Tours and Triomphe

Is the Tour de France getting easier?

THE 97th Tour de France finishes on Sunday July 25th in Paris after 3,642km (2,263 miles) of cycling over 21 gruelling days. Although this year’s route is regarded by many as particularly tough, it could be considered a mere jaunt through the sunflowers compared to earlier Tours. When the first race was staged in 1903 riders cycled 2,428km over six stages. But distances rapidly climbed to reach a peak of 5,745km in 1926, with the winner completing the race in 238 hours and 44 minutes at an average speed of 24.3km/h. Since then the length of the Tour has fallen steadily but the average speed of the winner has risen to around 40km/h.

Slayer and Megadeth To Play Classic Albums on Carnage Tours

A HEAVY TIME TRIP BACK TO 1990

Megadeth

Megadeth and Slayer, who last toured the U.S. together nineteen years ago on the “Clash of the Titans” tour, have confirmed that they will each perform, start to finish, their 1990 releases – Slayer’s Seasons In The Abyss and Megadeth’s Rust In Peace – on the upcoming Canadian and American Carnage Tours. The six-date Canadian Carnage kicks off July 23 in Quebec City, while the 19-city American Carnage dates begin August 11 in Glens Falls, NY. With Slayer and Megadeth co-headlining, Testament will be special guest on all dates.

The American Carnage Tour, originally scheduled to take place in January and February, had to be postponed due to Slayer’s vocalist/bassist, Tom Araya’s treatment for severe back pain, an occupational hazard for the rocker who is known for aggressively swinging his long mane of hair while performing. A surgical procedure in January corrected the problem once and for all, and he felt better almost immediately.

“Right after the surgery, ” said Araya, “I could tell that the issue was fixed. There’s no more pain; it just feels really good. I’m really excited and I’m anxious to get together with the rest of the guys and start rehearsing again. We cancelled two tours, and I don’t feel great about that, but I couldn’t deal with the pain anymore, and that’s now completely gone. I know the fans are excited to see the band – the tour is on, we’re keeping our word, there will be no more cancellations.”

“If you missed us playing with our friends Slayer back in the 90s, well, here’s your chance to make it up to yourself,” says Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine. “If you miss it this time, well then you ain’t metal anyway!”

Apple Issues iPad Video Tours Before April 3 Release

Apple has posted a series of Guided Tours videos for its iPad tablet PC on its official Website. Heavily reminiscent of Apples 30-second television spots for the device, the videos suggest that Apple wants to familiarize potential purchasers with the iPad’s functions and abilities, which may perhaps be unfamiliar to a population unused to multitouch tablet PCs. A leaked video, purportedly of the iPad App Store in action, shows an interface virtually akin to the existing App Store, with iPad applications selling for anywhere from Free to $49.99. Analysts have estimated that Apple sold nearly 120,000 iPads on the devices first day of preorder availability.

Leonard Cohen Reschedules Europe Dates Due to Injury

Leonard Cohen Reschedules European Performances Due To Injury

Leonard Cohen

AEG Worldwide has announced that a run of performances by Leonard Cohen have been rescheduled to allow proper time for a sports-related injury sustained by the artist to heal.

While exercising recently, Mr. Cohen suffered a compression injury in his lower back. He has been advised by physicians to follow the typical four to six month regime of physical therapy prescribed for athletes with similar injuries.

“Doctors have confirmed that Mr. Cohen is otherwise in terrific shape, thanks to years of exercise and careful diet, and simply needs appropriate time to recover from the lower back injury,” stated Cohen’s manager, Robert Kory.

Since his return to the stage in May 2008, Mr. Cohen has played 191 sold out shows around the world, headlined the 2009 Coachella Music Festival and was hailed by Spin Magazine as the “Comeback of the Year” for 2009.

On January 30, Mr. Cohen received the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Special Merit Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS) and was honored the following night on the Grammy Awards broadcast.

ALO New Album on 2/9 West Coast Dates Announced

ALO REVEALS MAN OF THE WORLD ON FEBRUARY 9 AND TOURS THE WEST COAST

New Album From Brushfire Records Produced By Jack Johnson

ALO

On February 9, 2010 Brushfire Recording Artist ALO will release Man of the World. The 11-song collection captures the sound of ALO flexing their considerable creative powers to craft their finest album yet and is the sound of four players who have truly found their groove together. On Man of the World, the band strips down to their most organic and pure to create a tight, cohesive and energetic album.

Man of the World was engineered by the band’s frequent studio partner Dave Simon-Baker and produced by musical collaborator and longtime friend, Jack Johnson. “Jack functioned like a fifth member of the band,” says keyboardist Zach Gill. “At times, Jack was involved in everything from lyric writing to tambourine playing.” Adds Dan Lebowitz, ALO’s guitarist, “Most of us in the band have been playing together since we were 13 and over the years we’ve fallen into patterns. Jack shook things up in a really great way and got us to rethink how we record our music.”

