Last Saturday night Soulive wrapped up their two week, 10-night stand at Brooklyn Bowl. Easily one of the musical highlights of this young year, the run featured special guests every night, including: Ivan Neville, Robert Randolph, Charlie Hunter, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Kofi and Oteil Burbridge, The Shady Horns, and many more. Most nights featured an opening set from Nigel Hall followed by a set of Soulive in classic trio configuration and a set of Soulive with guests, while some nights saw a third Soulive set go into the early morning hours and even a mini-set from NYC’s own London Souls.

The musical highlights were far too many for this photographer to write about; I’ll have to let my photos speak for themselves. Wetlands founder and current Brooklyn Bowl co-owner Peter Shapiro has once again created an environment where the musicians and fans alike have a great level of comfort that allows for an experience that is like no other. The great success of this run will certainly make Bowlive a can’t miss in the future.

At first, sitting on a pew in a church waiting for a rock show whilst drinking PBR seemed vaguely sacrilegious, but when the music began, surrounded by a few hundred others quietly enjoying a slice of Americana music, the performance didn’t seem that far from any other traditional worship service. The First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia is no stranger to music. The old wooden pews have felt the weight of several lifetimes of prayer. This evening’s prayer just happened to come in the form of music.

The first of a trio of bands, Beantown pluckers Annie and the Beekeepers began the evening on a delightful note as they filled the sanctuary with a charming homespun selection of old-time bluegrass tunes that crept along on pace with the heavy handed upright bass, banjo and guitar. They pulled tones straight out of another era as the two female leads, Annie Lynch and Alexandra Spalding, sang “Always in Love.” The song’s soaring melodies and distinctive plucked chords moved us to tap our feet and nod our heads in appreciation. Ken Woodward and a friend of theirs from college on loan from Memphis filled in the gaps with lap steel guitar and bass.

Next, Lissie Maurus came on like a warm California breeze, all laid back and shoeless. This Illinois native ran to California five years ago and sure hasn’t hurt the growing country/folk scene settling in Los Angeles. Her debut EP, Why You Runnin’, has been making music lovers and critics take notice. Local radio station WXPN has not let a day go by in over a month without playing her songs. Lissie makes music that is hard to shy away from. Her throwback approach to ’70s folk rock contains just enough psychedelic spike and indie grit to really get the blood pumping.

Underneath the loud guitars and striking songs is Maurus herself. She’s an instantly likeable performer whose comfort level onstage places a calm over the crowd. All you can see is her scraggly blond hair and huge glasses poking from behind the mic stand. She sang smoky circles that were punctuated with powerful cries and low, drawn out bits of uplifting tonal perfection. Her songs created a broad warm atmosphere that echoed around the beams and vaulted ceilings. The distance between the pews and the stage melted as we leaned in closer to be nearer to this unique performer. Maurus was soon surrounded by several hundred attentive, glowing admirers, her natural draw generated not only by who she is now but perhaps more for what she will inevitably become. By her side were Lewis Keller, her bass playing kick drum and hi-hat drummer, and dread-locked lead guitarist Eric Sullivan. Other than Sullivan’s solos, her bandmates best added to the performance by harmonizing with Lissie vocally.

The opening cover of Hank William‘ “Wedding Bells” was an apropos choice to set the mood. They ran circles around the venue with their three-part harmonies on “Here Before,” another track off her breakthrough EP. Lissie kicked her leg as she worked her electric guitar, strumming the low-slung instrument with a gutsy hand and rhythmic confidence. She reminded me of Heartless Bastards‘ Erika Wennerstrom with a whiskey smooth stir of Susan Tedeschi and a haunting, female yang to Bon Iver‘s male yin.

The first real rock moment of the evening came at the end of “In Sleep,” Maurus’ tale of lost luggage on a flight across the pond from England to Philly. If she had a full drum set on this tune our numbers would have lost it and started dancing with the Holy Spirit in the aisles. “In Sleep” is an addictive piece of pop folk psychedelia that has the potential to reach the masses. The song flowed with a heavy drip of bass and hi-hat that tangled with bright, grain soaked vocals, which built in waves and pulled you into a wonderful rock & roll trance. Lissie never missed a note, spilling out warm, vintage tones as she held the refrain for a few measures on the chorus: “In sleep is the only place I get to see him/ I get to love him/ I love him/ I love him/ I love him.”

