Hewlett-Packard first demonstrated its new Slate 500 tablet computer in January at CES in Las Vegas. Now, after a series of development fits and starts, you can finally buy one just in time for the holidays. Hewlett-Packard says this 6-inch-by-9-inch touch-screen device is not a direct competitor to the Apple iPad and that it wants to position it as primarily a business tool. The company may be making the right call overall. But the market will ultimately determine who buys what and for what purpose. "You won’t be able to buy this at retail," HP Personal Systems Group Public Relations Manager Mike Hockey told eWEEK. "We’re making it available strictly on our Website, because we’re looking at it as a business-type device." HP contends that the Slate 500 is a tablet computer that can do anything a regular PC can do, since it comes installed with the professional version of Windows 7 and has the look and feel of a regular PC.
