Marco Benevento Trio :: 12.04.10 :: The Independent :: San Francisco, CA

There’s a resounding rightness about the Marco Benevento Trio. Comprised of Benevento on keys, The Slip’s Andrew Barr on drums and TLG’s Reed Mathis on bass, these three swing and soar with a fearless intensity and grace not often seen in modern jazz trios. It’s as if someone blended the DNA of the classic Bill Evans Trio with Squarepusher and Can to create a hybrid that transcends any simple genre tag. You can hear them in action on Between The Needles And Nightfall – one of 2010′s standout instrumental releases – and by all reports the recent San Fran show was a smoker, and our pal Mr. Margaretten brings us some scenes from the night.

Stanton Moore Trio | 05.06 | Los Angeles

Words by: Jamie Dewaele | Images by: Brigitte Bard

Stanton Moore Trio with Anders Osborne :: 05.06.10 :: The Mint :: Los Angeles, CA

Stanton Moore Trio :: 05.06 :: S.F.

Funk is a genre of music that emphasizes the ‘down’ or ‘off’ beat. It is usually played with the expressed purpose of inciting the audience to get up and dance. Music legends like James Brown, Little Richard, George Clinton, and the Funky Meters are credited with creating ‘funky’ music. Today there is a rich tradition of funk carried on by performers such as Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, the Greyboy Allstars, and Soulive. Galactic is one funk band that has been playing for nearly 15 years. One of Galactic’s founding members, drummer Stanton Moore, is currently touring with his trio in support of their new album, Groove Alchemy (released April 13 on Telarc). On this album, Stanton Moore (flanked by Robert Walter on keys and Will Bernard on guitar) explores the roots of funk drumming to provide a blueprint for those drummers out there that would like to grasp the art of funk drumming. In fact, Stanton released a DVD and wrote a book that accompanies the album.

Stanton was born in New Orleans and attended Loyola University, where he was awarded a BA in music and business. Stanton remained in New Orleans where he learned from and was influenced by musicians such as Dr. John, Professor Longhair, and The Meters. In 1996 he helped found Galactic, recently labeled in David Simon’s new show Treme as “a white version of The Meters.” Stanton’s list of collaborators reads like a who’s who of improvisational musicians: John Scofield, Chris Wood, Charlie Hunter, Skerik, Donald Harrison, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Marco Benevento, just to name a few. Two musicians that he has teamed up with more recently to form his trio are Robert Walter and Will Bernard. Walter is easily one of the most talented jazz-funk keyboardists around. Walter grew up in San Diego, where he attended the School of Creative and Performing Arts. It was in San Diego that he helped to found the legendary jazz-funk revival group, the Greyboy Allstars. After touring extensively and establishing himself with the Allstars, Walter founded the 20th Congress. Since then, he has played with such notable musicians as Melvin Sparks, Reuben Wilson, Mike Clark, and Steve Kimock.

Anders Osborne :: 05.06 :: S.F.

Berkley native Will Bernard is a fantastic guitarist who straddles many different genres. He has been involved with everything from jazz to funk to world music to hip-hop and beyond. Bernard has played in many different bands, including Motherbug, Frequinox, and the Will Bernard Trio. He is a Grammy-nominated guitarist whose style compares favorably to that of the legendary Grant Green. He has collaborated with such amazing musicians as Dr. Lonnie Smith, Charlie Hunter, Zigaboo Modeliste and John Medeski.

At The Mint, these three talented musicians began their tour as the Stanton Moore Trio with very special guest, singer-songwriter Anders Osborne on guitar and vocals.

The Mint was absolutely packed. In fact, there was a line of about 30 people outside hoping for a chance to get in and see the show. The Trio took the stage at 10:15 p.m. and Stanton announced that they would play a couple of tunes as the Trio, then bring out Osborne for the rest of the first set, and then the second set would be all Trio. Right from note one of the opener “Pie-Eyed Manc,” the crowd got to dancing and ate up every note of music that came off that stage. They played three songs as the Trio before Osborne came out. Anders Osborne is a guitar player with a very southern-fried style, and he absolutely shreds on the guitar. In fact, he turned the Trio into a southern rock band for the next six songs. For the most part, his songs were very high energy, prompting Stanton to leap off his stool to bang on his cymbals and bass drum. This Trio is so much fun to watch because of the enthusiasm coming from Stanton Moore and Walter’s ability to play bass notes and organ notes at the same time.

