Sat Eye Candy: Phish Influences

THEY LOVE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL AND WE LOVE THEM!

Phish is a band that wears its influences on its sleeve. In their hearty embrace of cover tunes and even in the explicit name checking of artists in their originals. With all eyes on the Greek in Berkeley and the unfolding summer tour, we offer a selection of roots sources for this venerable band touched upon during the current road trip (no, this is not an attempt at a comprehensive survey of Phish’s overall influences, just the ones they themselves have nodded to this summer. We’ll tackle the bigger idea another Saturday…).

This one clearly makes Phish happy because it shows up in the rotation with some regularity.

Phish busted this one out just last night at the Greek. This clip comes from the period when King Crimson’s Adrian Belew was part of the Heads touring ensemble.

Appropriately, Phish opened their 4th of July show with our national anthem, which does seem to touch a nerve in rockers ever since Jimi lit the mother-frucker on fire way back when.

Naming a song “David Bowie” takes brass clankers. Phish has borrowed lustily from both the Thin White Duke’s musical oeuvre and large scale theatrical flair. They pull off both with aplomb.

We’re really glad Page hasn’t adopted cornrows even if they cover this soul bomb.

It’s a treat that Skynyrd’s “The Ballad of Curtis Loew” has been making occasional reappearances in the past year after being absent from setlists since 1993. Here’s a pair of Skynyrd tunes including “Curtis” for y’all.

We end, as Phish did last evening, with a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad Times.” Bright tidings to those lucky enough to be holding a golden ticket for the final night at the Greek!

Keep up with Phish’s Summer Tour in real time with JamBase’s Real-Time Phish Page!

Phish 08.05 | Greek Theatre | Berkeley, CA | Photos

Photos by Susan J Weiand

Phish opened the second leg
of their 2010 Summer Tour last night to a sold out
crowd at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, CA.

Phish 08/05/2010 Greek Theatre
Set 1: Possum, Wolfman’s Brother, The Divided Sky, Funky Bitch, Kill Devil Falls,
Halley’s
Comet > Sample in a Jar, NICU, Bouncing Around the Room, Run Like an Antelope
Set 2: Down with Disease -> Free, Alaska > Back on the Train, Maze, Joy, Tweezer ->
Fluffhead
E: Loving Cup, Tweezer Reprise

Prior to Down With Disease, Trey and Mike both teased Call to the Post and Mike also
teased the Leave It To Beaver theme. Before the encore, but after acknowledging a sign
reading “Stage Banter,” Trey told everyone that he would play a brand new guitar that Paul
Languedoc had made for him, explaining that Paul had “put aside this magic piece of wood
to build me one last really special guitar.” Fish then led the audience in a “Languedoc”
chant.

We have been lucky to have Courtenay Pollock design a new back drop for our Summer Tour. We will be hosting a
silent auction for fans to place bids for a chance to win this beautiful work. A portion of the proceeds from the
auction will benefit the Rex Foundation. Courtenay was the first person commissioned to do Tie Dye for the Grateful
Dead (1970). Courtenay did all the amp covers, speaker covers, and backdrops for the Grateful Dead from 1970-
1985. This is the first multi panel piece since the “Serpent” that was done for the Grateful Dead at the Greek
Theater.”

STS9 RELEASE AXE THE CABLES TODAY ON 1320 RECORDS; SUMMER TOUR KICKS OFF IN AUGUST AT
NEW YORK CITY’S GRAMERCY THEATER & CLOSES WITH TWO NIGHTS AT COLORADO’S RED ROCKS
AMPHITHEATRE

STS9

In December of 2009, STS9
sat down in Denver, Colorado in one of America’s most pristine modern opera houses to create “Axe The Cables… An
Evening of STS9.” What this night encompasses is one of the most flawless evenings of STS9 music in the band’s
decade plus history. The entire show was played, for the most part, sans all “electric” gear including the common
stage instrumentation of laptops and samplers that fans have grown accustomed to as the band’s sound has evolved. The band has
decided to re-mix and re-master this into one massive release on their indie record label, 1320
Records.

Axe the Cables is available now exclusively through 1320 Records and iTunes.

STS9 is on tour in the coming months, performing select intimate acoustic Axe The Cables shows in New
York, Chicago, and Atlanta, as well as plenty of the electronic heavy-hitting events the band is known and loved for,
culminating with their annual, 2 night musical takeover of Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre. STS9 has signed on a slew of supporting acts across the entire tour including Thievery Corporation, Big Gigantic, The Disco Biscuits, The Album Leaf, Lotus, Ghostland Observatory, Bassnectar, Alex B, John Hughes, RJD2, and many more to still to come.

