Jerry Jams for Rex Benefit Album w/ Phish, SCI, Widespread

MAJOR ACTS HONOR GARCIA FOR A GOOD CAUSE

August 9, 2010 marks the 15-year anniversary of legendary musician and Grateful Dead co-founder Jerry Garcia‘s death. As a way to honor his musical and community legacy, the gifted musicians on this compilation have generously contributed stirring live performances of Jerry Garcia songs to benefit The Rex Foundation. Available in a variety of formats, Jerry Jams for Rex was brought to life by Brad Serling of nugs.net and includes four exclusive previously unreleased live Garcia songs from Phish, Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers, The String Cheese Incident and Keller & The Keels. Other artists featured on the album include The Black Crowes, Yonder Mountain String Band and more. All proceeds are a contribution to the Rex Foundation.

Furthering what Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead started 26 years ago, the Rex Foundation endeavors to fund grassroots programs that are often under the radar of larger funding entities, yet work in bold, innovative ways to carry out essential work toward a healthy environment, promotion of the arts, protection of indigenous cultures, assisting others less fortunate, building strong communities, and educating children and adults. The Rex Foundation has distributed $8.6 million in grants to over 1,000 programs across the U.S. and internationally, while also carrying out fundraising initiatives that foster creativity and positive community connections. Visit www.rexfoundation.org for a complete list of grantees and information about current initiatives.

Wavy Gravy’s All Star Jam | 6.13.10 | SF

YOU’VE GOT GRAVY IN YOUR EYES!

Photos by Susan J. Weiand

On Sunday, June 13th, various All-Star musicians converged on stage at The Great American
Music Hall to benefit the Seva Foundation. The
cast of characters included Steve Kimock, Mark Karan, Billy
Kreutzmann
, Melvin Seals, Papa Mali, Lebo, Dave Brogan,
Bo Carper, Reed Mathis, Matt Hubbard, special guest Bobby
Vega
and Wavy Gravy himself.

The evening started off with a set by Lebo, Carper and Brogan performing “Spike Driver’s
Blues”, “Pallet on your Floor” and Old Crowe Medicine Show’s “Wagon Wheel” joined by Karan & Seals. The band played
on for a Dave Brogan tune “Infinite Eye” before Vega joined in for a soulful offering of Allen Toussaint’s classic “On
Your Way Down”.

Steve Kimock then took the stage with Vega, Seals & Brogan for an epic version of
the Zero fan favorites “Cole’s Law” > “Tangled Hangers”. The first set then closed with a
ripping rendition of Dylan’s “Highway 61 Revisited” featuring Karan, Lebo, Brogan, Kimock,
Seals & Vega.

Set two featured 7 Walkers: Papa Mali, Billy Kreutzman, Steve Kimock, Reed Mathis and Matt
Hubbard along with a variety of the aforementioned musicians joining in a setlist that
included “Jam” >
“Sugaree”, “He’s Gone”, “Just Like Tom Thumbs Blues”, “Bertha”, “Jump Back”, “Mr. Charlie”
and “Lovelight” amongst others.

Photographer Sue Weiand was on hand to document the experience for your visual enjoyment.

Seva Foundation was founded in 1978 by a group of people who helped eradicate
small pox,
and inspired by that achievement, joined together to alleviate other suffering caused by
poverty and disease. Seva’s public health programs in India, Nepal, Tibet, Cambodia
Bangladesh and Tanzania work to eliminate curable blindness. Over two million people have
received sight-restoring surgeries. In Mexico and Guatemala Seva assists indigenous
communities with training and resources to attain literacy and economic self-sufficiency.
In the United States, where diabetes claims Native American lives at four times the
national average, Seva offers diabetes prevention and small grants programs, created and
directed by Native Americans.

Wavy Gravy, activist clown, former Ben & Jerry’s flavor, hippie-icon, flower-
geezer, is a
founding board member of the Seva Foundation. He is the creative director of Camp

Furthurmore Festival | 05.31 | California

By: Sam Martin

Furthurmore Festival :: 05.31.10 :: River Ranch Campground :: Tuolumne,
CA

The Furthurmore Festival, held in the Stanislaus National Forest, down a long,
single lane winding road, deep in a valley covered with the green foliage of pine and
deciduous trees, there’s a campground where two rivers cross; a deep in there, very well
hidden backwoods campground nestled amongst the trees. Those two rivers, or streams as
they were this day, formed an island, and on it was the stage with a wood arched bridge
that allowed patrons to cross safely from the campground to island and back.

