Nov 24: Mewah, Tiger Air, Ziwo, AIMS AMP

Singapore shares may see a weak start on Wednesday as rising tensions on the Korean peninsula are likely to keep investors away from riskier assets. Singapore’s benchmark Straits Times Index <.FTSTI> fell 2.03% on Tuesday to 3,126.30 points.

Shares of palm oil refiner Mewah International (MEWI.SI) are likely to be in focus as it makes its Singapore market debut. It sold 251.7 million shares at $1.10 each, which was about 1.9 times subscribed, the firm said in a statement.

Philippines budget carrier South East Asian Airlines (SEAIR) will operate flights using aircraft leased from Tiger Airways (TAHL.SI), both firms said in a joint statement. SEAIR’s flights will be marketed through Tiger Airway’s  online booking website.

Ziwo Holdings (ZIWO.SI), which makes rubber foam materials, said it has received approval from Taiwan’s central bank and the Singapore stock exchange to issue Taiwan depository receipts representing up to 89 million shares on the Taiwan stock exchange.

AIMS AMP Capital (AART.SI), which owns logistics properties, has signed three long term leases with a unit of a German telecom firm, and achieved full occupancy at one of its properties, bringing the total occupancy of its portfolio to 98%.

China Environmental Resources Group’s auditor has qualified its opinion on the company’s accounts because issues including garment-unit transactions and taxes, the company said. Tiger Air +1.6%; Oct data pretty strong: Analyst

Tiger Airways (J7X.SG) +1.6% at $1.89, after posting 8.0% on-year rise in passenger volume in October to 455,000, load factor +1 percentage point on-year to 87%, though sequentially volume down 1.9%, while load factor steady, according to Dow Jones.

Analyst at local brokerage says, slight monthly drop in volume largely due to seasonality, while overall “it’s a pretty strong set of numbers.” Adds, management guided forward bookings remain strong. For 12-months to end-October, passengers +39% on-year at 5.6 million, average load factor at 86%, +3 ppts on year.

Stock down 14.3% from late-September peak-to-yesterday amid flight cancellations due to technical problems. Bihar’s pro-business reforms: Paper tiger

There is more talk about reform than action in India’s poorest state

IT IS surely no coincidence that Bihar, besides being India’s poorest state, has also been its least inviting for entrepreneurs. That is supposed to be changing. Nitish Kumar, Bihar’s chief minister, has spent his five years in office fixing the roads and other infrastructure. Crime has fallen, so the bright and wealthy are no longer frightened off by the threat of kidnapping, extortion and murder. Stability has allowed local trade to flourish. A state official reels off an impressive-sounding list of 398 approved investment proposals—from sugar mills to power plants—worth $4.8 billion. That all sounds rosy, until you look for success on the ground. India’s tycoons have visited, and left. There is not one example of a big industrial investment to show for it.

Perhaps local officials are failing to spot the brightest entrepreneurs—those deft enough to avoid the bureaucrats. Take the case of Husk Power Systems, formed in 2007 by three young Biharis and an American friend. It runs 50 micro power plants in rural areas fired by burning otherwise useless rice husks. Now employing more than 250 people, the firm sells cheap electricity to 200,000 rural folk, who previously relied on kerosene lamps or candles. …
