Google Helps Finance Latest Trans-Pacific Fiber Optic Cable Project

Laying fiber optic data transmission cable across the Pacific Ocean is a costly and risky operation. Not just any company with a seaworthy ship can hope to undertake this sort of operation. It takes specialized ships and companies that have developed the expertise to do it right. PacNet, the largest submarine cable operator in the Far East, and SubCom (formerly Tyco Telecommunications) recently completed the latest trans-Pacific cable deployment project using the Global Sentinel, a 19-year-old purpose-built ship. In March 2010, Global Sentinel was docked on the San Francisco waterfront after spending nine months at sea completing the last phase of the two-year project that will connect overseas data networks and deliver the voice, data, graphics, video and database information needed to serve cities and enterprises along the Pacific Rim.

Air Announce First N. American Shows In 3 Years

AIR ANNOUNCE NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES IN SUPPORT OF LOVE 2 ALBUM
FIRST CONTINENTAL APPEARANCE IN THREE YEARS

AIR

Following the October release of their fifth studio album Love 2, French electronic pop duo AIR (Nicolas Godin and JB Dunckel) return to the U.S. for their first live shows in three years. The Pocket Symphony tour of 2007-08 saw the band travel to the Far East and beyond, stage their largest New York play to date at the Madison Square Garden Theatre, and establish themselves as truly international artists.

Now in 2010, AIR is preparing for the first of several U.S. trips, the first of which will be a traditional tour showcasing the breadth of their catalog and re-interpretations of new songs from the Love 2 album. For the first time on these dates, the band will be performing their live show as an intimate three-piece with Godin and Dunckel taking on full instrumental and vocal duties. This follows a successful short tour of China and the Far East in late 2008, where they experimented with a core of three musicians and the current live set took shape.

For the North American dates, AIR will be joined by British drummer/percussionist Alex Thomas (Bat For Lashes, Badly Drawn Boy), and guest opening act will be AM, a revered multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles with a flare for distilling global music influences into his own unique and infectious pop confections.

AIR’s 1998 debut album Moon Safari struck a unanimously harmonious chord with music lovers around the globe and has since become an electronic pop classic. Since then AIR has enjoyed many career-defining moments, including the now legendary sold out show with a full orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl in 2004. The band has also garnered many accolades, both at home and abroad, and have written, produced, and collaborated on a breathtaking array of music projects.

With 5.5 million worldwide album sales to their credit, the band has become de facto ambassadors of modern French pop, whose fans are drawn back to each new musical adventure by their inventive arrangements, and a playful yet unpredictable palette of sounds and song craft.

Prior to their North American journey, AIR will set out on a European tour in early 2010 starting at the legendary Casino de Paris in their hometown and ending at the legendary Roundhouse in London on February 26.

Grenade found outside home of Kenny Dalglish

Explosive device found on garden wall as police investigate unconnected vendetta against security boss

Police investigating a vendetta against a security boss discovered a live hand grenade outside the home of former Liverpool player and manager Kenny Dalglish, it emerged today.

The explosive device was found on a garden wall near his home in Southport on Sunday night as police made searches unconnected to the former footballer. The army’s bomb disposal unit, who were called to the scene, cordoned off the street for the public’s safety.

John Ball, a security company boss, whose home has been shot at and whose business premises have been firebombed this year as gangsters unsuccessfully tried to extort money from him and his business partner Terry Riley, reportedly called police after spotting two armed men.

The men were said to have fled in a silver Lexus, which was abandoned nearby. Two men were arrested after a police helicopter was used in the search. They are being questioned on suspicion of witness intimidation.

The army bomb disposal unit were called out to make the device safe and the area was cordoned off.

A Merseyside police spokeswoman said: “The device was removed and made safe and is currently undergoing forensic examination. The road remains cordoned off at its junction with Sandringham Road and high-visibility patrols have been stepped up in the area to reassure the public.

“Detectives believe this incident is linked to a series of other recent incidents in this area and not to the owner of the property where the device was found.”

Kenny Dalglish was returning to the UK today after attending the club’s tour of the Far East. It was announced earlier this month that he had resumed his Anfield career with a senior role at Liverpool’s Academy.

Last month, the Cabbage Inn in Netherton, Merseyside, was firebombed just after 3.15am, forcing the landlady and her partner to flee for their lives. Detectives confirmed the pub attack had been another incident in a long line of attacks against entrepreneurs Riley and Ball.

Ball’s home in Birkdale, Southport, had been shot at in a drive-by shooting twice in a year. He was out at the time, but his wife and children were in bed as up to five shots were fired. Numerous addresses linked to Ball and his business partner Riley have been firebombed and shot at as local gangsters attempt to extort money from the pair.

During one of the shootings at Riley’s home, an unexploded petrol bomb was also found next to a four-wheel drive vehicle parked on the driveway.

The Shorrocks Hill Country Club, in Formby, which had been owned by John Ball and is now owned by Riley, was petrol-bombed in early April.

Since May, Riley’s parents, sister and in-laws have been targeted at their homes. As Riley was driving along Southport’s coastal road, two men on a motorbike sped past him, waving a gun. At the time, police raided a number of addresses and questioned five people, who were bailed.

Adebayor was ‘desperate’ not to join

• Ferguson says Adebayor offered himself to Manchester United
• ‘[City] are a small club with a small mentality,’ adds Scot

Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed that Manchester City’s latest signing Emmanuel Adebayor was “desperate” to join Manchester United or Chelsea instead, and contacted both clubs even after he had agreed his £25m move to Eastlands.