Opening the festivities, The Jug Dealers and The Grasshoppers put on mostly
past-by sets. People weren’t settled in yet, and were unaware that the music had started,
so the bulk of the campers had yet to come across the bridge. L’Fiasco also
played, but about an hour behind schedule and to a small crowd.

Zane Kesey and the pranksters brought the historic, beautiful Further Bus in for
the show and some pranks. Kesey is a man who really pays tribute to the past and adds to
the scene in a light and magical way. There were also a small number of vendors and good
beer on tap, or you could bring your own.

Bill<br />
Kreutzmann, 7 Walkers and Papa Mali concert photo
7 Walkers

About twenty minutes before darkness, Bill Kreutzmann‘s
super-group 7
Walkers
– made up of Kreutzmann (drums), George Porter Jr. (bass,
vocals), Papa
Mali
(guitar, vocals) and Matt Hubbard (keys) – came up on the small stage. The vibe was
exciting, but it didn’t feel like a festival; it felt like a family gathering, and in many
ways it was. Some people had the look of utter exhaustion on their face coming directly
from the Furthur Festival at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds (see JamBase review here), yet still they couldn’t help smiling when 7 Walkers opened with
“Deal” with Papa on lead vocals. They played to cheers and applause all the while
showcasing new songs from their upcoming debut album, co-written by Grateful Dead lyricist
Robert Hunter and
Papa Mali. George Porter Jr. took the microphone for the Grateful Dead’s blues tune
“Sugaree.” Mixing up the songs, with amazing solos by Mali, the tight drumming that
Kreutzmann is known for, Porter’s incredibly funky bass lines, and soulful keys from
Hubbard, it was am amazing show.

Kimock & Lebo

By the time they were finished the evening chill had settled into the small valley, and
the projector light show by liquid lights was accompanied by a green laser being shot at
the trees from behind the stage. To add to carnival-like atmosphere, fire dancers came
out and belly danced while Matt Butler and Everyone Orchestra
set up their numerous instruments. This night’s lineup included Dan Lebowitz
(guitar), Steve
Kimock
(lead guitar and slide), Melvin Seals
(organ), George Porter Jr. (bass), Dave Brogan (drums), Nat Keefe
(mandolin, guitar), Aaron Redner (fiddle), and three amazing vocalist, one of which
was a flautist. The set that followed could only be described as mind-blowing,
complementing the venue’s outdoor feel, and the jams were intricate and lengthy. The
members of the Orchestra read each other with a keen sense of precision. Lebo really
shined on this evening, and Kimock gave his usual speechless performance, but in this
instance it was a lot of great music being made up there, without any ego – the best way.
Butler’s amazing ability to conduct and feel out what each musician is capable of allows
him to act as a musical conduit between the crowd and the stage. He doesn’t lead but
rather points the Orchestra in a certain direction and let’s them decide how to get there.

Holy Kimoto

With the show now piercing into morning, the crowd wearing sweatshirts, the last main act
came out. Holy
Kimoto
, the live-tronica trio from The String Cheese
Incident
with Steve Kimock rounding out the sound with his improvisational guitar
skills. They performed a number of tracks as the crowd danced under the trees with green
lasers shooting overhead. The show was amazing, with the drumming of Michael Travis
and bass playing of Jason Hann complemented by Kyle
Hollingsworth
tearing it up on multiple keyboards and an organ. Hann also used a
synth and other electronic equipment.

There was a moment as the birds began to wake, sometime around 4 am, when Kimock, eyes
closed engaged in an intricate jam, broke out into a great smile that said it all. It
felt sacred. And in that moment it was.

The show came to a beautiful end sometime around 4:30 am, with people still dancing,
playing their guitars and drums at their tents. It was an all-nighter and one that was
worth every moment. As the corners of the horizon started to turn blue with laughter in
the air, one couldn’t help but hear “‘Til The Morning Comes” somewhere in the
distance.

