Tablets, Smartphones Fuel 10 Technology Trends for 2011: Deloitte

Consultancy Deloitte Jan. 18 celebrated the tenth anniversary of its predictions, which it launched in 2001 with 10 predictions about mobile telephony. The forecast has evolved to cover technology, telecommunications and media. Deloitte employs 10,000 services professionals who have their fingers on the pulse of these sectors. These pros whip up a list of trends they see for each New Year. Then, Deloitte taps its so-called "second network" of clients, who are interviewed by the service pros for insights into the top trends. The trends share a common theme, which the consultancy characterizes as such: "Deloitte sees a 2011 where consumers and enterprises will be dealing with diversity in hardware-computing platforms, in software operating systems and in wireless-network access." Another way to put it is that the influx of WiFi and 3G-powered smartphones such as Apple’s iPhone and Google Android handsets, as well as tablet computers such as Apple’s iPad and its litany of Android-based counterparts flooding the market, are presenting IT managers with more choices and more management challenges. For example, CIOs must be wary of when and how to allow these machines to tap into cloud-computing services. That’s the chief theme in the enterprise that eWEEK sees for 2011. eWEEK spotlights 10 of Deloitte’s trends in this slideshow. – …

10 Hot Global Trends IT Pros Need to Know

Project management is becoming more accepted as a discipline, according to ESI International, a project management training firm. Project management plays a critical role in organizations, whether its developing new products and services, or ensuring day-to-day operations run smoothly. Project managers may work with local or remote teams, or in many cases, virtual teams, with people from several different groups working together for a single project. For organizations, talented and effective project managers are a competitive advantage and that will continue to be the case in 2011, according to J LeRoy Ward, the executive vice-president of ESI. “Savvy business leaders” have to consider talent management and organization-specific requirements in order to keep talented managers, especially as the number of career-growth opportunities increase. A panel of consultant and senior executives from ESI collaborated on a list of key trends managers, directors, and senior executives should consider when reviewing the project management environment within their organization. 2011 will show an increase in formalizing and codifying job roles and authority for project managers, while giving them the tools to manage complex projects. The focus will be on communication, negotiation, and making changes within the organization to support the project. – …

Assif Shameen: Predicting trends by following Roubini

REMEMBER NOURIEL ROUBINI? The New York University economist was the lone voice six years ago on financial-news shows warning of a huge US real estate bubble that would burst so badly that it could shake the very foundations of the global financial system. Those days, of course, he was invited to business talk shows as some sort of comic relief, while investment banks pushed an array of mortgage-linked instruments as a sure way to riches. Hacks made fun of “his downbeat message, combined with an accent reminiscent of a James Bond villain”. Despite more dire warnings from mainstream economists who quietly joined Roubini’s cries of wolf, the US housing bubble just kept burgeoning.

12 Important E-Discovery Trends for 2011 and Beyond

Until only a few years ago, document discovery for litigation purposes was the domain of lawyers, law clerks, judges and other non-IT folks. Not anymore. Since the advent of search engines for word documents, email, spreadsheets, messaging threads, photos, logs, videos and a score of other file formats, IT has been intimately involved in rounding up evidence for legal cases. As the sheer amount of business information continues to multiply in storage arrays& whether they are on or off-premises& it has become more difficult for legal teams to find all the documents they need to prosecute or defend a case. Thus, the e-discovery field has burgeoned with new ideas and products that: a) find the correct information; b) find it within a reasonable amount of time; and c) cut the often staggering costs of having expensive legal teams sift through files one by one. In this slideshow, eWEEK, with the assistance of ZL Technologies of San Jose, Calif., offers a list of its top e-discovery trends for 2011 and beyond.   – …

Symantec’s Storage Trends for 2011: Virtualization Remains King

Virtualization has been one of the biggest IT efficiency trends during the last couple of years. And this movement will become even more significant in 2011. Companies of all sizes are benefiting with virtualization by reducing the number of servers in their environments to gain significant reductions in power consumption, carbon dioxide production and physical footprint. While virtualization decreases server costs and improves ROI, enterprises also are realizing that virtualization increases management attention& and indirectly, costs& due to the new complexity it introduces. While many companies believe the information and applications within their virtual infrastructure are protected, many IT administrators will discover the harsh reality that it is not. The rapid adoption of virtualization through fragmented implementations that lack standardization will expose gaps in the security and backup procedures in virtual environments over the next year. Brian Dye, Symantec’s vice president of product management, provided his company’s views on these storage trends for 2011. – …

SingTel Down 2.6%; Trends negative: Citigroup

SingTel (Z74.SG) off 2.6% at 2-month low $2.96 as weak market sentiment, ongoing concerns over earnings visibility weigh, says Dow Jones.

Telco last week reported in-line fiscal 1Q11 earnings but warned of potentially lower contributions from associates in coming quarters.

Citigroup, which has Hold call with $3.00 target, says 5% dividend yield decent but notes competition getting more intense, with key earnings driver Optus at risk of losing market share to Telstra, while margins from Singapore operations remain under pressure with pay-TV content costs rising.

“The trends are distinctly negative biased in our view,” says SingTel. Near-term support at $2.87 (June 9 low).
