Singapore retail sales excluding vehicles rise on jobs, tourism
The index measuring purchases excluding automobiles climbed 6% from a year earlier, after gaining a revised 4.8% in June, the Statistics Department said today. Including vehicles, which are sold subject to government caps, total retail sales fell 1.2%, less than the median forecast for a 2.7% decline in a Bloomberg News survey of seven economists.
Genting up on strong earnings, tourism glow
Shares of casino operator Genting Singapore rose as much as 6.2% in early trade on Monday on the firm’s strong quarterly earnings and investor bullishness about the tourism sector.
Nearly 109 million shares had changed hands and the stock was trading at $1.55 by 10:20 a.m.
“It follows through from the result. The Singapore casino market may be larger than expected, and it might actually catch up with Las Vegas in a few years,” said a trader at a local brokerage.

Morgan Stanley says recently released May tourist arrival data for Singapore, Thailand “further corroborate a diverging sort of trend that is becoming evident in the tourism sector in these two Asean countries”, according to Dow Jones.
Morgan Stanley notes May arrivals for Singapore rose robust 30.3% on year (vs +20.5% on year in April) — second-highest growth rate in Asia ex-Japan — Thailand arrivals fell 13% on year (vs April’s +2% on year), sharpest decline in AXJ.

Singapore Tourism Chief ‘quite excited’ about visitor spending
Singapore is set to boost visitor numbers by as much as 30% this year, as the integrated resorts attract tourists, she said. The Tourism Board expects to attract as many as 12.5 million visitors this year. Tourism receipts may rise as much as 50%, boosted by spending by Indonesian and Russian visitors, Aw said.

Singapore-listed tourism-related stocks mixed as investors avoid companies with exposure to Thailand, zoom in on laggards, according to Dow Jones.
Banyan Tree (B58.SG), which returned to profitability in 4Q09 on tourism rebound after losses in 2Q09-3Q09, down 2.7% at $0.73.
Singapore’s 2009 tourist arrival down 4.3% y-o-y
The number of visitors to Singapore fell by 4.3% last year to 9.7 million, driving the revenue from the sector down 19.2% to $12.4 billion, the country’s tourism promotion agency said today.
Singapore Tourism Board CEO Aw Kah Peng told a news conference the agency would disclose its forecast for tourist arrival and revenues for 2010 next month.
