Google Goggles Gets Text Translation for World Travelers

Google May 6 added text translation to the new Version 1.1 of its Google Goggles application, allowing travelers to other countries to take pictures of text and read them in their native language. Goggles can now read English, French, Italian, German and Spanish and translate to many more languages. Google plans to bring recognition capabilities to other Latin-based languages and eventually read non-Latin languages such as Chinese, Hindi and Arabic, the company said.

Facebook Releases Website Translation Tool to Developers

Facebook took its Translations application and made it available free to developers. Facebook is extending an olive branch to the 15,000 Websites or apps that work with Facebook Connect. Facebook regularly offers new features for end users, which number more than 300 million and comprise the lifeblood of the social network. But Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is a programmer himself and so it makes sense that his developer team has been increasingly getting cozier with programmers that want to write social applications.