Lissie’s set ended with a stellar rendition of “Little Lovin’.” This version took the remarkable studio version and added a clapping jam involving the audience, and if you only caught that portion of the evening you would have sworn it was a spirited church service.

It’s not an easy task following two immensely talented bands with distinct voices, unless you’re the Providence-based roots band The Low Anthem that is. They did what they do best and produced dreamlike music that crept into our heads like a slow, delicate fog rising from melting evening snow. The stage swelled with musical instruments. A list on the band’s MySpace page boasts a slew of instruments on tour with them, including a WWI portable pump organ, a harmonium, a rusty saw, and a particularly sizzling set of crotales amongst other items you may or may not recognize.

Founding member Ben Knox Miller began with a haunting lo-fi story of the “Ticket Taker” sung with his soft, welcoming voice. The aloof qualities of Jocie Adams‘ clarinet blended with the quirky side of Mat Davidson‘s saw and placed our mouths agape. The Low Anthem had us captivated with silence. Instead of building on Lissie’s energy, they experimented with the limits of the sanctuary, making its acoustics bend in their favor as they performed a lullaby that paid homage to Leonard Cohen.

The Low Anthem shares a sensibility and similarity to Andrew Bird, but they play with the music like the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey or Marco Benevento Trio. The Low Anthem acknowledged a deep respect for old music and maybe more so for classic instruments. Their own music is filled with spirits of Americana, and you can hear echoes of Chris Hillman and Woody Guthrie. They moved easily from Jack Kerouac to Tom Waits and showed signs of fire during “Horizon Is a Beltway,” another track off of their acclaimed 2009 acclaimed release Oh My God, Charlie Darwin.

Onstage the four band members were everywhere, and they constantly switched instruments. Adams handed over the drums to bassist Jeff Prystowsky on “Sally, Where’d You Get Your Liquor From?” as we stomped to the simple, powerful beat pouring from the stacks on either side of the stage. Adams eventually played us back to silence with long-drawn bow strokes on the crotales. Her touch produced a resonance that echoed throughout the church as she made the crotales cry spectral tones skyward.

It was Prystowsky’s wildly concocted upright bass solo and Miller’s drumming that brought us back to reality as Davidson’s piano work carried us passionately forward. Before they concluded with “To Ohio,” The Low Anthem produced one of the most intriguing musical experiments many of us had ever witnessed. Miller said that “To the Ghosts Who Write History Books” would start as a sing-along and would change into something beautiful and different by the last verses. He noted that if we came with someone else that we should call each other and place the phones on speakerphone next to one another. Not wanting to taint the beautiful performance with a harsh cell phone noise, this sent hushed mumbles through the crowd. We doubted at first, but as we each started to hear the result we all followed along. As the song grew to a finale, the sonic reverberance of two cell phones speaking to each other grew and the sanctuary echoed with a most amazing, hollow tone of sonic bliss. We giggled at the resulting noises as a new being took shape, one that we all created and left there in the hiss and buzz of our own portable talking devices.

All three bands are on tour from the East Coast to SXSW, where they will each play several showcases. Judging from the performances in Philadelphia, you’ll be hearing a lot more about these bands soon if you don’t already adore them now.

Herbie Hancock‘s The Imagine Project, the new CD from multiple Grammy-winning artist and musical pioneer Herbie Hancock, is an unprecedented international recording and film project featuring collaborations between music legend Herbie Hancock and over a dozen superstars from every region of the planet. Utilizing the universal language of music to express its central themes of peace and global responsibility, the musical collaborations combine Hancock’s genre-defying musical vision with the “local” musical identity of cultures from around the world. Additionally, noted Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney (“Taxi To The Dark Side”) is serving as one of the film’s producers with veteran music producer Larry Klein serving as one of the album’s producing consultants. The Imagine Project is set for release June 22, 2010 via Hancock Records/RED.

Originally conceived as a celebration for Radio Woodstock’s 25th anniversary, Mountain Jam has grown into an annual stop for some of the biggest names in live music. The 2010 event has confirmed that Levon Helm & Friends, Drive-By Truckers, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Dr. Dog, The Whigs, The New Mastersounds, Jay Farrar (of Son Volt), Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, The Duke & The King, Justin Townes Earle, Jerry Joseph & Wally Ingram, The Bridge, Zach Deputy, The Brew, Simone Felice, Gandalf Murphy & The Slambovian Circus of Dreams and Van Ghost have all joined the sixth annual Mountain Jam Music Festival’s growing lineup.

