NEW YORK – Aafia Siddiqui, a Pakistani neuroscientist, who was convicted of allegedly trying to kill American soldiers and FBI agents in Afghanistan, was sentenced to 86 years in prison on Thursday in the Federal District Court in New York City.
Siddiqui, 38, in a white scarf, was calm when Judge Richard Berman pronounced the maximum sentence, but said that she was innocent. Outside the court building noisy demonstrations were staged by human rights activists and other supporters calling for her repatriation to Pakistan.
One of her lawyers, Dawn Cardi, said that the defence team, hired by the Pakistan Government, would appeal against the sentence but Siddiqui disowned them. “They don’t represent me.”
Her case had attracted the attention of human rights groups, some of which conducted campaigns in favour of her release or a lenient sentence. Her lawyers had requested a sentence of 12 years, while the government prosecutors had pressed for a life sentence. The prosecutors insisted that the court had the duty to protect the American people.
Siddiqui, who got biology and neuroscience degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Brandeis University, had punctuated her 14-day trial with numerous outbursts, resulting in her being ejected from the courtroom on several occasions.
Prior to her sentencing, Siddiqui disputed claims by her lawyers that she has a mental illness. She also urged her supporters not to lobby for her or turn violent. “I stand for peace and justice,” she said.
“I do not want a 9/11,” she added. “I do not want any bloodshed.”
A jury found Siddiqui guilty in February of seven charges, including two counts of attempted murder. The jury found there wasnÂ’t premeditation in the attempted murder charges.
Siddiqui denied she was against Israel as projected in the press. But Israel has arrested Palestinian children and she was critical of the Jewish State’s policies. “I love all countries, including her homeland-Pakistan,” she said.
She said Islam had taught her to be patient and forgiving.
After she was sentenced Thursday, Siddiqui turned to the audience and urged the public to forgive the persons involved in her case and not to take any actions of revenge.
Siddiqui, according to the Americans interrogators, who travelled to Ghazni, was behind a curtain in the second-floor room where they gathered. She burst from behind the curtain, grabbed an American soldierÂ’s rifle and started firing, prosecutors said.
She was shot in the abdomen by a soldier who returned fire with his sidearm, prosecutors said.
Siddiqui has denied grabbing the weapon or having any familiarity with firearms.
At trial, she testified that she was simply trying to escape the room and was shot by someone who saw her. She claimed she was concerned at the time about being transferred to a “secret” prison.
“He saw me and he got scared. He said, ‘she’s free’ or ‘she’s loose,’ “ she said at the time.
On Thursday, Siddiqui, who has previously expressed displeasure with her lawyers and the US legal process, said that she didnÂ’t want the lawyers on her case to file an appeal and that she didnÂ’t want them to take any further action in her case.
SiddiquiÂ’s mental state has loomed large over her trial, with her lawyers claiming she suffers from schizophrenia.
Judge Berman, who is presiding, found her competent to stand trial. He noted Thursday that experts for the defence and the prosecution gave conflicting opinions about SiddiquiÂ’s mental state and that she had been uncooperative with prison psychologists.
During the hearing, Siddiqui raised her hands and shook her head several times when her lawyer, Dawn Cardi, argued she had a mental illness.
“I do not have any mental illness,” Siddiqui said.
The judge ordered that she receive periodic mental evaluations while serving her sentence. He also recommended that she should be shifted to a medical facility in Texas.

Object-Oriented Storage: 14 Things You May Not Know
Reducing storage costs is becoming a high agenda item for IT organizations, yet data and efficient access to it is an organization’s most valuable asset. Struggling with the performance, scalability and management complexity required to maintain conventional file-based storage systems is a losing battle if data needs to be stored more than 90 days. One way to approach this is to use an object-oriented storage system, which simplifies the process. Object-oriented storage differs from unstructured file storage in that the objects filed are not housed in volumes or attached to a directory. Objects are simply assigned an ID number or name with detailed metadata and can be retrieved at any time. The source for this slide show is Caringo, an Austin, Texas-based provider of content storage software enabling clustered storage for active and archived content. – …

WASHINGTON, D.C., Sept. 14, 2010 – Walter Payton College Prep, a Chicago high school with a student body representing youth from more than 100 elementary schools around the city, took home the top award in the Intel Schools of Distinction contest tonight in Washington, D.C.
Other schools winning big include Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (Alexandria, Va); Roxbury Preparatory Charter School (Roxbury, Mass.); Westdale Heights Academic Magnet School (Baton Rouge, La.); M.S. 223 The Laboratory School of Finance and Technology (Bronx, N.Y.); and West Elementary (Wamego, Kan.).

