-industry merger since 2002, and comes as rising raw-material prices and steely competition from other East Asian producers have exposed alarming over-capacity. …

POSCO’s Indian steel project: Greens v jobs

How investor-friendly is India?

INDIA needs steel, ports and investment. POSCO, a South Korean steel giant, wants to invest 545 billion rupees ($12 billion) to build a steel plant with a port in Orissa, a poorish state with lots of iron ore. It would be the single biggest foreign investment in India ever, and yield 12m tonnes of steel a year. Yet for five years the plan got nowhere.

Farmers, fishermen, poor tribespeople and forest activists are fiercely opposed. They argue that the likely benefits, such as 17,000 jobs, would be outweighed by ecological damage and disruption to local lives. …

Union Steel Holdings swings back to black with full-year net profit of $4m

Mainboard-listed Union Steel Holdings, one of the largest metal recyclers in Singapore, says the group achieved a net profit of $4 million for the financial year ended 30 June 2010, reversing the previous year’s losses of $6 million.

Union Steel says group revenue declined 59% to $130.1 million from $317.5 million, on the back of lower exports of non-ferrous metals to China. Gross profit edged lower to $11.2 million from $12.2 million previously. This was because gross margins improved 4.8 percentage points as a result of a higher-margin product mix and higher selling prices.
