Singapore will defer its mid-year review of bus and subway train fares till the fourth quarter of the year, delaying what will likely have resulted in higher cost of public transport, the Straits Times newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Singapore’s public transport fare review mechanism takes into account inflation and average wage changes in the preceding year, meaning operators SMRT (SMRT.SI) and ComfortDelgro (CMDG.SI) would have gotten the greenlight to raise fares at the next review.

A Franco-German train tiff: Ils ne passeront pas

Trains under the Channel cause a storm

ON DECEMBER 7th 1835 the Adler, a steam engine built by a British father and son, George and Robert Stephenson, puffed its way between Nuremberg and Furth in Bavaria, marking the birth of the German railway system. On October 19th, a century and three-quarters later, the Germans repaid the compliment. Deutsche Bahn’s sleek high-speed train, the ICE 3, slid into London’s St Pancras station, the first German train to pass through the Channel tunnel, which links Britain to continental Europe.

By happenstance the event coincided with a royal row brewing between the French and, it seems, almost everyone else keen on liberalising rail travel through the tunnel. Barely a mile away, as the Germans celebrated, Alstom, a French company, sought an injunction from Britain’s High Court against the award of a contract to its German rival Siemens, one of the makers of the ICE 3. …

High-speed rail in Europe: Trouble ahead

The train giants of France and Germany are at war over European high-speed rail

AT THE Gare de l’Est in Paris, Franco-German co-operation seems on track. Deutsche Bahn inter-city express (ICE) trains glide in from Frankfurt and SNCF sends trains deep into Germany, thanks to a joint venture between the two firms. Every train has a French and a German controller on board. Despite wrangling over details—French unions, for instance, refused to let their head conductors serve meals to first-class passengers, so the Germans have to do it all—they get along well. “When we’re on the same train, we’re a team,” says Marine Dubois, the French controlleur on the 13.09 ICE to Frankfurt.

The joint venture between Deutsche Bahn and SNCF, the German and French rail giants, was launched in 2007 amid high hopes. Boosters predicted an open European market where trains and passengers would cross borders without fuss. But old national rivalries are resurfacing. Relations at the top have turned nasty. The joint venture could even be at risk. …
