GIC trims Citi stake to below 5%; reaps $2.3b in profit

Singapore’s largest sovereign wealth fund GIC said today it had halved its stake in Citigroup (C.N) to below 5%, making a profit of US$1.6 billion ($2.3 billion) as global equity marketss rebound.

The stake sale came after Singapore‘s smaller fund Temasek Holdings (TEM.UL) lost an estimated over US$4 billion in Bank of America-Merrill Lynch (BAC.N) and Barclays (BARC.L) in hasty exits around the start of 2009. 

Ireland’s eircom sticks to job cuts after STT deal

Irish telecoms group eircom reaffirmed plans for significant job cuts despite prospects of a capital boost from future majority owner Singapore Technologies Telemedia (STT), eircom’s chief executive said today.

Australia-listed eircom Holdings Ltd (ERC.AX), the current majority owner of indebted eircom, last Monday announced it has accepted a takeover offer from STT, a unit of Singapore state investor Temasek Holdings (TEM.UL).

Temasek’s portfolio climbs 32% in April-July

Singapore sovereign wealth fund Temasek’s portfolio climbed 32% between April and end-July this year to $172 billion, recouping much of its losses for the last financial year, as global markets rallied.

Temasek (TEM.UL) said that investments it made in rights issues of its portfolio companies, including DBS Group (DBSM.SI) and Standard Chartered (STAN.L), had more than doubled in value up to end-July. 

Mapletree plans Singapore REIT, Vietnam fund

Mapletree Investments is ready to list a real estate investment trust in Singapore that may hold as much as $4 billion in assets when stock market conditions improve, CEO Hiew Yoon Khong said on Friday.
 
He also said that Mapletree, a wholly owned unit of Singapore state investor Temasek (TEM.UL), planned to launch a Vietnam property fund and an Asian industrial property fund in the next 12 months. The firm hopes to raise between US$500 million ($712 million)to US$1 billion for each fund. 

Eircom says talks with Singapore’s Telemedia ongoing

Eircom Holdings (ERC.AX), majority shareholder of Irish telecoms group eircom, said talks on a transaction with Singapore Technologies Telemedia (STT) were continuing with a view to agreeing a recommended deal.

STT, a unit of Singapore state investor Temasek Holdings (TEM.UL), earlier this month made a revised bid for eircom Holdings worth a total of A$230 million ($275 million).

Thai Shin Corp. says Temasek stake sale depends on market

A plan by Singapore’s Temasek Holdings (TEM.UL) to sell its stake in Thailand’s leading telecoms group, Shin Corp (SHIN.BK), will depend on market conditions, an official at the Thai firm said today.

The plan is followed closely by investors as it is likely to increase the volume of Shin shares trading in the market. Some analysts see the stock as a good proxy for Thailand’s telecoms industry but say the low free float is a trading risk.
