Milan dismiss Chelsea Pirlo offer

AC Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani says Chelsea’s offer for Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo is too low for them to consider.
Piro, 30, is being pursued by Chelsea, who have reportedly offered about £6.75m plus striker Claudio Pizarro.
"At this price Pirlo is not for sale," Galliani told Italy’s Sky television."
Meanwhile, a Salomon Kalou goal and an Alex Pearce own goal earned Chelsea a 2-2 draw at Reading after they had been 2-0 down with a minute left to play.
Carlo Ancelotti fielded a strong Blues side for their final pre-season match, but the new Chelsea coach is keen to bring in Pirlo, who he convinced to join AC from Milan rivals Inter in 2001, to his squad.

Pirlo is a dead-ball specialist who has helped Milan win one Serie A title and two Champions League crowns. The playmaker was also in Italy’s 2006 World Cup winning squad.
If Ancelotti gets his man, Pirlo will become the club’s fourth signing of the summer, following Yuri Zhirkov, Daniel Sturridge and Ross Turnbull to Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, Milan have joined Tottenham in expressing their interest in Real Madrid striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar.
The Dutchman had been set for a move to German side Stuttgart last week but that fell through due to his wage demands.
Spurs manager Harry Redknapp said last week that he was interested in the 25-year-old striker, although any move for Huntelaar would be dependant on Darren Bent’s transfer to Sunderland going through. </p

Striker must pay €17m fine
Drogba set to sign new Blues deal

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba is set to sign a new three-year deal, according to Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti.
The 31-year-old scored the first goal in a 2-0 friendly win against Inter Milan in the United States on Tuesday.
"Drogba is a very important player for us and we want him to play for Chelsea," said Ancelotti.
"He’s irreplaceable, as no other striker in the world can do the same job. I’ve spoken with Drogba and he’s told me he’s happy to stay."
The Ivorian forward, who has scored 94 goals in 216 games for Chelsea, notched the first goal against the Italian champions after only 11 minutes of their World Football Challenge match at the Pasadena Rose Bowl in Los Angeles.
He received a pass from Frank Lampard with his back to goal and turned and fired home from 20 yards. Lampard added the second from the penalty spot just after half-time as Chelsea dominated in front of 81,244 spectators.
The new deal would extend Drogba’s stay in west London to 2012 and after the game he reiterated the players’ belief that Chelsea captain John Terry, who is being targeted by Manchester City, would also stay at Stamford Bridge.
"He’s our captain and we need him and we know he’s going to stay with us and win more trophies," Drogba told ESPN.
However, one player who looks set to be leaving Chelsea is Ukrainian striker Andriy Shevchenko.

The 32-year-old has one-year left on his contract but Ancelotti stated: "I speak to Shevchenko every day and the situation is this: he’s with us until 31 August and then, together, we will make a decision.
"But I don’t know what will happen as the club has not received any offers."
Shevchenko cost Chelsea a club record £30.8m when he was signed in 2006 from AC Milan, where he returned last summer for a season-long loan deal.
Ancelotti believes he has already found a replacement for Shevchenko in the form of Daniel Sturridge, who scored in his first Chelsea game, against Seattle Sounders, on Saturday.
The 19-year-old joined the Blues earlier this month from Manchester City and a transfer tribunal will decide the fee.
"He has good quality and we expect him to have a good season," added Ancelotti.
"To score a goal in his first game is good for him and for us. He has a lot of quality as a striker who is quick and intelligent with his movement for others – I like that.
"He’s not a star. He’s a very good young player and we believe in young players at this club. He will be in the first team this season." </p