Stanton Moore Trio | 05.06 | Los Angeles

Words by: Jamie Dewaele | Images by: Brigitte Bard

Stanton Moore Trio with Anders Osborne :: 05.06.10 :: The Mint :: Los Angeles, CA

Stanton Moore Trio :: 05.06 :: S.F.

Funk is a genre of music that emphasizes the ‘down’ or ‘off’ beat. It is usually played with the expressed purpose of inciting the audience to get up and dance. Music legends like James Brown, Little Richard, George Clinton, and the Funky Meters are credited with creating ‘funky’ music. Today there is a rich tradition of funk carried on by performers such as Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, the Greyboy Allstars, and Soulive. Galactic is one funk band that has been playing for nearly 15 years. One of Galactic’s founding members, drummer Stanton Moore, is currently touring with his trio in support of their new album, Groove Alchemy (released April 13 on Telarc). On this album, Stanton Moore (flanked by Robert Walter on keys and Will Bernard on guitar) explores the roots of funk drumming to provide a blueprint for those drummers out there that would like to grasp the art of funk drumming. In fact, Stanton released a DVD and wrote a book that accompanies the album.

Stanton was born in New Orleans and attended Loyola University, where he was awarded a BA in music and business. Stanton remained in New Orleans where he learned from and was influenced by musicians such as Dr. John, Professor Longhair, and The Meters. In 1996 he helped found Galactic, recently labeled in David Simon’s new show Treme as “a white version of The Meters.” Stanton’s list of collaborators reads like a who’s who of improvisational musicians: John Scofield, Chris Wood, Charlie Hunter, Skerik, Donald Harrison, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Marco Benevento, just to name a few. Two musicians that he has teamed up with more recently to form his trio are Robert Walter and Will Bernard. Walter is easily one of the most talented jazz-funk keyboardists around. Walter grew up in San Diego, where he attended the School of Creative and Performing Arts. It was in San Diego that he helped to found the legendary jazz-funk revival group, the Greyboy Allstars. After touring extensively and establishing himself with the Allstars, Walter founded the 20th Congress. Since then, he has played with such notable musicians as Melvin Sparks, Reuben Wilson, Mike Clark, and Steve Kimock.

Anders Osborne :: 05.06 :: S.F.

Berkley native Will Bernard is a fantastic guitarist who straddles many different genres. He has been involved with everything from jazz to funk to world music to hip-hop and beyond. Bernard has played in many different bands, including Motherbug, Frequinox, and the Will Bernard Trio. He is a Grammy-nominated guitarist whose style compares favorably to that of the legendary Grant Green. He has collaborated with such amazing musicians as Dr. Lonnie Smith, Charlie Hunter, Zigaboo Modeliste and John Medeski.

At The Mint, these three talented musicians began their tour as the Stanton Moore Trio with very special guest, singer-songwriter Anders Osborne on guitar and vocals.

The Mint was absolutely packed. In fact, there was a line of about 30 people outside hoping for a chance to get in and see the show. The Trio took the stage at 10:15 p.m. and Stanton announced that they would play a couple of tunes as the Trio, then bring out Osborne for the rest of the first set, and then the second set would be all Trio. Right from note one of the opener “Pie-Eyed Manc,” the crowd got to dancing and ate up every note of music that came off that stage. They played three songs as the Trio before Osborne came out. Anders Osborne is a guitar player with a very southern-fried style, and he absolutely shreds on the guitar. In fact, he turned the Trio into a southern rock band for the next six songs. For the most part, his songs were very high energy, prompting Stanton to leap off his stool to bang on his cymbals and bass drum. This Trio is so much fun to watch because of the enthusiasm coming from Stanton Moore and Walter’s ability to play bass notes and organ notes at the same time.

After a 30-minute breather, the second set began and there was a lot more room in The Mint. They opened the set with a tune off Groove Alchemy called “Squash Blossom,” which contained some really good interplay between the three musicians. This tune showcased the fact that they have been playing together as a trio for a long time.

The highlight of the second set and perhaps the entire evening, was a Stanton original called “Sprung Monkey” featuring Ephraim Owens on trumpet and Shelley Carrol on saxophone that clocked in at 12 minutes! Next was a James Booker tune called “Keep On Gwine” that featured Bernard using his slide skills. This tune was followed by a Galactic original called “Who Took the Happiness Away?” that included a devastating guitar solo by Bernard. They closed the set and the evening with a song called “Late Night at the Maple Leaf” that sent the crowd out into the streets of L.A. in high spirits.

