SPH off 0.5%; 1Q in line, dividend yield supports

Singapore Press Holdings’ (T39.SG) is off 0.5% at S$3.96 with a modest 937,000 shares traded, within the $3.95-$3.99 range that the stock has moved in for the last 6 sessions, in a muted response to the groups’ 1Q earnings. 

UOB KayHian says the 1Q11 performance was within expectations. It notes, net profit declined 29% on year due to the absence of development earnings after the completion of Sky@eleven in 4Q10.

ASX says report supports view Australia benefits from SGX merger

ASX, which is selling itself to Singapore Exchange, said a study it commissioned by Access Economics concludes the deal is in Australia’s interest.

The report “concludes that the formation of ASX-SGX would promote Australia’s national interest since it is highly likely to raise the economic welfare of Australians,” ASX said in an e-mailed statement. It would help the nation become an Asian financial hub, allow Australians to diversify their savings, and lower local companies’ capital costs, according to ASX.

U.S. has supported Serbia’s candidacy bid ahead of the EU decision on Monday, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Thomas Countryman told B92.

He said that the U.S. had positively assessed Serbia’s cooperation with the Hague Tribunal and therefore sent a signal to the EU that it supported Serbia’s candidacy bid.