Radio Woodstock and guitarist Warren Haynes (Gov’t Mule, The Allman Brothers Band, The Dead) are proud to announce that the Mountain Jam Music Festival will return to Hunter, NY from Friday, June 4 – Sunday, June 6, 2010.

GOV’T MULE will anchor the multi-band bill for the sixth year in a row with two headlining performances. Haynes’ fellow Allman Brothers Band guitarist DEREK TRUCKS will introduce a new band featuring his wife, singer SUSAN TEDESCHI, to Mountain Jam. The new group will feature an original mixture of rock, soul, blues and roots songs by Trucks and Tedeschi, both of whom received 2010 Grammy Award nominations. Mountain Jam favorites MICHAEL FRANTI & SPEARHEAD will make an exclusive northeast summer festival appearance with their return to Mountain Jam for a 5th consecutive year.

Mountain Jam’s initial lineup also includes many performers who are making their debut at the Festival, including current indie darlings THE AVETT BROTHERS, touring behind their major label debut, I and Love and You, Primus bassist LES CLAYPOOL, performing a late night outdoor set on the Mountain, reggae architect TOOTS AND THE MAYTALS, Colorado jamgrass sensations YONDER MOUNTAIN STRING BAND, Hassidic reggae star MATISYAHU, ALO, LETTUCE, JONATHAN TYLER & THE NORTHERN LIGHTS, ELMWOOD, THE LONDON SOULS, Traffic guitarist DAVE MASON and DARK STAR ORCHESTRA.

The Early Bird 3-Day Festival Passes are $141.50 or $161.50 with camping. A limited number of Early Bird VIP Passes will be available for $404.50. The 11th Annual Hannah’s Buddies Charity Classic and Concert will take place February 19 & 20, 2010. The golf tournament — a four person scramble — will tee off Friday mid-day. The tournament will conclude with a reception and live music. Each golfer is allowed one guest for the reception.

On February 20, the golfers gather again at the House of Blues for the dinner and silent auction at 4:30 p.m. Each golfer is allowed one guest to accompany them for the evening. Following the dinner/silent auction is the John Bell and Friends Benefit Bash beginning at 8:00 p.m. Two tickets for the concert are included.

Experience Hendrix Tour 2010

EXPERIENCE HENDRIX TOUR LAUNCHES IN MARCH, 2010
ALL STAR LINEUP INCLUDES JOE SATRIANI, LIVING COLOUR, DAVID HIDALGO, MANY MORE

Experience Hendrix, the fourth edition of the biennial concert tour that features an all star lineup of music greats paying homage to the music and legacy of Jimi Hendrix gets underway in early March of next year with special performances across the country.

Featured artists who will be performing music written and inspired by Hendrix include some of the best known and most respected artists in contemporary rock and blues, including Joe Satriani, Jonny Lang, Eric Johnson, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Brad Whitford (Aerosmith), Doyle Bramhall II, Ernie Isley, Living Colour, Chris Layton (Double Trouble), along with bassist Billy Cox.

Cox, who first befriended Hendrix when the two were in the 101st Airborne Division of U.S. Army, played in both the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys and performed with Hendrix at such landmark festivals as Woodstock and the Isle of Wight. Cox commented, “It’s a thrill for me to play Jimi’s music for audiences now as it was in the 1960s. The Experience Hendrix tours have shown how timeless this music really is.” Joe Satriani remarked, “I finally get to pay tribute to my hero the right way, onstage with an amazing, once in a lifetime, lineup of musicians!”

Sacred Steel, featuring Robert Randolph, Susan Tedeschi, and David Hidalgo and Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos are also performing on selected Experience Tour dates.

Various combinations of these music greats will be performing Jimi’s signature songs, including “Purple Haze,” “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” “The Wind Cries Mary,” “Little Wing,” and “Red House.” As has been the case with previous Experience Hendrix tour incarnations, special guests are expected to sit in at many of the dates, making the concerts all that much more memorable for both new and veteran Hendrix fans. Past special guests have included Paul Rodgers, Buddy Guy, and Carlos Santana.