This show was a lot of fun and the sold out crowd danced for the duration. Which was no surprise because the type of music these three guys play when they’re together makes it impossible to keep one’s feet still.

Marco Benevento: Video/Live Dates

SMALL TASTE OF NEW ALBUM, BUSY SPRING & SUMMER

Marco Benevento‘s new album, Between The Needles & Nightfall, hits stores next Tuesday, May 11, via his label Royal Potato Family/MRI. For a window into the recording process, check out footage from the album sessions at Trout Studios in Brooklyn, capturing the final of three days in the studio, where three additional songs were conceived in the last handful of hours.

“This is a record of tunes that essentially wrote themselves – whether at a soundcheck, or improvised in the studio, or behind the piano in the morning,” says Benevento. “Many of the most enjoyable listening moments are captured feelings of that immediate time, that nowness. The songs really seemed to write themselves amidst contemplation or frustration or inebriation or whatever that moment was rendering. Reed [Mathis], Andrew [Barr] and I improvised bridges on the spot, made songs from scratch and we pieced together song ideas that we’d messed around with on tour. We did all that in three days with the best real music capturist I know, Bryce Goggin.”

Steve Kimock: Tour Dates

STEVE KIMOCK CRAZY ENGINE TOUR BEGINS 4/20 IN FAIRFAX, CA WITH BOBBY VEGA

Steve Kimock

Beginning on 4/20, Steve
Kimock
joins long-time collaborator Bobby Vega for a very auspicious performance at their old stomping grounds in Fairfax,
CA. This one-night event will serve as a launching pad for the Steve Kimock Crazy Engine tour
kicking off the next day at the Hopmonk in Sebastopol, CA. Setting the tone for the tour, the Hopmonk
performance will also include Bobby Vega as a special guest, for what looks like a night of intense dueling bass licks
and the crystal clear guitar phrasing that only Steve Kimock can deliver.

Crazy Engine continues down the track on April 22 for an Earth Day celebration at Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz, CA. This three-set show boasts a rare Kimock solo opener – the first of its kind in California followed by Steve Kimock
Crazy Engine featuring the legendary Melvin Seals on Hammond B3 and keys (JGB), Kimock’s twenty-year-
old son John Morgan Kimock on drums and Trevor Exter, on bass and vocals. The Crazy Engine
run then heads south to Hermosa Beach and San Diego, with a stop in between in Phoenix, AZ for a late night
performance at the Compound Grill as part of the McDowell Mountain Music Festival – marking Kimock’s
first show in the Southwest for over three years.

Also scheduled for the spring, Kimock will perform a two-show solo performance in NYC at The Stone on May 7. Known for his intrinsic ability to speak through the guitar, this one-night stand is sure to bring out a side of Kimock’s
music (and instruments) rarely seen in the public, and often reserved for late nights in the heart of his home studio. The new non-profit performance space is dedicated to the experimental and the avante garde, a seemingly perfect
environment for the unconventional guitarist and his solo muse.

Then, beginning on May 20, Kimock will embark on a four-day journey with The Everyone Orchestra. The
traveling event will kick off at Hodi’s Half Note in Fort Collins on May 20 and will continue to Quixote’s True Blue
(formerly Owsleys) on Saturday May 21 and Sunday May 22. This rendition of the project features a stellar lineup of
nationally renowned talent including Kyle Hollingsworth (SCI), Jennifer Hartswick (Trey Anastasio Band), Dave Watts (The Motet), Jamie Janover (Zilla), Garrett
Sayers
(The Motet), Jamie Masefield (Jazz Mandolin Project), Matt Butler and of course, YOU. An additional Sunday, May 23
performance (minus Hollingsworth) is billed as a happy hour show featuring an acoustic set and with other special guests to be announced.

With little pause, Kimock will then join forces with the ultra-experimental Marco Benevento for an intimate powerhouse show at the River Street Jazz Cafe in Wilkes-Barre, PA – near Kimock’s home turf, on June 17. Both known for their emotive and often instrumental arrangements, this paring is sure not to disappoint.