The Walter Payton College Preparatory High School based in Chicago took home the Star Innovator Award, which brings an additional $15,000 from the Intel Foundation, for a total of $175,000 in cash and prizes. Payton is a citywide magnet school that serves a diverse student body and focuses on mathematics, science and world languages. Math teachers participate in lesson study and are highly engaged in collaborative processes. All courses include measurement, data analysis and modeling activities, using the same digital lab instruments used in science classes. The school schedule includes block lessons once a week and innovative, co-curricular seminars throughout the semester to engage students in the study of advanced or unusual topics.
More than a quarter of students take five or more math courses before graduation, opting for AP Statistics and university-level electives. More than 99 percent of Payton students meet or exceed state math standards. Additionally, Payton students have a 98 percent graduation rate and excel in academic competitions. The school also has an excellent record for helping students qualify for AP courses and pass AP tests.

Dell, HP Stubbornly Raise Stakes in Bidding War for 3PAR

Sat Eye Candy: Stevie Ray Vaughan
BLUES ROCK GIANT GONE 20 YEARS
Yesterday marked the 20th anniversary of Stevie Ray Vaughan‘s untimely death, but so overstuffed with life is the music he left behind that it hardly seems possible that he’s gone. Texas born Vaughan exuded red hot passion and a grabbing, exciting gusto to get into it, whatever “it” might be. When he arrived on the national scene in the early 1980s he re-infused the blues with a rawness and vitality that the increasingly slick genre was sorely in need of. And then he took it much, much further, offering his painfully honest, heart touching, utterly wounded story in songs that tear one up to this day. There was also the good time, boot scootin’ Dallas boy who reminded us how to boogie, but it’s the sharp truthfulness of his longing, his admittance to personal failings and his subsequent rise into hope and rejuvenation that makes his work endure as it has.
For myself, Stevie Ray Vaughan is crystallized in a single night and even a single moment during that evening. It was New Year’s Eve 1987 at the Henry J. Kaiser Auditorium in Oakland, CA. A clean & sober Stevie Ray and the lock-tight Double Trouble hit the midnight hour charging in hard party mode, the capacity crowd already well warmed up by The Paladins and Tower of Power. But as the minutes crept into the first day of 1988, Vaughan took it down – way down. Though a native Texan, Stevie Ray had become a fixture in Oakland and around the Bay Area, and for a spell made his dedicated fans, myself included, seriously worried about his health and future. His triumph over his demons and subsequent commercial and artistic success was something felt in a hearty, happy way by those of us who’d watched him evolve for years. During a wrenching version of “Life Without You,” he began to testify in his quiet way about just how lucky and blessed and goddamn pleased he was to be here doing what he was doing. It was as simple and direct an expression of profound gratitude as any person has ever uttered, and he followed it with a guitar solo that still raises hairs on my neck. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house and the roar that followed the final notes shook Heaven’s floor.
In some ways, this moment taps some of the power and glory of Stevie Ray Vaughan, but also just as importantly, his warts-and-all humanity and its catalyst to examine and live our own lives with the same fortitude and honesty. We are stronger than the weakest parts of us, and Stevie Ray knew that. We are the blessed ones for the gifts, insights and music he shared. (Dennis Cook)
We begin appropriately enough with a searing version of “Life Without You.” As he sings: “The angels have waited for so long, now they have their way.”
This’ll turn your fleece white as snow!
This is a LOT of guitar firepower on one stage – Stevie Ray, Jimmie Vaughan and Jeff Beck with singer Angela Stehli in rare Honolulu performance.
One of Stevie Ray’s longtime songwriting foils was Doyle Bramhall, who was also a running partner of ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons & Dusty Hill as a teen. This is one of better Vaughan/Bramhall compositions off In Step, Stevie Ray’s last studio release with Double Trouble before his death.
This triple threat of Vaughan, B.B. King and Albert Collins doing damage to this signature blues was captured at Jazz Fest in 1988.
So synonymous with electric guitar was Vaughan that it came as a surprise to some that he absolutely killed on acoustic in what is arguably the finest installment of MTV Unplugged next to the iconic Nirvana performance.
Hands down, one of the finest slow blues ever, and this version adds fellow Texas bluesman Johnny Copeland for extra spice.
Tough as ever, this one was especially refreshing on the MTV of 1985.
This one always kicked like a mule, and this take from the Loreley Rockpalast Festival, Germany in 1984 is no exception.
Many try to pull on Hendrix’s velvet trousers, so to speak, but few have done so with as much authority and authenticity as Stevie Ray. Here’s a double shot of SRV doing Jimi. Catch the little bit of “Third Stone from the Sun” he throws in to “Little Wing.”
We end upbeat, hopeful that wherever SRV is now that the house is shakin’ real good every night.