Shepherd, a veteran of several Experience Hendrix tours remarked, “Jimi Hendrix’s music has really inspired to push the limits of my own music. He didn’t observe any boundaries musically. He was an amazing player and a tremendous showman so I incorporated some of his showmanship in what I do.” As far as having been part of the Experience Hendrix touring phenomenon, Shepherd noted, “It touches you on the inside and gets you fired up.”

The Experience Hendrix Tour is presented by Experience Hendrix, LLC, the Hendrix family-owned company founded by James A. “Al” Hendrix, Jimi’s father, entrusted with preserving and protecting the legacy of Jimi Hendrix. Earlier this year, Sony Music Entertainment’s Legacy Division and Experience Hendrix entered into a worldwide catalog licensing venture to make all of Jimi’s extraordinary music, including classic albums, never before heard archive recordings, and filmed concerts available through all forms of media.

Launching on the west coast, the month-long tour will bring the troupe of players, each a headliner in his or her own right, to concert venues in major U.S. markets including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Denver, Minneapolis, Chicago, St. Louis and Atlanta.

Savannah Music Fest 2010 Season

Tickets are now on sale for the 2010 Savannah Music Festival (SMF), which runs from March 18 through April 3. Opening with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and Chinese superstar pianist Lang Lang. The 21st edition of Georgia’s largest music festival features its most diverse array of acts ever. Called “one of the best events around the world” by The Times of London, SMF’s 2010 season is comprised of original productions, unique pairings, and a focus on instrumental virtuosity, including world-class artists in jazz, classical, bluegrass, blues, gospel, and a wide variety of other American and international musical traditions. Set in the idyllic atmosphere of Savannah in the early spring, these unique programs combine to create a musical arts event with worldwide resonance. Tickets are available here.

SMF Executive & Artistic Director Rob Gibson remarks, “With the ever widening gap between commercial music and the performing arts, we want to serve as a bridge that connects audiences with a wide range of first-class artistry, while also illuminating musical traditions from all over the world.”

Savannah Music Festival Original Productions
For the sixth year, SMF Associate Artistic Director and acclaimed violinist Daniel Hope has curated an original chamber music series called Sensations. Daniel Hope and friends welcome first-time guests and musical collaborators Gabriela Montero, Gautier Capuçon, Mark O’Connor, and Jeffrey Kahane.

Highlights of the series include performances of both sextets written by Brahms, a program entitled Forbidden Music, featuring works by composers incarcerated in the Thereseinstadt concentration camp including Schulhoff, Schull, Klein and Haas performed at Temple Mickve Israel (the third oldest Jewish temple in America), and an American music program featuring an O’Connor String Quartet, Heifetz‘ Gershwin arrangements, and works by Williams, Copland, and Bernstein. Pianists Sebastian Knauer and Jeffrey Kahane will perform a one-time only duo recital.

The New Orleans Blues Party features the Henry Butler Trio joined by several special guests and jazz greats throughout the evening. Additional jazz and blues productions include the annual Piano Showdown, which this year pits Butler, Marcus Roberts, Gerald Clayton, and Dick Hyman at opposite ends of the stage, on different Steinways, performing solos and duets. Ben Tucker at 80, celebrates the birthday of Savannah’s beloved jazz bassist/composer in a program featuring such jazz stalwarts as Marcus Printup, Wycliffe Gordon, and Kevin Bales. The prolific jazz pianist Dick Hyman plays an all-Fats Waller concert. All Star Swing Summit, the culmination of SMF’s Swing Central High School Jazz Band Competition & Workshop, features the Clayton Brothers, the Marcus Roberts Trio, the Ted Nash Ensemble, and the Georgia Horns featuring Chris Crenshaw, Wycliffe Gordon and Marcus Printup.

A multi-generational gathering of great mandolinists featuring Mike Marshall, Chris Thile, and Caterina Lichtenberg reaches back to the origins of the instrument in Italian music from the 1600s, also spotlighting the mandolin’s history up to the present day. The most formidable husband/wife team in the history of southern rock/blues, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, perform a set of ’60s and ’70s soul music.

The Last Waltz Ensemble

The Last Waltz Ensemble will celebrate rock-n-roll history, The Band, and the music of Bob Dylan when they perform their Sixth Annual Thanksgiving Holiday Concert Celebration at Smith’s Old Bar in Atlanta on November 28.