For Man of the World, the band abandoned the traditional studio recording approach to build songs up track by track. ALO went for a raw, more organic route, recording as a group and letting their instruments bleed into each other. “I’ve always felt that you can hear the difference in recordings made this way,” says Gill. “You actually get to hear the sound of people in a room making something together.” Recording at Jack’s studio on the North Shore of Oahu in Hawaii also lent to the natural feel of the album. “Hawaii feels very pure and laid-back,” recalls drummer Dave Brogan, “it’s an easy place to get centered and feel inspired.”

Songs that sprang out of the band’s new recording approach span the sonic spectrum in classic ALO fashion. The album’s lead track “Suspended,” was recorded live in one take and exemplifies the musical freedom of the project. “Recording it was like an exhale” says Gill of the seven-minute anthem. Adds bassist Steve Adams, “on the last note we all looked up and smiled knowing we’d just recorded something very cool and special.” The album also features “Big Appetite,” a warm-hearted track with a probing message centered around a slow-burning groove and pedal steel accents, and “Man of the World,” a raw and simple rock ‘n’ roll stomp. “I Love Music,” already well loved by live audiences, and “Time and Heat,” which is considered a rare cult favorite, are included as well.

ALO thrives in the live environment and can’t wait to get out on the road to share the tracks from Man of the World with old and new fans. “We are the eternal tinkerers,” reflects Lebo. “There is no way that these songs will stay the same for long.” West coast fans will have the first opportunity to see the new songs live when ALO rings in the New Year in Oakland, CA with Brett Dennen and SambaDa. Continuing in the holiday spirit of giving, ALO will be setting out on their fourth annual Tour d’Amour on February 10-21. A portion of proceeds from the Tour d’Amour will be donated to Bay Area-based Music in Schools Today, a non-profit organization that supports music education for over 10,000 youth annually. ALO then joins Galactic for select dates through the end of the month.

1142: pigeons in the park on 606:"Here’s to Last Day madness and some final Cav glory!"

Bradley Wiggins

1137: I’m not forgetting Bradley Wiggins in all of this by the way.

He has had an unforgettable Tour and, despite missing out on a podium place in Paris, to finish fourth and equal Robert Millar’s best finish for a British rider from 1984 is an incredible achievement. When Contador and co break open the champagne on the way into the French capital, as is the norm, Wiggo deserves to take a big swig for himself. He has proven himself to be a genuine contender for future Tours.

1135: It’s a big ask – all Thor realistically needs to do is stay on Cav’s shoulder all day and, assuming neither of them contest those intermediate sprints, then, even if Cav does win the stage, place in the first 15 will bring enough points keep Thor in green. Personally, I’d settle for a stage win for Cav, the green jersey can wait!

Green jersey

1132: Cav, the Manx Missile, has already won more stages this year than last – five to four – and is set to finish his first Tour. You also might have heard him talking about victory in Paris since before the race began three weeks ago, not much though…he’s not said a lot during the Tour!

There is also a slim chance he could achieve his other aim of this year’s Tour and snatch the green points jersey from Thor Hushovd. The Norwegian leads the Manxman by 25 points – there are 35 up for grabs for the stage winner, and up to another 12 from the two intermediate sprints on the second and fourth laps of the Champs Elysees. Can he do it

Text in your views on 81111

1130: From Richard, via text on 81111: "Morning Mr Bevan. The last three weeks have been great, thanks for the coverage and entertainment from you and all contributors. And every hero prepared to take on Le Tour."

I echo what Richard is saying here – thanks to all you texters and everyone on 606 – you know who you are. This Tour wouldn’t have been the same without you.

1127: Today’s stage begins in Montereau Fault Yonne and will begin as a victory parade into Paris for Contador, the man in yellow, who will be joined on the podium by Andy Schleck and seven-time champion Lance Armstrong.

Only when the Eiffel Tower is in sight, and the riders begin the first of eight laps on the cobbles of the Champs Elysees, will the race for the line begin.

Mark Cavendish

Yellow jersey

1123:Yep, we already know that, barring disaster, the formidable Alberto Contador will be crowned this year’s Tour de France winner – and rightly so after a superb display in the mountains and time trials. He is the King.

But can the Isle of Man’s Prince of Sprints Mark Cavendish sign off with his sixth stage win of this year’s race I certainly hope so.

1120 BST: It began in Monaco 22 days ago as the Tour de Lance. Will it finish in Paris today as the Tour de Manx<br/
