Sinotel Technologies signs deal with China Telecom to promote fixed line, fibre-optic broadband …

Mainboard-listed Sinotel Technologies, the provider of wireless telecommunications infrastructure and solutions in China, says the group has signed a deal with China Telecom to promote its fixed line, fibre-optic broadband and IPTV services on an income-sharing basis.

Under the agreement, the group will develop high speed fibre-optic infrastructure for four residential districts in Shanxi, namely Wen Ting Ban Li, Hu Pan Xiao Chu, Ji Zhen Cun and Tai Hua, connecting homes directly to China Telecom’s core network. The connection will make available to home users fixed-line telephone, broadband internet and IPTV services. The installation of fibre optics would provide seamless transfer speeds and endure less data loss due to its immunity to electromagnetic interference whilst in transit.

The sharing of net income derived from the three services is as below:

  China Telecom Sinotel
Fixed-line telephone 60% 40%
Broadband Internet 60% 40%
IPTV 30% 70%

The contract between Sinotel and China Telecom is valid for five years and during this period, the joint partners have exclusive rights to provide the above services to these residential districts.

The group anticipates this business segment to be one of the growth drivers for Sinotel in the next year and intends to replicate this model in other provinces and communities.

Portugal Telecom and Spain’s Telefonica squabble over Brazil

“THE scale of Portugal Telecom is an asset for the country. We don’t want a small company, we want a big one.” So pronounced Portugal’s prime minister, Jose Socrates, this week, defending Portugal Telecom’s rejection of a hostile bid from Spain’s Telefonica for its share of Vivo, a fast-growing Brazilian mobile operator. Zeinal Bava, the boss of the Portuguese firm, added a warning that leaving Brazil would mean “amputating Portugal Telecom’s future”.

Yet such surgery may prove hard to resist, given Telefonica’s financial clout. The Spanish firm offered €5.7 billion ($7.2 billion) in cash for the bit of Vivo that it does not own. That is equivalent to over 80% of the total market value of Portugal Telecom itself. …

Innovation@Intel: Real-time Privacy Monitoring on Mobile Devices

Mobile phone applications routinely access data for context-aware services, which may result in unintended security exposure. Geo-coordinates of the phone can be accurately tracked and exposed to third parties without the user’s knowledge. Or applications could access the phone’s microphone and record the audio. Intel Labs Berkeley and Intel Labs Seattle researchers recently demonstrated a proof-of-concept system called “mPrivacy Scope” for real-time privacy monitoring on mobile devices. It tracks personal sensor data use (and abuse) by mobile applications for flexible and complete privacy protection on smart phones.

Stephane Richard, the new boss of France Telecom, wants to overhaul its strategy as well as its offices

WHEN Stephane Richard appeared recently in Paris Match, a celebrity and news magazine, lightly tanned in an open-necked shirt and leaning jauntily against the corporate logo of his new firm, France Telecom, he raised eyebrows in the buttoned-down world of French telecoms. Mr Richard did not attend the elite engineering school which produces almost all of France’s senior telecoms executives, including his predecessor at France Telecom, Didier Lombard, and the boss of Vivendi, a rival. Instead, he is a political operator who has made a fortune in property. He is a friend of Nicolas Sarkozy, France’s president, and worked until recently as chief of staff to the finance minister. He became boss of France Telecom last month with the immediate task of responding to a wave of suicides among employees which had prompted a political outcry.

Since 2008 over 30 France Telecom employees have killed themselves, some explicitly blaming the company. Even though the firm’s suicide rate is in line with the national average, France Telecom says that it was partly to blame. Because of the group’s former status as part of government, 66,000 or 65% of its employees are classed as civil servants, with guaranteed tenure. Unable to fire them, France Telecom instead subjected them to a system called “Time to Move”, in which they were obliged to change offices and jobs abruptly every few years. …