In the tradition of The Band’s 1976 final performance, the group will be joined by musical guests and friends. Expect performances by The Dirty Dozen Brass Band horns of Kevin Harris and Efrem Townes, Charlie Starr from up and coming southern rock super group Blackberry Smoke, John Liebman of The Electromatics, David Fisch of Fish Mouth Fools fame, and Nelson Nolen.

Thanksgiving, 1976: The Band, together with Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Joni Mitchell, and others, gathered together in Winterland Ballroom to celebrate The Band’s final concert. Martin Scorsese filmed the event, and that footage became The Last Waltz, one of the greatest musical documentaries of all time.

Progressively playing the music of The Band and Bob Dylan, The Last Waltz Ensemble executes both traditional and original arrangements in an improvisational jam band format. Their playlist includes renowned favorites such as “Like a Rolling Stone,” “Don’t Do It,” and “The Shape I’m In,” as well as tracks from other areas of the featured artists’ careers. True to the spirit of The Band, this ensemble presents some of the most polished and timeless music in rock history, reinforcing their sound through vintage equipment, special guest performances, and ever-changing set lists.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and Case Western Reserve University celebrated Janis Joplin during the 14th annual American Music Masters series, entitled Kozmic Blues: The Life and Music of Janis Joplin, Sunday night to a near-capacity audience at the State Theater in Playhouse Square. The concert lineup consisted of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Ray Benson, Guy Clark, Roky Erickson, Nick Gravenites, Nona Hendryx, Bettye LaVette, Country Joe McDonald, Bob Neuwirth, Powell St. John, Susan Tedeschi, Lucinda Williams, Carolyn Wonderland, and Santana co-founders Gregg Rolie and Michael Carrabello.

Artists performed heartfelt and rousing tributes throughout the nearly three hour concert culminating with Lucinda Williams debuting a yet-to-be titled song written in honor of Janis.

The evening’s tribute, through photographs, video and song, wove a narrative of Joplin’s life and groundbreaking art that broke down barriers for women in rock and roll. Highlights included Bettye LaVette’s soulful take on “Piece of My Heart,” which she recorded in 1969, Susan Tedeschi’s powerful interpretation of “Kozmic Blues,” Guy Clark’s poignant “She Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere,” Nick Gravenites’ “Buried Alive in the Blues” – a song Joplin was due to record the week that she died – and Bob Neuwirth’s inviting the Joplin Family onstage to join him to sing “Mercedes Benz.”

Terry Stewart, president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum presented Joplin’s brother and sister, Michael and Laura with an American Music Masters Award to close the show.

Honoree Jerry Lee Lewis, who was not scheduled to perform at the 2007 concert, was moved to take the stage at the end of the show. Lewis tenderly played the piano and sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. At the first American Music Masters tribute concert, Bruce Springsteen set the bar high and performed in honor of Woody Guthrie. The most star-studded and unique performance by a trio was Aretha Franklin, Solomon Burke, and Elvis Costello paying tribute to Sam Cooke in 2005. Last year, a 93-year-old Les Paul took the stage with his trio and then led an epic jam with some of rock and roll’s greatest guitarists, from Jennifer Batten to Slash.

Widespread Panic and The Allman Brothers Band began the second leg of their co-headlining tour over the weekend with a pair of shows at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Charlotte, NC. On Saturday evening guitarist Warren Haynes was unable to perform due to travel complications and Jimmy Herring subbed for the entire show. Haynes’ Gov’t Mule bandmate, Danny Louis also joined the Allmans on keys to help support Gregg Allman who was suffering from back pain. Allman performed the entire show on guitar and was still able to sing.

JJ Grey & Mofro, the Jacksonville, Florida-based swamp, blues, rock, funk, and soul band, have announced quite a massive North American fall tour. In addition to headlining theatre and festival dates, the band will share dates with blues guitarist/vocalist Susan Tedeschi and guitarist Derek Trucks. Then, in late September and running through November, JJ Grey & Mofro will embark on a co-headlining tour with country rock outlaw Shooter Jennings and special guest Earl Greyhound.

Grey’s most recent album, Orange Blossoms, has been hailed by USA Today as “intoxicating North Florida blues-rock, with hints of Memphis, Muscle Shoals and garage-band music.” In every song he writes and sings, Grey exudes rocking, funky, melodic front-porch realism.
