Going Out In Style

Dropkick Murphys will
release their seventh full-length studio album, Going Out In Style, March 1, 2011 on their own
Born & Bred Records (ILG). Produced by Ted Hutt, Going Out In Style features the group’s signature blend of punk
rock energy, folk soul, Irish spirit and American rock ‘n roll on tracks like “Memorial Day” (streaming now at
www.RollingStone.com), “Going Out In Style,” “The Hardest Mile,” “Cruel,” “Climbing A Chair To Bed,” and a rousing
rendition of “Peg O’ My Heart” with guest vocals by Bruce Springsteen.

Fans will get a taste of the new music before it’s released when Dropkick Murphys–Ken Casey (lead
vocals, bass guitar), Al Barr (lead vocals), Matt Kelly (drums, vocals), James Lynch
(guitar, vocals), Tim Brennan (guitars, accordion, whistle, vocals), Jeff DaRosa (banjo, bouzouki,
mandolin, harmonica, vocals) and Scruffy Wallace (bagpipes)–hit the road February 23 for their annual St.
Patrick’s Day U.S. tour. The trek, featuring Against Me! as support on most dates, will wind up in Boston for the
band’s run of St. Patty’s Day week hometown gigs. Also look for the Murphys to tour Europe in April and August,
with additional U.S. dates planned for May and June.

BlackBerry Style 9670 for Sprint Shows Flip Phone a Fitting Form for BlackBerry

The BlackBerry Style 9670 for Sprint, the second smartphone from RIM running the new Blackberry 6 OS, is the first BlackBerry flip phone with a full, four-row QWERTY keyboard. The clamshell flip phone design is sturdy and polished, an attractive form factor seemingly fitting for a BlackBerry. Unfortunately, the Style does not support Sprint’s 4G WiMax network, instead offering 3G EVDO Rev A and 802.11n for connectivity. The Style comes with two low resolution screens& an external screen showing the clock, waiting message indicators, callerID information or media information when the Style is closed& and an internal screen for normal operation when open. Sacrificing some flexibility, the Style only has one convenience key, as RIM eschewed a second button in favor of an externally accessible (theoretically, at least) MicroSD slot. In free societies and tyrannies alike, the hair on, and around, a man’s head always sends an ideological signal

SHAHRYAR, a fashion-conscious young socialite from Tehran, was immensely proud of his Jackson-5-style Afro. The baseej, Iran’s thuggish militia, were less impressed. They arrested him and dragged him away to a local clerical court, on the grounds that his sprouting hairdo was a dangerous Western import. Shahryar argued that since his style was really African, it posed no threat to revolutionary principles. The baseej disagreed: it was African-American so it could pollute Iranian society with the mores of the country’s greatest enemy.

London transport – Soviet style

News that London’s roads will be partially closed during the Olympics in order that athletes and officials can get to the Games on time will leave residents distinctly underwhelmed.

It’s not as if it’s a breeze swanning around the nation’s capital at the best of times but a full 2.5% of roads will be dedicated to the grandiose-sounding ‘Olympic Route Network,’ in a bid to ease the path of those attending the east London jamboree.

This is nothing new of course. Back in the day, Soviet dignatories would glide through Moscow in their Zil limos in dedicated central lanes, while the ever-equal comrades – if they had cars at all – slummed it in whatever road was left.

But hang about. There’s been non-stop trumpeting about how green the London Olympics are going to be, sustainable this and environmental that.

There’s even a so-called British ‘bullet train’ – which to anyone who has meandered about the UK’s rail network will come as a somewhat startling concept – to whisk happy game-goers from St Pancras International rail station to the Olympic site in an eye-wateringly fast seven minutes.

So news of the Soviet-style Zil lanes comes as a bit of a surprise and you can bet anything London taxi drivers – not a breed known for sensitivity – will be fuming.

And anyway, why shouldn’t athletes and officials weasel in like the rest of us. I accept taking a pole vault or javelin on the train might pose a few problems, but it would enliven the journey considerably and bring the Games closer to the people.
