How to Effectively Manage Storage and Protect Data in the Cloud

Organizations of all sizes have to deal with an economic reality when it comes to cloud computing: cloud computing requires storage. These budgets continue to remain relatively flat even as demand for cloud storage capacity grows at a rate of nearly 60 percent per year. Here, Knowledge Center contributor Stephen Wojtowecz explains how organizations can effectively manage and protect the data stored in cloud environments. – The shift to cloud brings new challenges to data storage, which is already complicated by virtualized systems, tape storage, network-attached storage (NAS) and other data storage formats. Because all data in a cloud lives in the same shared system, management of the data becomes paramount in maintai…

EMC Launches 41 SMB Storage Products in Splashy Transatlantic Event

There was a lot of storage product information to present all at once, but EMC was bound and determined to do its first product launch of 2011 in a huge way on Jan. 18. In concurrent New York City and London events, the world’s largest independent storage company took the wraps off 41 new enterprise storage products for all markets. The new items, which become available in the current quarter, include a line of low-end storage servers aimed at SMBs called VNX and VNXe, which eventually will replace the company’s standard Clariion and Celerra products; an upgraded version of the Data Domain backup packages; a new Data Domain archiving array; its first branded Isilon "big data" array; and new software for its Symmetrix VMAX systems. The entry-level VNX and VNXe storage systems feature a starting price of about $10,000, so the traditionally large-enterprise company is making a concerted effort to move downstream in the market. Oh, yes, a splashy event like this wouldn’t be complete with photo opportunities, and there were a couple of nonsensical stunts involved. – …

Latest Compact Storage Devices Make Plenty of News at CES

While smartphones, computers and cameras took most of the headlines at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas Jan. 6-9, the latest data storage technology was also big news. All these new devices serve huge volumes of data that have to be stored somewhere. That "somewhere" comes in the form of hard drives; solid-state drives; thumb drives; and SAN, NAS and direct-attached rack-mounted storage servers. And while there are not quite as many new storage machines as there are phones and PCs, there are a significant number of new devices from such well-known vendors as NEC, SanDisk, Maxell, Iomega, Seagate, WD, Intel, Buffalo and many others. There also are newer companies coming onto the scene, such as Azio, Corsair, Lexar and OCZ, demanding attention with new-generation products. The latest drives have diverse designs, including highly capacious NAND flash and spinning disk hard drives with stronger even high-end government-grade encryption for consumer-level storage. They also deliver faster data movement due to dual-core processors with business-grade features trickling down into consumer devices. – …