Denver from May 20 – May 23. This rendition of the project features a stellar lineup of nationally renowned talent
including Steve Kimock
(SKB, Zero), Kyle Hollingsworth (SCI),
Jennifer Hartswick (Trey
Anastasio Band), Dave
Watts
(The Motet), Jamie
Janover
(Zilla), Garrett
Sayers
(The Motet), Jamie
Masefield
(Jazz Mandolin Project) and YOU.

How do you fit into the Everyone Orchestra? The fully improvised performance is the brainchild of founder
Matt Butler, who
incorporates the skill set of the assembled all-star lineup with the voices and sounds of
the audience for a unique and fun musical experience.

Literally an orchestra where everyone in the room takes part, the Everyone Orchestra brings together a
form of musical improvisation that is rarely accomplished to this degree. While the band actually only consists of
one key player – conductor Matt Butler – each show features a rotating cast of up to a dozen players on
any given night. Drawing on the wealth of talent local to the area he visits, or those performing at a festival, the
concept lures local and national players who are often performing for the first time together and the audience of
course, is performing right along.

The four-night traveling event will kick off at Hodi’s Half Note in Fort Collins on May 20 and will continue to
Quixote’s True Blue (formerly Owsleys) on Saturday May 21 and Sunday May 22. The Sunday, May 23 performance is
billed as a happy hour show featuring an acoustic set (minus Hollingsworth), and with other special guests yet to be
announced.

The locally based organization, Conscious Alliance, will also be hosting a food drive, benefiting the Pine Ridge
Reservation in South Dakota. All patrons that donate 10 non-perishable food items will receive a free limited-
edition Everyone Orchestra 2010 Colorado Tour poster created by the very special artist, Ryan Kerrigan.
Donations can be made with Conscious Alliance representatives at the front entrance of each venue.

Advance tickets for the Denver performance are on sale now at www.quixotes.com.

Chris Berry Trio with Kimock | 03.01 | Ukiah

Chris Berry Trio with Steve Kimock :: 03.01.10 :: Ukiah Brewing Company :: Ukiah, CA

Kimock & Berry – CB3 :: 03.01 :: Ukiah, CA

The Chris Berry Trio returned to the certified organic confines of the Ukiah Brewing Company once again, this time with guitar legend Steve Kimock in tow, and gave the Redwood Empire crowd a lesson in feel-good fun and psychedelic exploration.

The evening began with a solo set from Steven Bates on acoustic guitar, who at first struck me as a woodsy version of James Blunt mixed with the voice of Bob Dylan. As the crowd packed in, Bates utilized a strong catalog of covers to raise the temperature on a damp Monday night. Launching into a strong rendition of The Beatles’ “A Day in the Life,” Bates evoked some Phish-y thoughts and a sing-along from the eclectic and equally colorful crowd. Bates also showed off his mandolin skills with a heartfelt rendition of Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” that immediately had this Widespread Panic fan thinking of John Bell and the Marley raps he peppers throughout versions of “Stop-Go.”

Previously when CB3 visited Ukiah last summer, Berry brought with him longtime friend and Panjea member Michael Kang of String Cheese Incident fame, but the revolving door of CB3 guest musicians had turned and with it came Steve Kimock. Throughout the nation, and the West Coast in particular, Kimock has made guest appearances with a plethora of bands and brings with him a legion of loyal followers – for good reason, too. Kimock, Berry and Aaron Johnston and Jesse Murphy, both of Brazilian Girls (though Murphy is no longer an active member), took the stage to show Ukiah just what they had up their sleeves.

Kimock – CB3 :: 03.01 :: Ukiah, CA

Opening with “Come Away,” Berry wasted no time in getting out his unique mbira and filling the Brew Co. with its xylophone-meets-organ sound, and the crowd loved it. From Kimock’s upstroke guitar riffs to the bouncy, rolling tones of the mbira, the inimitable sound of CB3 was locked in and the kettle was starting to boil. I’ve come to expect that the soundscapes Berry and the band create can often be so rich that they’re almost visual, and this show was more of the same.

