Singapore Air boosts second-half capacity 5% as travel rebounds

Singapore Airlines., the world’s second-largest carrier by market value, said it would increase capacity 5% in the fiscal second half as business travelers and holidaymakers reserve more flights.
 
“Advance bookings for the coming months indicate that demand is holding up,” the carrier said in the statement today. The airline also reported second-quarter profit of $380 million, surpassing analysts’ estimates.

Singapore Air profit tops estimates on travel rebound

Singapore Airlines, the world’s second-largest carrier by market value, posted better-than- expected quarterly profit as the rebounding global economy revived air-travel demand.

Net income was $380 million in the three months ended September, compared with a loss of $159 million, a year earlier, the carrier said in a statement today. That surpassed the $366 million average of seven analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Second-quarter revenue increased 18% to $3.6 billion.

Malaysia is considering a high- speed rail link from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, cutting the travel time between the two Southeast Asian cities to less than two hours, according to the government’s Performance Management and Delivery Unit, or Pemandu.
 
This would be a private sector initiative with travel speeds in excess of 250 kilometers an hour, Pemandu deputy laboratory leader Ahmad Suhaimi Ismail said in an interview in Kuala Lumpur today, without naming any companies that may be involved.