After a 30-minute breather, the second set began and there was a lot more room in The Mint. They opened the set with a tune off Groove Alchemy called “Squash Blossom,” which contained some really good interplay between the three musicians. This tune showcased the fact that they have been playing together as a trio for a long time.

The highlight of the second set and perhaps the entire evening, was a Stanton original called “Sprung Monkey” featuring Ephraim Owens on trumpet and Shelley Carrol on saxophone that clocked in at 12 minutes! Next was a James Booker tune called “Keep On Gwine” that featured Bernard using his slide skills. This tune was followed by a Galactic original called “Who Took the Happiness Away?” that included a devastating guitar solo by Bernard. They closed the set and the evening with a song called “Late Night at the Maple Leaf” that sent the crowd out into the streets of L.A. in high spirits.

This show was a lot of fun and the sold out crowd danced for the duration. Which was no surprise because the type of music these three guys play when they’re together makes it impossible to keep one’s feet still.

JamBase Questionnaire: John Butler

Welcome to the fourth installment of JamBase’s weekly feature where we put a baker’s dozen of probing, wide-ranging questions to the bright lights in the jam scene (and beyond) in order to expose juicy tidbits about their musical minds. Last week we heard from STS9′s David Murphy and upcoming weeks will include insights from Trampled By Turtles, Cornmeal, U-Melt, The Sadies and more!

John Butler

Decidedly socially and environmentally conscious, the John Butler Trio also rocks pretty bloody hard. There’s a snarling intensity to Butler’s impassioned vocals and finger destroying guitar work that’s pretty un-hippy despite a reputation for being one of the kingpins of the patchouli mafia. Butler has always been more complex than that soundbite, something abundantly clear on his latest offering, April Uprising (released April 6 on ATO – JamBase review), where his punk, pop and lover man sides get an earthy airing. Oh, he’s still a reliable source of 21st century common man anthems, but Butler is reveling in his complications these days and enjoying a welcome surge from his new rhythm partners Nicky Bomba (drums) and Byron Luiters (bass).

Folks will have ample opportunity to see the new configuration in action as the Trio begins summer dates with perfectly empathetic tour partner State Radio on May 20 in San Diego, opens for Melissa Etheridge at S.F.’s Candlestick Park (5/22), and makes stops at Bonnaroo (6/13), Central Park’s SummerStage (6/15) and the Gurtenfestival in Switzerland (7/16-7/17). This is a band that spills it all out on the stage – and has since its inception – armed with fresh, interesting material and a renewed sense of purpose, all of which makes this a fine time to explore what Butler and his mates are laying down. (Dennis Cook)

Here’s what Butler had to say to our inquiries.

1. Great music rarely happens without…
Instruments and soul.

2. The first album I bought was…
Somewhere In Time by Iron Maiden. “The Loneliness of a Long Distance Runner” is a great song. Or at least that’s how I remember it.

3. The last song or album to really flip my wig was…
Missy Elliot‘s Under Construction.

4. When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to be…
A fricking Green Beret!!! Can you believe that? Then a pro skater, then an art teacher, and finally realized music is what was for me.

5. My favorite sort of gig is…
One where the crowd gives as much as the band. It’s pretty essential to a good gig.

6. One thing I wish people knew about me is…
Don’t know. I think if I answer this it will just sound gay. It’s one of those kind of questions.