The previous CB3 show in Ukiah featuring Kang kept with a mostly island-like, calypso groove, but Kimock brought an entirely different flavor. With a row of effects pedals in front of him that looked like he could launch rockets, Kimock did just that. Following the opening verses of “Start Over Again,” Berry said, “Take it, Stevie,” and the ensuing solo dipped into an inspired jam that resonated through the room leaving mouths agape. Creating an almost Egyptian feel, Kimock took the jam into the depths of world beat downtempo before igniting the crowd with his fluid style of searing electronica and spacey interplay. Johnston and Murphy kept the first set flowing with a quick drum and bass solo as Kimock’s nimble fingers danced up and down the fretboard over the top. From there, the band uncorked a track that sounded like something from The Disco Biscuits‘ catalog thanks to the flavorful combination of guitar and pedal magic.

If CB3′s first set was all about structure and composed rhythm, then the second set was an experimental free-for-all with Kimock let loose on almost every track, stirring the crowd like a bowl of psychedelic soup. While Berry made up lyrics on the fly about the sky splitting Redwood trees of Mendocino County, the crowd stayed engaged as they fist pumped in unison. As the set drew to a close, Berry was in typical madman form onstage, multitasking between the bongos and mbira while keeping up with the vocals the whole time. With one track left, Kimock and Berry squeezed out the last of the crowd’s energy with a huge jam that touched on elements of jungle, calypso and some old fashioned rock & roll. As the jam reached its final crescendo with Kimock’s guitar placed in his lap, a good friend turned to me and gave a colorful conclusion about the show: “Steve Kimock is the Doctor Digital of the lap licks on guitar.” I think that about sums it up.

Justin Vernon & Steve Kimock | 01.21 | NY

Words by: Ryan Dembinsky | Images by: Greg Notch

Justin Vernon & Steve Kimock :: 01.21.10 :: Merkin Concert Hall :: New York, NY

Justin Vernon :: 01.21 :: NY Guitar Fest

A day trip out to the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria would provide the ideal prerequisite for the New York Guitar Festival’s Silent Films/Live Guitars series. The delightful multimedia museum hosts a particularly relevant hands-on exhibit, whereby visitors pony up to computer editing stations where they are given the opportunity to experiment with well known movie scenes by selecting between various musical selections to set the feeling for the scene.

The lesson comes across, clear as day, that while the scene remains the same, by applying soundtracks from vastly different musical genres, the tone and overall feel of the scene changes dramatically. Interestingly, what each amateur music supervisor quickly discovers is that there really exists no right or wrong in selecting the music for movies. To an extent, it can be said that a chase scene, for example, requires a composition with some degree of tension and up-tempo driving beat, but this can be as effectively conveyed via bluegrass or percussion and sparse keyboards as with gritty, hard-charging rock.

To that end, the New York Guitar Festival presents brilliant programming whereby they invite prominent guitarists to compose entirely original, custom scores to accompany timeless silent films. In essence, this makes for an interesting study in how different musicians – and different minds in general – interpret the feelings that a film evokes.

This particular week of the month-long series at Merkin Concert Hall played host to two virtual polar opposites in Steve Kimock (accompanied by his son John Morgan Kimock on drums) and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver (accompanied by Chris Rosenau, his longtime mentor and bandmate from Volcano Choir). As expected, both duets took wildly different approaches to their scores, but interestingly, both refrained almost entirely from playing the cartoonish, reactionary, sound effect-laden type of playing – a la Batman – that we might expect given the slapstick nature of the subject matter, with Kimock accompanying Buster Keaton‘s Cops and Vernon holding court for Charlie Chaplin‘s One A.M. and Easy Street.

Steve & John Morgan Kimock :: 01.21 :: NY Guitar Fest

To begin the performance, John Schaefer from WNYC’s Soundcheck introduced Steve and John Morgan Kimock, followed by a brief Q&A session with Steve, whereby he elaborated on his approach to the piece. As expected, Kimock professed that he and John Morgan planned to take a more improvisational approach to the subject matter, having pre-composed some general themes and segments but coming at it largely without a net.

The most convincing parts of the Kimock segment came via the bookend music that began and ended the film, where John Morgan played a simple melodica melody alongside a Wes Montgomery-esque jazz piece by Steve that resulted in a mood-setting French jazz theme. For the rest of the roughly 20 minute film, Steve stuck with a chord-based jazz guitar feel, altering his tempos and offering the occasional departure based on plot events, but for the most part John Morgan took care of the action, offering comical crashes, thuds, and thumps to reflect Buster Keaton’s mishaps.

