Google Touts Android 3.0 ‘Honeycomb’ Holographic UI Redesign for Tablets

Google Jan. 26 trotted out a key piece of its Android 3.0 "Honeycomb" puzzle in the form of a preview SDK based on the new operating system intended for larger touch-screen tablet computers. Honeycomb offers users a new holographic user interface that focuses on multitasking, notifications, widgets and other features to make devices easy and fun to use. Google Maps in 3D is a big draw for this platform, which Google programmers like to boast has been redesigned from the ground up. To show off the OS, Google is also offering media and analysts a special demonstration at the Googleplex in Mountain View, Calif., Feb. 2. Those attending will see Honeycomb running on plenty of Motorola Xoom tablets and perhaps some others as hardware makers rush to polish their products and get them out the door to compete with Apple’s iPad. Google’s Android team also offered a sneak peek at what the Honeycomb user interface and other tools will look like on the Android developer Website. Intel demonstrated its tiny 310 series solid state drive at the Storage Visions show Jan. 5 in Las Vegas. The 310 unit is capable of performing as well as the Intel X25 SSD drive and is designed for use in tablets, notebooks, and embedded applications. – Intel claims its latest solid state drive is capable of

HP Labs Touts Gloe Location App for Android, BlackBerry

Hewlett-Packard’s Social Computing Lab is working on Gloe, an application that lets users search for, tag and bookmark pages that are relevant to their location. Gloe is available as a mobile app for Android and BlackBerry smartphones and as a cloud-based app, drawing on tagged Web content from Google, Wikipedia, Yelp and other sources. Google Touts New Chrome Browser 5.0 as Fastest Ever

Google’s Chrome team gave the beta of the new Chrome 5.0 a sort of rocket fuel injection, boosting the browser’s speed to gains of up to 35 percent over the previous channel release. Chrome 5.0 also boasts new user interface features for Windows, Mac and Linux computers, including browser preference sync. There are some not-so-noticeable utilities based on HTML5 in Chrome 5.0, including geolocation APIs, App Cache, Web sockets and file drag-and-drop capabilities. Chrome may not have anywhere near the market share of Windows Internet Explorer yet, but it is making a dent at nearly 7 percent.