7. I love the sound of…
Kookaburras (an Australian bird), my kids laughing, Hendrix’s Marshall and Timbaland‘s beats.

8. One day I hope to make an album as fantastic as…
Rumours by Fleetwood Mac.

9. The best meal I ever had on tour was at…
Just last week in France.

10. I always find the coolest audiences in…
The summer, everywhere on the planet.

11. The worst habit I’ve picked up being on the road all the time is…
Belching.

12. The Beatles or the Stones? Por que?
Mmmmm. I like ‘em both, but I guess The Beatles. Yep, THE BEATLES!!!

13. The craziest thing I ever saw was…
This was when I was 16, watching a group of drunk guys at a festival push a car through the festival boundaries. Then, a whole crowd, with me in it, started ramming the gates. The crowd behind us pushed so hard that they started pushing people underneath us; kinda like a wave. Then we became the bottom of the wave. It was crazy, scary, dangerous shit. Then all hell broke loose and all the punters raided the venue’s semi-trailers full of alcohol. It was anarchy and chaos. I’m glad I made it through that festival.

Joshua Redman Trio | 03.06 | L.A.

Words by: Jamie Dewaele | Images by: Paul R. Giunta

Joshua Redman Trio :: 03.06.10 :: Luckman Theater :: Los Angeles, CA

Joshua Redman Trio :: 03.06 :: Los Angeles

When the conversation ensues about who is carrying on the great tradition of jazz musicianship today, names like Charlie Hunter, Christian McBride, and the entire Marsalis family will undoubtedly be mentioned. If Joshua Redman‘s name does not come up, the conversation is not worth having.

Tucked into a back corner of California State University’s Los Angeles campus is one of the most beautiful and acoustically perfect rooms in Southern California. It is called the Luckman Fine Arts Complex and it is probably unknown to most concertgoers in the Los Angeles area. But this is the kind of venue one has to visit in order to see bands like the Joshua Redman Trio.

Joshua Redman was born and raised in Berkley, CA. He attended Harvard University and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a B.A. in Social Studies. He was then accepted into Yale Law School, but decided instead to take a year off and he moved to New York City where he began playing with a plethora of jazz musicians. His career and skill blossomed over the next few years and by 1994 he was touring as a bandleader. The outstanding list of musicians he has played with since then includes, but is not limited to Herbie Hancock, Dave Brubeck, Dave Matthews, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, and even The Rolling Stones. The trio for his current tour includes the amazing Reuben Rogers on stand-up bass and the melodic drumming of Bill Stewart.

Reuben Rogers is a Berklee School of Music graduate and has an impressive list of collaborators that includes Wynton Marsalis, Nicholas Payton and Dianne Reeves. Bill Stewart has been on the jazz scene for a long time. While Redman and Rogers were still in college, Stewart was playing with legendary musicians such as John Scofield, James Brown, Michael Brecker and Maceo Parker. To make a long story short, there was no shortage of talent onstage at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex on that stormy Saturday night.

Ticket time for the show was 8:00, and by 8:15 the venue started to fill up. The seated crowd was a mixture of middle-aged jazz fans and students that evidently attend Cal State. Without a word, the Trio took the stage and jumped right into the first song of the night: Redman’s interpretation of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic composition from Oklahoma! entitled “The Surrey With a Fringe on Top.” They would play two more tunes before Redman thanked the crowd for braving the elements and introduced his band. The most impressive song in the first portion was “Ghost,” which appears on his latest album, Compass. The composition began with a lengthy and driving bass intro by Rogers, with Redman playing a slow melodic sax and Stewart playing a shuffle beat with brushes. As the song began to gain momentum, Redman’s playing became more complex and around the middle of the tune the Trio had built an explosive jam that featured some of the most ambitious and risk-taking musicianship of the evening.

Joshua Redman Trio :: 03.06 :: Los Angeles

All three musicians onstage were fun to watch, each losing themselves in a moment of creative perfection. Redman plays his saxophone with his entire body, swinging it back and forth, raising his knee to his chest with screams of “Hey!” or “Woah!” in between notes, much to the delight of the 750 or so in attendance. The key to any successful band is a good rhythm section and Stewart and Rogers did not disappoint. While Redman was exploding through his saxophone, Stewart and Rogers were trading licks, laughing, and all the while providing a solid base for Redman to use as his jumping off point. Almost every song of the night began with a slow, melodic sax or bass solo, built up into the composition, then to the jam, and finally fading away to close the song.

