Mercedes-Benz World

I visited ‘Mercedes-Benz World’ at Brooklands, in Surrey, last week. Think mega-dealer, museum, theme park crossover. It’s a kind of ‘brand cathedral’ – well, a mini one compared with what they have in Stuttgart, but it’s still pretty impressive.

It’s right next to the Brooklands Museum, so if you are ever planning a visit for a browse, you could easily combine the two.

While I was there they let us have a go on the ‘AMG Experience’ and that was well worth putting an hour aside for. Most fun I have had this year and you just can’t get bored with the traction control off and 6.2 litre-V8 power going through the rear wheels on the wet skid circle.

The events listing caught my eye, too. I quite fancy the ‘Last Night of the Brooklands Proms’; might be fun on a summer evening after a few glasses of vino. If they have fireworks too, I’m going for definite and dusting off the Union Jack jacket. I’m not so sure about the ‘Disco Symphonic Spectacular’…

One thing though. I’d love to know how much M-B World has cost and what the view is inside Daimler HQ on the benefits it has brought to the Mercedes brand in the UK. It’s a long game, I guess. And it is also something that BMW doesn’t have in this market. Is BMW bothered?

KAKI KING SIGNS TO ROUNDER RECORDS, JUNIOR OUT APRIL 13

Kaki King

Singer & guitarist extraordinaire Kaki King has signed with Rounder Records. Named a “Guitar God” by Rolling Stone, King has spent the past decade gathering critical acclaim and fan admiration. Noah and the Whale Tour & Album Stream

Noah and the Whale Embark on October Headline Tour Supporting Their New Album
NPR Music Offers “Exclusive First Listen”

Noah and the Whale

Noah and the Whale embark on an October headlining tour supporting their new album and its accompanying film The First Days of Spring, out October 6 on Cherrytree/Interscope. They will kick things off at L.A.’s famed Roxy venue on October 20 playing select cities across the U.S. before ending the tour with a special event to be announced soon. In addition, there will be a number of intimate screenings of the film in select cities.

The U.S. release and tour come on the heels of the August 31 U.K. release where the album debuted in the Top 10 and was met with an overwhelming response: NME 9/10 – “…Spiritualized-tinged grandiose beauty,” The Sunday Times 4/5 – “…a masterpiece,” 4/5 Q Magazine – “breathtakingly beautiful,” 4/5 MOJO – “Breathtakingly ambitious.” In addition, the band performed this past August on the main stages of Reading and Leeds, where they shared the bill with Radiohead, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Bloc Party and Vampire Weekend.

In 2008, chief singer and songwriter Charlie Fink first began thinking of making an album that was also a film, and as he sees it, vice versa. The First Days of Spring was recorded in London and New York with producer Emery Dobyns (Patti Smith, Antony & The Johnsons) and the film was shot on location in London and Surrey with an ensemble cast that includes model Daisy Lowe. The film can be seen as a companion piece to the album, as a visual version of it, or as a piece of work in its own right but this decision is one which Noah and the Whale have decided to leave up to the listener and viewer.

NPR Music is currently streaming the entire new album, one week ahead of its official release. The First Days of Spring is available for free, on-demand listening now through October 6 at npr.org/music, as part of the site’s “Exclusive First Listen” series.

The final furlong

The voting system could have a decisive effect on the election in Germany

AMONG the candidates contesting the Stuttgart North constituency in Germany’s federal election on September 27th, Karin Maag, of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), is unique: she could win, but she might also lose. In contrast, the fate of the other candidates looks certain. Even if defeated, three of her four main competitors are likely to re-enter the Bundestag because they have high spots on their party lists. The fourth, Marion Hess of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) has little hope: she is low on her party list.

Ms Maag, on her maiden campaign, gives herself an even chance of winning Stuttgart North, which the CDU lost narrowly to the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in 2005. But the air hardly crackles with suspense at a forlorn information stand she has set up at the Griegstrasse Shopping Centre in Botnang, a prosperous, CDU-friendly neighbourhood. She and her young retinue outnumber the few passers-by, most of whom dodge the proffered pamphlets. The candidate is cornered by a woman clutching a small dog who wants to know if the CDU will let nuclear power stations be built in the Black Forest. Ms Maag reassures her. …

Nokia World 09 Delivers Details on Booklet 3G Netbook, Nokia N97 Mini Smartphone

Nokia World 09 played out in Stuttgart, Germany, starting Sept. 2. Like Nokia, its President and CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said, Nokia World is about people – people like us, getting together, sharing and exploring ideas, creating and connecting. And, of course, having fun along the way.

During the show, Nokia released details about its anticipated netbook, the Booklet 3G, and it introduced the Mini, a slimmed-down sibling to its flagship N97 device. Also introduced were the 5230 phone, the 5800 Navigation Edition, the X3 and X6 phones, Nokia’s new partnership with Facebook, and the premise of Nokia Money. Nokia also created a Solutions group for more seamlessly integrating its services and devices.

Milan dismiss Chelsea Pirlo offer

Andrea Pirlo

AC Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani says Chelsea’s offer for Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo is too low for them to consider.

Piro, 30, is being pursued by Chelsea, who have reportedly offered about £6.75m plus striker Claudio Pizarro.

"At this price Pirlo is not for sale," Galliani told Italy’s Sky television."

Meanwhile, a Salomon Kalou goal and an Alex Pearce own goal earned Chelsea a 2-2 draw at Reading after they had been 2-0 down with a minute left to play.

Carlo Ancelotti fielded a strong Blues side for their final pre-season match, but the new Chelsea coach is keen to bring in Pirlo, who he convinced to join AC from Milan rivals Inter in 2001, to his squad.

606: DEBATE

"Still not sure if I want this deal to happen or not, but losing Pizarro is a plus I think – throw in Sheva too!"

chelski365

Pirlo is a dead-ball specialist who has helped Milan win one Serie A title and two Champions League crowns. The playmaker was also in Italy’s 2006 World Cup winning squad.

If Ancelotti gets his man, Pirlo will become the club’s fourth signing of the summer, following Yuri Zhirkov, Daniel Sturridge and Ross Turnbull to Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, Milan have joined Tottenham in expressing their interest in Real Madrid striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar.

The Dutchman had been set for a move to German side Stuttgart last week but that fell through due to his wage demands.

Spurs manager Harry Redknapp said last week that he was interested in the 25-year-old striker, although any move for Huntelaar would be dependant on Darren Bent’s transfer to Sunderland going through. </p
