Small caps are the most active in Singapore trade, with low-priced plays in favor amid a general lack of newsflow to guide investors.
Broad market direction is generally up, with just under 2 gainers for every decliner.
FTSE ST Catalist Index +1.7%, FTSE ST Small Cap Index +0.4% vs STI +0.1% at 3,207.16. UOB KayHian says while STI’s technical picture is looking better, “we would like to see the index break above the resistance of 3218 before putting our chips on the table.”

STI down 0.2% at 3,246.58, off intraday 3,230 low, which unlikely to be tested again today, with market breadth improving tad to 2.3 decliners per gainer vs almost 3 to 1 at break; 1.11 billion shares traded worth $1.04 billion, according to Dow Jones.
Index likely to remain underwater rest of session as HK, China markets also consolidating with negative bias.

Ezion +4.4%; 58% 3-year earnings CAGR tipped: DMG
Ezion Holdings (5ME.SG) +4.4% at $0.715 in active trade as investors take advantage of slight pullback in last few sessions to accumulate, says Dow Jones.
“Ezion is our top pick in the small- and mid-cap offshore and marine space, as we expect it to deliver the highest earnings growth among its peers,” says DMG research head Terence Wong; tips 58% 3-year CAGR from FY10.

STI +0.2% at 2,926.76, expected to stay above 2,900, with resistance at 2,969 (Aug 11 high). “We expect shares to trade within a narrow band for the rest of today due to a lack of market direction and mixed US futures,” CIMB says.
Market breadth still slightly negative; volume modest at under 1 billion shares vs 1.5 billion yesterday. Commodity firms among gainers; Wilmar International (F34.SG) +2.1% at $6.26 on hopes of increased fund inflows as plantation group’s weighting in MSCI Singapore Index raised to 5.33% from 3.62%, Golden Agri-Resources (E5H.SG) +0.9% at $0.58.

Asian container shipping tipped to slow down in 4Q by Deutsche Bank
Despite raising 2010 earnings forecasts significantly on Asian container shipping sector, Deutsche Bank turns cautious going into 2H10, according to Dow Jones.
Deutsche Bank says industry recovery surprised on upside, expects decent 2Q profits, early signs suggest 3Q will be even better, but notes channel checks point to 4Q industry slowdown, increasing supply presents sector headwinds in 2011.
The research house also forecasts supply growth to accelerate from 2010’s 9.4% to 10.3% in 2011, outpacing house’s demand growth forecast of 9.4%.
SIA’s 1Q net profit tipped at $236m
Singapore Airlines (C6L.SG) likely to swing to a fiscal 1Q net profit of S$236 after S$307 million net loss same period last year, as global economic recovery boosts leisure, business travel and increased cargo movement, a Dow Jones poll shows.
“Both passenger and cargo traffic saw strong demand and tight capacity in 1Q FY11. We forecast passenger and cargo revenue to increase by 22.7% y-o-y and 48.4% y-o-y, respectively,” Daiwa Securities says.
Results due after market close. Stock last +0.1% at $14.80.