Other notable tunes of the night included “Souldancing,” “Identity Thief” and the short but absolutely smoking interpretation of Joe Lovano’s “Blackwell’s Message.” However, the musical highlight of the evening was the final song before the encore. The title of this tune is a mystery and even the soundman did not know the name. It began with a lengthy sax solo that showcased the amount of talent Redman possesses. No one in the theater took a breath during the solo. When he concluded, the crowd burst forth with their loudest applause of the evening, and the song had not even started yet. That final unnamed composition was easily the high point of the night featuring outstanding musicianship from all three men. When the song ended, the crowd leapt to their feet for a much-deserved standing ovation. This version of the Joshua Redman Trio is not to be missed.

John Butler Trio | 02.20 | San Francisco

Words by: Justin Gillett | Images by: Eric Lawson

John Butler Trio :: 02.20.10 :: Great American Music Hall :: San Francisco, CA

John Butler Trio :: 02.20.10 :: San Francisco, CA

Last year John Butler started a new chapter in his storied career with the induction of two new musicians into his Trio. The new lineup signaled a change for Butler, who had been playing with his longtime bandmates bassist Shannon Birchall and drummer Michael Barker since 2003. While changing the dynamics of the band must have been a decision that required a lot of thought on behalf of Butler, the move almost seems like it was necessary to keep the vitality of the Trio alive. The new guns Butler brought aboard, Byron Luiters (bass) and Nicky Bomba (drums), have given the Trio a much needed shot of energy. The different skills Luiters and Bomba bring with them has helped brighten the band’s overall sound and remind people why, years ago, they fell in love with John Butler Trio in the first place.

Considering this was the Australian act’s first North American tour to feature Luiters and Bomba, when they touched down at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall all three musicians seemed intent on proving themselves individually as well as validating the strength of the band’s current incarnation.

It took a few songs for the band to truly lock in, but once they found the sweet spot the Trio was playing as tight as any previous incarnation of the band. Butler wailed on his assortment of guitars – using distorted effects to add an extra push to his acoustic solos – while Bomba kept impressive time on the drum kit. Opting to keep more of a focus on toms rather than cymbals, Bomba’s playing had a distinct tribal quality and further contributed to the Trio’s alternative roots rock sound.

John Butler Trio :: 02.20.10 :: San Francisco, CA

While it was refreshing to see Luiters start off the set with an upright bass (a mainstay of the Trio’s old sound), he quickly changed to an electric four-string Fender Precision. Because the Trio’s erstwhile bass player predominantly used an upright, the changing of instruments caught some people off guard who were not expecting piercing, metallic sounding electric bass tones. But Luiters’ delicate touch and fondness for playing in a song’s pocket worked well with the Trio’s heady sound and furthered the band’s new approach.

Though it was easy it get lost in some of the band’s Afro rhythm melees, focus couldn’t be shifted from Butler and his impressive manipulation of the various instruments he played. While he was positioned stage right, Butler’s commanding demeanor and musical dexterity held the audience rapt as he shifted between six-string acoustic, banjo, 11-string acoustic (which is really just a 12-string model with the high G string removed), six-string electric and lap steel guitar. The way Butler changed guitar tones with his myriad of effects pedals further complimented his range and innovation as an instrumentalist. His intricate, ever changing sound was a testament to Butler’s development since bursting on the scene back in the mid-90s.

As the show concluded it was apparent that Butler is now venturing into unknown territory with his new band and is in the process of truly embarking on a new musical path. He’s come a long ways from busking on the streets in Western Australia, yet somehow Butler’s enduring qualities remain intact. John Butler proved with this San Francisco show that he doesn’t need to turn his back on his roots to grow and evolve as a musician.

Chris Berry Trio with Kimock | 03.01 | Ukiah

Words by: Zack Sampsel | Images by: Rob Burgess

Chris Berry Trio with Steve Kimock :: 03.01.10 :: Ukiah Brewing Company :: Ukiah, CA

Kimock & Berry – CB3 :: 03.01 :: Ukiah, CA

The Chris Berry Trio returned to the certified organic confines of the Ukiah Brewing Company once again, this time with guitar legend Steve Kimock in tow, and gave the Redwood Empire crowd a lesson in feel-good fun and psychedelic exploration.

