Java, Python, Apex, Windows Top List of IT Skills in Demand This Year

Thinking about brushing up on your technology skills to remain competitive in the marketplace? While its no secret that experience matters, in this challenging job market, it helps to look at which skills are bringing in the most dollars before deciding which technology to focus on. Even though salaries remained stagnant for the second year in a row, there were some areas that had growth, such as in programming languages Python and Perl, or for FibreChannel experts in storage. The survey also found that despite nearly half of the people holding technology certifications, they may not be as helpful as expected, as 51.9 percent of the respondents said the certifications havent helped them find new jobs. The following gallery is a look at 12 of technology skills in storage, application development, operating systems, databases, and networking as well as the national averages for salaries using those skills. Tablets, Smartphones Fuel 10 Technology Trends for 2011: Deloitte

Consultancy Deloitte Jan. 18 celebrated the tenth anniversary of its predictions, which it launched in 2001 with 10 predictions about mobile telephony. The forecast has evolved to cover technology, telecommunications and media. Deloitte employs 10,000 services professionals who have their fingers on the pulse of these sectors. These pros whip up a list of trends they see for each New Year. Then, Deloitte taps its so-called "second network" of clients, who are interviewed by the service pros for insights into the top trends. The trends share a common theme, which the consultancy characterizes as such: "Deloitte sees a 2011 where consumers and enterprises will be dealing with diversity in hardware-computing platforms, in software operating systems and in wireless-network access." Another way to put it is that the influx of WiFi and 3G-powered smartphones such as Apple’s iPhone and Google Android handsets, as well as tablet computers such as Apple’s iPad and its litany of Android-based counterparts flooding the market, are presenting IT managers with more choices and more management challenges. For example, CIOs must be wary of when and how to allow these machines to tap into cloud-computing services. That’s the chief theme in the enterprise that eWEEK sees for 2011. eWEEK spotlights 10 of Deloitte’s trends in this slideshow. – …

Medical technology: Frugal healing

Inexpensive Asian innovation will transform the market for medical devices

NINETY minutes north-east of Beijing lies what may be the future of medical technology. Weigao, a Chinese firm that started as a state-owned “township enterprise”, has built a research and manufacturing centre where the laboratories are surprisingly chilly. Only the clean room, it seems, is fully climate-controlled. And that offers a lesson about frugal innovation. Whereas Western technology firms have plush premises, in China the people shiver while fancy equipment stays warm.

Though cold, Weigao’s labs are a steaming cauldron of creativity. Medtronic, a giant American maker of medical devices, entered a joint venture with the Chinese firm two years ago. Its designers and engineers work side by side with local talent, and have already launched half a dozen inexpensive, novel products that Medtronic would not have made on its own. …

Information technology goes global: Tanks in the cloud

Computing services are both bigger and smaller than assumed

CLOUDS bear little resemblance to tanks, particularly when the clouds are of the digital kind. But statistical methods used to count tanks in the second world war may help to answer a question that is on the mind of many technology watchers: How big is the computing cloud?

This is not just a question for geeks. Computing clouds—essentially digital-service factories—are the first truly global utility, accessible from all corners of the planet. They are among the world’s biggest energy hogs and thus account for a lot of carbon dioxide emissions. More happily, they allow firms in developing countries to leapfrog traditional information technology (IT) and benefit from advanced computing services without having to build expensive infrastructure. …