Speaking to The Observer, the Manchester United manager – who also dismissed City as “a small club with a small mentality” – said the striker tried to engineer an alternative move away from Arsenal even as the transfer to City was being finalised.

“At the last minute, from what I can gather, either Emmanuel Adebayor or his agent phoned us after they had agreed a deal with City and then did the same with Chelsea. He was desperate to get to either Chelsea or us.”

Ferguson, speaking in Malaysia during United’s pre-season tour of the Far East, claimed that Adebayor’s move, and those of other high-profile players who have joined City this summer, was motivated by money, not ambition: “When someone offers you that kind of money, it’s a big attraction to people nowadays. That is the reason they have gone there.”

The 25-year-old said that “silverware and trophies” were behind his decision to join Mark Hughes’s side, but Ferguson does not think City will challenge, saying signing the likes of Adebayor, Roque Santa Cruz and Gareth Barry may be the sum total of their success this season.

“Do you know what City’s biggest triumph is? It’s getting those players there. I don’t know if they will do anything with them,” he said. “It is not easy to get into that top four so the biggest success of all is to just get the players there.

“There will be three teams to beat. Ourselves, Liverpool and Chelsea will be very close together… The one who has the challenge this season is Arsène. He doesn’t have the money and how he uses the £25m from Adebayor will be very, very interesting,” he said of the Arsenal manager.

Continuing his attack on City, Ferguson also suggested that Hughes has focused too much on attack in his spending spree.

“For all the buying they have done, they still have to pick a team with balance. That won’t be easy for Mark. What’s he got, 10 strikers? So if he picks a squad to go to Chelsea he has to leave seven behind, or five at least.”

One of those strikers is Carlos Tevez, whose move to the blue half of Manchester prompted City to erect a billboard sporting an image of the Argentinian with the message “Welcome to Manchester” – a stunt Ferguson dismissed as typical of the club’s mentality.

“It’s City isn’t it? They are a small club with a small mentality,” he said. “All they can talk about is Manchester United, they can’t get away from it… They think taking Carlos Tevez away from Manchester United is a triumph. It is poor stuff.”

Indian tiger park admits it has no tigers

By Faisal Mohammad Ali
BBC News, Bhopal

Royal Bengal Tiger

One of India’s main tiger parks – Panna National Park – has admitted it no longer has any tigers.

The park, in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, was part of the country’s efforts to save the famous Royal Bengal Tiger from extinction.

State Minister of Forests Rajendra Shukla said that the reserve, which three years ago had 24 tigers, no longer had any.

A special census was conducted in the park by a premier wildlife institute, after the forest authorities reported no sightings of the animals for a long time.

This is the second tiger reserve in India, after Sariska in Rajasthan, where numbers have dwindled to zero.

Warning bells

Officials from the wildlife department say there is no "explicable" reason for the falling number of tigers.

But a report prepared by the central forest ministry says Panna cannot be compared with Sariska because "warning bells were sounded regularly for the last eight years".

Map

The report says wildlife authorities failed to see the impending disaster despite repeated warnings, and lost most of Panna’s big cats to poaching.

While this controversy rages, there have been reports that another national park in Madhya Pradesh, Sanjay National Park, which was included in the tiger project three years ago, also has no tigers left.

The park had a population of 15 tigers until the late 1990s.

Of the more than 1,400 tigers in the country, 300 dwell in the state of Madhya Pradesh, which is also called the "tiger state of India".

Best managed

But Madhya Pradesh’s forest minister Rajendra Shukla says all the news is not bleak.

"Panna is our only park which has lost on this count," he says. "Three of state’s reserve forests – Kanha, Bandhavgarh and Pench – have been adjudged among the best managed tiger reserves in the country."

Mr Shukla has drawn up a seven-member committee comprising the state’s chief conservator of forests and experts, to ascertain why the tigers have disappeared.

Indian officials carry out a tiger census in Mahanada Wildlife Sanctuary in December 2008

The chief conservator, HS Pabla, told the BBC that the report would be submitted some time in August.

He said that tigers from Sanjay National Park "could have strayed to the adjoining area, which is now part of the state of Chattisgarh, created some years ago."

The authorities have recently transported two female tigers to Panna from another nearby tiger park, and sought permission from the central administration to bring in four more, two of them males.

Project tiger

India had 40,000 tigers a century ago, but the numbers dwindled fast because of hunting and poaching.

The country banned tiger hunting and launched an ambitious conservation effort named Project Tiger to increase the population of the endangered species.

A number of forest areas were declared national parks and funds allotted for protecting the tigers.

Though the programme bore fruit initially, with the decline in numbers checked because of a hunting ban, recent years have seen a phenomenal rise in poaching, which is now organised almost along the lines of drug-smuggling.

The authorities have not been able to put a stop to it, owing to the ever-changing techniques used by the cartels, and corruption within.

MK Ranjitsingh, a member of National Wildlife Advisory Board, says the authorities must crack down on the poachers by preventing their activities in the parks, and stopping the export of tiger products.

And they must, he adds, lobby for international pressure on the nations of the Far East, which are the main buyers of such goods.

There have been reports that there is a huge demand for tiger bones, claws and skin in countries like China, Taiwan and Korea.</p