The evening began with a solo set from Steven Bates on acoustic guitar, who at first struck me as a woodsy version of James Blunt mixed with the voice of Bob Dylan. As the crowd packed in, Bates utilized a strong catalog of covers to raise the temperature on a damp Monday night. Launching into a strong rendition of The Beatles’ “A Day in the Life,” Bates evoked some Phish-y thoughts and a sing-along from the eclectic and equally colorful crowd. Bates also showed off his mandolin skills with a heartfelt rendition of Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” that immediately had this Widespread Panic fan thinking of John Bell and the Marley raps he peppers throughout versions of “Stop-Go.”

Previously when CB3 visited Ukiah last summer, Berry brought with him longtime friend and Panjea member Michael Kang of String Cheese Incident fame, but the revolving door of CB3 guest musicians had turned and with it came Steve Kimock. Throughout the nation, and the West Coast in particular, Kimock has made guest appearances with a plethora of bands and brings with him a legion of loyal followers – for good reason, too. Kimock, Berry and Aaron Johnston and Jesse Murphy, both of Brazilian Girls (though Murphy is no longer an active member), took the stage to show Ukiah just what they had up their sleeves.

Kimock – CB3 :: 03.01 :: Ukiah, CA

Opening with “Come Away,” Berry wasted no time in getting out his unique mbira and filling the Brew Co. with its xylophone-meets-organ sound, and the crowd loved it. From Kimock’s upstroke guitar riffs to the bouncy, rolling tones of the mbira, the inimitable sound of CB3 was locked in and the kettle was starting to boil. I’ve come to expect that the soundscapes Berry and the band create can often be so rich that they’re almost visual, and this show was more of the same.

The previous CB3 show in Ukiah featuring Kang kept with a mostly island-like, calypso groove, but Kimock brought an entirely different flavor. With a row of effects pedals in front of him that looked like he could launch rockets, Kimock did just that. Following the opening verses of “Start Over Again,” Berry said, “Take it, Stevie,” and the ensuing solo dipped into an inspired jam that resonated through the room leaving mouths agape. Creating an almost Egyptian feel, Kimock took the jam into the depths of world beat downtempo before igniting the crowd with his fluid style of searing electronica and spacey interplay. Johnston and Murphy kept the first set flowing with a quick drum and bass solo as Kimock’s nimble fingers danced up and down the fretboard over the top. From there, the band uncorked a track that sounded like something from The Disco Biscuits‘ catalog thanks to the flavorful combination of guitar and pedal magic.

If CB3′s first set was all about structure and composed rhythm, then the second set was an experimental free-for-all with Kimock let loose on almost every track, stirring the crowd like a bowl of psychedelic soup. While Berry made up lyrics on the fly about the sky splitting Redwood trees of Mendocino County, the crowd stayed engaged as they fist pumped in unison. As the set drew to a close, Berry was in typical madman form onstage, multitasking between the bongos and mbira while keeping up with the vocals the whole time. With one track left, Kimock and Berry squeezed out the last of the crowd’s energy with a huge jam that touched on elements of jungle, calypso and some old fashioned rock & roll. As the jam reached its final crescendo with Kimock’s guitar placed in his lap, a good friend turned to me and gave a colorful conclusion about the show: “Steve Kimock is the Doctor Digital of the lap licks on guitar.” I think that about sums it up.

John Butler Trio: April Uprising Out 4/6

JOHN BUTLER TRIO TO RELEASE APRIL UPRISING APRIL 6

John Butler Trio

John Butler returns with his first album in three years, April Uprising, to be released April 6. The album finds the multi-platinum Australian artist with a new line up and a new label in the States, ATO Records.