By contrast, Justin Vernon and Chris Rosenau explained that they composed and wrote out their piece, collaborating for over a year on their particular scores. Musically, they took a wholly different route, opening up the first of their two films with Rosenau employing an EBow – a guitarist plaything that utilizes vibrations to emulate the bow of a stringed instrument – to create a snake-charming Middle Eastern theme to set the tone. From there, they kept their heads down and created sonic lasagna, layering heaps of effects, harmonics, looping violin plucks, and sweeping ambient chord progressions. Beautiful.

Rosenau & Vernon :: 01.21 :: NY Guitar Fest

The Vernon and Rosenau performance came across particularly astonishing given the nature of the narrative found in Charlie Chaplin films. One A.M., for example, highlights as Vernon joked, “Something we are both intimately familiar with,” namely struggling to make it to bed after an evening of inebriation. The plotline essentially consists of Chaplin falling down the stairs repeatedly and bumbling endlessly with a Murphy bed. Clearly, the natural temptation would be to cater to these mishaps by including playful trills and comical wah-wahs to acknowledge Chaplin’s repeated failures at achieving the most basic of tasks. Instead, the pair composed a beautiful song that could easily find a home on a Built to Spill or Pavement album. One chase scene did cater entirely to the action, delivering a wonderfully tense and action-packed segment that proclaimed, “You better run, man!”

Despite his reclusive nature since his rapid ascent to indie royalty, Justin Vernon came across as the nicest of guys, offering sincere thanks to everyone who came out to see this unique event. The pair clearly took a lot of enjoyment from working on such a fresh project, noting “how crazy we must have looked when anyone walked in to see us sitting right up in front of the TV with all of our guitar gear watching silent movies.”

Hopefully for Bon Iver fans, material of this ilk makes its way into the catalog – or perhaps that Bon Iver fans seek out some Volcano Choir – as folks who know Vernon more for his strum-oriented folk guitar playing will be amazed by his technical proficiency, specifically his skill with a pedal board.

The joy of the New York Guitar Festival came only in part from seeing two of today’s preeminent musicians in an intimate setting, but more so from taking the opportunity to think about the ways people convey different emotions with music, and ultimately thinking about how you yourself would approach it. This New York Guitar Festival program marks one of the truly fresh ideas in live music today, and frankly, it’s addictive. The post-show conversations with friends that come from seeing music in this context earn the price of admission alone. Visitors one week will no doubt want to return the following week, and the following week, and the week after that.

More information on the New York Guitar Festival, including the remaining schedule, can be found at newyorkguitarfestival.org.

CHRIS BERRY TRIO FEATURING STEVE KIMOCK ANNOUNCES WEST COAST SHOWS

Chris Berry

What happens when you put African grooves born in the ghettos of Zimbabwe with the ground breaking guitar work of San Francisco’s scene and combine it with New York City’s urban electronica? The West Coast is about to find out.

Joining together for their first multi-night tour, and performing under the guise of Chris Berry Trio (CB-3), Chris Berry has arranged his most interesting collaboration yet. Featuring Steve Kimock alongside the rhythm section of Aaron Johnston and Jesse Murphy (Brazilian Girls) comes an explosive cross-cultural musical experience for music lovers of all types. The 10-day tour will maneuver along the West Coast including dates in Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Eugene and Portland, OR.

Music first touched the Grammy award winning Chris Berry as a teen living in the heart of Zimbabwe where he carefully learned the indigenous rhythms of Africa on the sacred Mbira (African Thumb Piano). His ability to speak out against the tyranny of the Zimbabwean regime through the art of music won him overnight success across the country and in the World Music market, bringing his music around the globe.

Since then, Berry has performed on the stages of the 2000 Olympics, the Sydney Opera house and the nation’s largest festivals across the United States with his project Panjea. 2010 finds the “Afropop Superstar” (SF Chronicle) a multi-instrumentalist with grace on Mbira, the hand drum, as well as a gifted singer-songwriter whose voice is often compared to Sting.

Collectively, CB-3 has the ability to bring together three decades of music history tightly fitted into one anthology adorned with cutting-edge improvisational guitar, hip-hop and elements of modern electronica. Show goers can expect both a dance ready experience as well as an intimate view into music provoked by both the past and present.