Ferguson: Tevez is not worth £25m
• ‘We made offer but never heard back from Kia Joorabchian’
• Manchester United manager admits striker was hero to fans
Sir Alex Ferguson tonight said the reason Carlos Tevez was no longer at Old Trafford was that the striker was not worth the £25m fee his adviser, Kia Joorabchian, had been demanding. The split between the Argentina striker and his former manager has been bitter, with Tevez accusing Ferguson and the club of refusing to speak to him about extending his two-year loan, which expired last month.
“We made contact with Carlos,” Ferguson retorted. “We sent him texts and spoke to him when he was in Argentina. Our chief executive, David Gill, made an offer to Kia Joorabchian and we spoke to Tevez before we played Inter Milan [in March] and told him we had spoken to Kia but we never heard back.
“In my opinion, I don’t think he was worth £25m. He was popular with the supporters. The fans quite rightly have their heroes and I was happy to go along with the deal as long as it was the right one but, quite simply, he is not worth £25m.”

• Ferguson: Owen may only play every 10 days
• Owen on target again in repeat friendly win
That Tevez has gone from the world champions to a side that finished ninth in the Premier League is, say sources at United, proof that money is the main motivating force for those players who have joined Manchester City. However despite an outlay of £200m under the manager, Mark Hughes, Ferguson doubts City will achieve their aim of breaking into the Champions League positions.
“Well, you just name their best team and then ask where it would go and you would have to say that they would struggle to get into the top four. It is understandable they should go for John Terry, given the money they have got. They have made their intentions known, so if I were in City’s shoes with all that money, I would have a go at doing that myself. He has the experience and he is captain of England.”
Man City to confirm Tevez signing
Manchester City have agreed a five-year deal to sign former West Ham and Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez.
The 25-year-old Argentine forward, who left Old Trafford last month, will complete his move subject to a medical.

Tevez agrees to join Manchester City
• Striker will have a medical before signing five-year deal
• Tevez will wear No32 shirt at City of Manchester Stadium
Manchester City have reached an agreement with Carlos Tevez over a proposed move to the City of Manchester Stadium.
The club have agreed personal terms with the 25-year-old, who spent the last two seasons at rivals Manchester United, and the deal has been ratified by the Premier League and the Football Association.
The Argentina striker will now have a medical in Manchester after which he is expected to sign a five-year deal before joining his team-mates for a pre-season tour of South Africa.
“It is terrific news,” City manager Mark Hughes told the official club website. “Carlos is an international player of the highest class who possesses all the attributes that will help drive this club forward.
“He is not only outstanding technically but he is a reliable goal scorer and someone who will contribute fully to the team ethic. He gives us another exciting, attacking dimension.
“I cannot wait to welcome him to City. This is yet another deal that shows the commitment of the owner Sheikh Mansour to make this club the very best it can possibly be. I am sure our fans will give Carlos an exceptionally warm welcome.”
Once Tevez completes his transfer he will wear the No32 shirt at Manchester City.
Owen handed United No 7 shirt
• Ferguson gives new striker Ronaldo’s shirt number
• Owen will line up alongside Rooney and Berbatov
Sir Alex Ferguson has handed Michael Owen the prized Manchester United No7 shirt. The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle United striker will take over Cristiano Ronaldo’s shirt and his place in an attacking line-up containing Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov.
The United youngsters Daniel Welbeck and Federico Macheda will both be given a chance to prove they are worthy of the accolades that have been bestowed on them. “They are both young players – but young players with ability always get a chance here,” said Ferguson.
The United manager confirmed he made a bid for Karim Benzema, only to be rebuffed by the Lyon forward, who instead became part of Real Madrid’s extraordinary spending spree.
With a world record £80m burning a hole in his pocket following the sale of Ronaldo, United had the funds to compete. But Ferguson refuses to be drawn into a bidding war for any player beyond the level he thinks is acceptable. He has already recruited Antonio Valencia and Gabriel Obertan in addition to Owen.
“There are some amazing numbers being talked about, not all of them realistic,” Ferguson said. “It is very difficult to get value now. In a way we benefited through the sale of Cristiano, although that figure was non-negotiable.
“But I feel we have a good squad, which meant there was no need for knee-jerk reactions. We asked about Benzema and we had a value for him. Lyon have done well because they got €42m [£36.3m] but I think we took a sensible view.”