Furthur Cancels 7/5 Vermont Show

INTIMATE REPLACEMENT SHOW ADDED IN STROUDSBURG, PA

Yesterday Furthur issued the following statement on their official site:

July 5th Shelburne Vermont Show CANCELLED

To All Of Our Fans Who’ve Purchased Tickets To Our July 5 Show in Shelburne, VT:

Furthur

After days of meetings to address and alleviate last minute concerns being expressed by State and Local Authorities, Furthur is very disappointed to learn that today (6.24), the local authorities, citing an inability to deal with an expected influx of ticketless fans, traffic concerns, and other issues, have revoked the approved permits for the show and have decided to cancel Furthur’s concert at Vermont’s Shelburne Museum on July 5. As the decision was made by the local authorities so close to the event date, regrettably we are unable to find a suitable alternate venue in Vermont. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience!

Full & complete refunds will be available soon via point of purchase. If you bought tickets online you’ll automatically be refunded.

Replacement Show Added For July 5
We have added a new show on July 5 to replace the recently cancelled show in Vermont.
Furthur will be appearing for an intimate show at The Sherman Theater – Stroudsburg, PA. A limited amount of tickets will be offered via online ticketing starting June 25 at Noon ET.

Public on sale: Saturday, June 26 at 10:00 AM ET.

We are truly sorry that we couldn’t find a suitable venue in Vermont to replace the cancelled Shelburne show, but at this late date, there was nothing available. The Sherman Theatre in Pennsylvania, where we will now be playing on July 5, is a terrific & very intimate venue.

Regretably, tickets for the cancelled July 5 Shelburne will NOT be honored at the Sherman Theater show. We hope to return to Vermont at some time in the future.

Again, our sincere apologies!

Furthur begins their Summer Tour tonight at the Highland Bowl in Rochester, NY.

In what is becoming a Father’s Day tradition (see 6/21/09), the show-opening Brother featured the band
members’ children jumping into a bathtub on stage, followed by Trey introducing each of them and wishing
everyone a Happy Father’s Day. Gotta Jibboo featured Tony Markellis on bass and Mike on a second guitar. The end
of Wilson contained a Dixie tease from Trey. In place of a traditional Makisupa keyword, Trey improvised lines that
set up solos for Mike, then Fish, then Page. The subsequent Piper intro included repeated phrases from the Makisupa
(“Mike,” “Policeman” “SPAC” and “House” among others).

STS9: New Album Out June 29 Acoustic Shows, Red Rocks

ACOUSTIC PERFORMANCE SEES OFFICIAL RELEASE
SUMMER GIGS WITH DISCO BISCUITS, JOHN HUGHES, THIEVERY CORP AND MORE

STS9 by Dave Vann

In December of 2009, STS9 sat down in Denver, Colorado in one of America’s most pristine modern opera houses to create “Axe The Cables… An Evening of STS9.” What this night encompasses is one of the most flawless evenings of STS9 music in the band’s decade plus history. The entire show was played, for the most part, sans all “electric” gear including the common stage instrumentation of laptops and samplers that fans have grown accustomed to as the band’s sound has evolved. The band has decided to remix and remaster this into one massive release on their indie record label 1320 Records. Axe the Cables will be available June 29 exclusively through 1320 Records and iTunes. Plans are also in the works to release correlating HD video of much of the show via iClips.net.

In addition to keeping busy throughout the past year by releasing albums, tapping into their acoustic roots, and zigzagging across the country for live shows, with the overwhelming help and support of their fan-base, STS9 recently achieved their goal of raising $150,000, which will build a home for the Make it Right Foundation in New Orleans. Through $1 per ticket fees, the release of Peaceblaster: The Make it Right Remixes, and VIP sound check events in numerous cities throughout the past year, STS9 will soon break ground on a sustainable home in the Lower 9th Ward, in an effort to help rebuild the great city of New Orleans.

STS9 is on tour in the coming months, performing select intimate acoustic Axe The Cables shows in New York, Chicago, and Atlanta, as well as plenty of the electronic events the band is known and loved for, culminating with their annual, two-night gathering at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre. STS9 has signed on a massive slew of supporting acts across the entire tour, with many more to still to come.
