Barnes and Noble’s Nook E-Reader Now in Stock, Soon in Stores

Barnes Noble’s Nook e-reader experienced months of delays due to supposed demand, a situation that may be changing with the booksellers announcement that the Nook will be available in most stores starting midweek. The Nook is also listed as in stock online. Competition in the e-reader arena has heated up as the Nook, Amazon.com’s Kindle and soon the Apple iPad all compete for dominancy of the e-text market, with technological innovations and pricing seen as key factors in whether the manufacturers will seize a majority of market share.

Nokia is closing flagship stores in New York, Chicago and London, after a year in which profits and sales continued to slip. Analysts suggest that Apples iPhone is partly to blame and that Googles Android may be part of the solution.

New RIM BlackBerry, Sony Phones Offer Big Cameras, Bigger App Stores

The holidays are upon us, and new devices from Research In Motion, Sony, and other manufacturers offer users a host of new multimedia capabilities. RIMs BlackBerry line seems to be incorporating more consumer-style features such as dedicated music buttons with every passing generation, and Sony is embracing both Google Android and Windows Mobile 6.5 as the operating systems for its latest smartphones.

The California outlet will be opened in close proximity to an Apple Store, suggesting that Microsoft will indeed make good on earlier promises to compete with Apple directly for retail customers. According to a leaked document, Microsoft’s early concepts for the stores include an Answers Bar, an event area, and kiosks for products such as Windows 7 and Windows Mobile-equipped smartphones.

Microsoft’s plan to open several retail stores in the second half of 2009 now includes the hiring of George Blankenship, a former Apple executive who helped launch the companys retail arm in 2001.
