Tony Williams Lifetime Tribute Vernon Reid, Medeski, Jack Bruce

FOUR MONSTER TALENTS GATHER TO SALUTE VISIONARY MUSICIAN & BAND

Tony Williams Lifetime Tribute featuring legendary bassist of Cream and one-time Lifetime member Jack Bruce, guitarist Vernon Reid (Living Colour), organist John Medeski (Medeski Martin & Wood), and ace drummer Cindy Blackman brings their unique take on Williams’ revolutionary music to The Blue Note in New York City (Jan. 27-30), Yoshi’s in Oakland (Feb. 2-5) and Jazz Alley in Seattle (Feb. 7 & 8).

Lifetime was founded as a trio in 1969 by Tony Williams who featured electric guitarist John McLaughlin and organist Larry Young. Lifetime’s first album, titled Emergency!, was rejected by many jazz fans who came to know Williams’ music from his work with the Miles Davis Quintet in the ‘60s, but many now consider it a fusion classic. Jack Bruce joined Lifetime on their second recording Turn It Over, providing bass and vocals, making the group a quartet. But Lifetime was short-lived, and Williams took the concept through various iterations, starting with the New Tony Williams Lifetime 1975. The last New Lifetime recording, Play or Die, was released in 1980. Williams, widely considered one of the greatest drummers of all time, continued to perform and record extensively until his untimely death in 1997.

The idea of a tribute band “really started a long time ago with the tragic death of Mr. Williams,” Vernon Reid wrote in his blog at livingcolourmusic.com on the eve of the Japan dates. “I’ve had the great fortune to work with the extraordinary bassist Jack Bruce of Cream, and during a tour with him started to chat about Tony Williams and Lifetime and their close personal relationship. I thought of Cindy Blackman, a true devotee of Mr. Williams whose work in that regard is not as well known as her long association with the rock star Lenny Kravitz. John Medeski’s organ work evokes the mysterious power of the vastly under-appreciated Larry Young.” Reid went on to cite John McLaughlin of the original Lifetime band as a major influence on his guitar playing, “mainly from the later Mahavishnu period, the seeds of which were sown in Tony Williams Lifetime.”

Cindy Blackman also expressed her excitement at being involved in the group, exclaiming “Tony Williams is my drum hero! The Tony Williams Lifetime influenced not only Miles Davis but Mahavishnu, Return to Forever and the next three decades of electric music to the present.”

For Jack Bruce, paying tribute to Williams is a homecoming that is more than welcome. “One of the greatest highlights of my musical career was playing with Tony’s amazing band,” he said. “Together I believe we can rekindle the spirit of a more joyous and optimistic era.”

The Rolling Stones to Appear on Ian Stewart Tribute Album

THE ROLLING STONES TO APPEAR WITH
ORIGINAL BASSIST BILL WYMAN FOR BOB DYLAN
COVER

Ian Stewart

Spinner, Consequence of Sound, TwentyFourBit, NME, and other
music outlets are reporting that The
Rolling Stones
will appear on a tribute album for Ian Stewart.

On March 8, British piano player Ben Waters will release Boogie for Stu, the proceeds of
which will benefit the British Heart Foundation. Waters recently
revealed that Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood, Jools Holland, and PJ Harvey
(Waters’ cousin) had contributed to the album. In a posting on his website, Waters also let it slip that Keith
Richards
had played guitar on three tracks and sang on one, while Mick Jagger had “played
harmonica and sung fantastically on one track.”

According to the band’s fan site It’s Only Rock N’
Roll
, original Stones bassist Bill Wyman will also appear with the band, plus Jools Holland and Ben
Waters
for a cover
of Bob Dylan‘s “Watching the River
Flow.” The project will be produced by Glyn Johns. The Stones’ management has
neither confirmed nor denied the reports.

Often referred to as the “Sixth Stone,” Stewart was the band’s original keyboardist who was dismissed from their
stage
lineup in 1963 by then-manager Andrew Loog Oldham. He went on to become the road manager for the
band and contributed keyboard and percussion parts to every Stones album from 1964-1986, with the exception of
1968′s Beggar’s Banquet.

Stewart died of a heart attack on Dec. 12 1985 at the age of 47.

Jeff Beck

Jeff Beck paid fitting
tribute to Les Paul last
summer, celebrating what would have been the pioneering guitarist’s 95th birthday
by playing his friend and mentor’s music, along with classic tunes from the era, in the same Times Square nightclub
that Paul played every Monday for 14 years before his death in August 2009.

Sponsored by Gibson Guitar and billed as “A Celebration of Les Paul,” Beck was joined by The Imelda May Band at the Iridium Jazz
Club in June 2010. The two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee mesmerized the star-studded audience with
a tour de force performance of classics Paul recorded with Mary Ford, “How High The Moon,” “Vaya Con Dios” and
“Mockin’ Bird Hill,” along with such rock and roll standards as “Twenty Flight Rock” and “Walking In The Sand.”

For those left off the guest list, Eagle Rock Entertainment and ATCO will offer this one of a kind performance to
purchase. Rock and Roll Party to Honor Les Paul will be available on DVD and CD February 22. A
PBS special of the event, Jeff Beck Honors Les Paul, is set to premiere on November 27 and air throughout
December. Check local listings for times.

Following these releases, Beck will take the “Rock And Roll Party” on the road for a short U.S. tour. Beck will once
again be backed by The Imelda May Band and its enchanting singer Imelda May, who joined Beck on stage
at the 2010 Grammy® Awards for a spot-on rendition of Paul’s “How High The Moon.” Further details about tickets

Jerry Douglas: Tut Taylor Tribute Record

A TRIBUTE TO THE DOBRO LEGEND

Southern Filibuster: A Tribute to Tut Taylor

There isn’t a Dobro player alive who doesn’t owe Tut Taylor. Taylor is a towering figure in the world of acoustic music, championed for his flat-picking mastery by generations of fellow musicians and connoisseurs of rural American music.

One of Taylor’s lifelong devotees is Jerry
Douglas
, perhaps the most celebrated Dobro player in the world for more than 30 years. Douglas honors his inspiration with Southern Filibuster: A Tribute to Tut
Taylor
(released July 13 on E1 Music).

For this labor of love, Douglas assembled 14 of the world’s greatest Dobro players to interpret compositions penned
by Taylor. He also enlisted Nashville’s finest backing musicians for the recording including Ronnie
McCoury

Barenberg
(guitar), Barry Bales (bass), Fred Carpenter (fiddle), Stuart Duncan
(fiddle), Chris Jones (guitar), Mike Compton (mandolin), Dennis Crouch (bass),
Bryan Sutton (guitar), and Mike Bub (bass).

All of the proceeds from Southern Filibuster
go directly to Taylor. And even best of all, they didn’t tell Taylor about the project until it was a wrap, giving him
one of the nicest surprises of his 86 years.