Recorded in Melbourne, Australia at Sing Sing Studios, April Uprising is the follow-up to 2007′s critically acclaimed and globally successful release, Grand National, which yielded a No. 1 U.S. Triple A single, “Better Than,” and rave reviews for its sophisticated mix of guitar stylings, hip hop beats and intelligent, socially conscious lyrics. The release also attracted a global audience and found the former busker-turned-international-recording-and-touring artist appearing at music fests worldwide performing as the John Butler Trio.

April Uprising, Butler’s most focused, diverse and accessible album to date, has already yielded a No. 1 song on the Australian charts with its first single, “One-Way Road.” A video for the single can be viewed on the JBT website here.

This spirit of renewal and rebirth was the culmination of an especially momentous period in Butler’s life. It began with the seemingly innocuous act of cutting his hair and taking a few months off in late 2008. But it was his appearance on the Australian TV series, Who Do You Think We Are, which takes well-known artists and traces their family trees, which turned out to be a life-changing experience, leading him on the personal and spiritual journey that inspired the revolutionary tone of the album.

Although many of the tracks for the April Uprising had been written, the experiences that ultimately inspired the album’s title came about through Butler’s incredible journey with the series’ documentary filmmakers. He started the voyage hoping to find poets, musicians, and revolutionaries in his past. Instead, he traced the Butler name through generations of hardship to a matriarch who sang for her survival and he traced his Bulgarian ancestry to a forebearer caught up in a violent revolt. Getting to know his ancestors – trailblazers, idealists and bona fide revolutionaries – helped him to make profound sense of his passions as a writer and musician.

Butler unveiled his new band mates in June 2009: Melbourne musician Nicky Bomba (drums and percussion) and Byron Luiters (bass) from Sydney outfit Ray Mann Three. The newly revitalized JBT recorded with long-time engineer Robin Mai and found themselves with 22 songs – 16 of which made it on the album – and a whole new musical palette in the can: playful and explosive, rhythmically complex and melodically immediate, charged with new purpose but more committed than ever to the principles of classic song craft.

Between the epic opening track, “Revolution,” and a whispered acoustic coda, “A Star is Born,” dedicated to John’s son, April Uprising is an album that combines the personal, the political and the musically memorable with skill and passion.

JBT will be touring their highly acclaimed live show to all corners of the world with many iconic festivals throughout 2010, including a sold out North American promo tour of major markets in February, followed by a full U.S. tour scheduled for late May through June 2010.

Chris Berry Trio Feat. Steve Kimock Tour Dates

CHRIS BERRY TRIO FEATURING STEVE KIMOCK ANNOUNCES WEST COAST SHOWS

Chris Berry

What happens when you put African grooves born in the ghettos of Zimbabwe with the ground breaking guitar work of San Francisco’s scene and combine it with New York City’s urban electronica? The West Coast is about to find out.

Joining together for their first multi-night tour, and performing under the guise of Chris Berry Trio (CB-3), Chris Berry has arranged his most interesting collaboration yet. Featuring Steve Kimock alongside the rhythm section of Aaron Johnston and Jesse Murphy (Brazilian Girls) comes an explosive cross-cultural musical experience for music lovers of all types. The 10-day tour will maneuver along the West Coast including dates in Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Eugene and Portland, OR.

Music first touched the Grammy award winning Chris Berry as a teen living in the heart of Zimbabwe where he carefully learned the indigenous rhythms of Africa on the sacred Mbira (African Thumb Piano). His ability to speak out against the tyranny of the Zimbabwean regime through the art of music won him overnight success across the country and in the World Music market, bringing his music around the globe.

Since then, Berry has performed on the stages of the 2000 Olympics, the Sydney Opera house and the nation’s largest festivals across the United States with his project Panjea. 2010 finds the “Afropop Superstar” (SF Chronicle) a multi-instrumentalist with grace on Mbira, the hand drum, as well as a gifted singer-songwriter whose voice is often compared to Sting.

Collectively, CB-3 has the ability to bring together three decades of music history tightly fitted into one anthology adorned with cutting-edge improvisational guitar, hip-hop and elements of modern electronica. Show goers can expect both a dance ready experience as well as an intimate view into music provoked by both the past and present.
