Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi :: 12.31.10 :: Florida Theatre :: Jacksonville, Florida

Derek & Susan by Ray Proetto

Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi put their solo acts on hold in 2010 to write and make music together with a fresh new band. In April they began playing new songs, trying to find their identity. Ten months later they have evolved into a cohesive unit, putting out sets of music that flow as majestically as the nearby St. Johns River into the Atlantic Ocean. Their New Year’s Eve celebration took place near the river banks of Jacksonville, Florida.

After an opening set from Scrapmatic, the Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band began their NYE set with “Don’t Let Me Slide” followed by my personal favorite “Midnight in Harlem,” a hopeful tune with a comforting and familiar feel. Derek & The Dominoes tune “Anyday” saw Trucks sliding up and down his guitar, evoking cheers from the attentive audience. The show took a turn down Funky Street with “Love Has Something Else to Say.” Brothers Oteil (bass, Allman Brothers Band) and Kofi Burbridge (keyboards, Derek Trucks Band) emanated fun-loving grooves from their corner of the stage all night long, making way for some patrons to sashay in their New Year’s attire up the aisles of the Florida Theatre (until being told to sit down by security).

Horn section by Ray Proetto

Kebbi Williams flowed through his saxophone across the stage, inspiring impressive leads from Oteil. Though this marked only the second show with the horn section, put together specifically for this New Year’s run, it seemed as if they had been in the band since April. Joining Williams, on trombone, was Saunders “Service” Sermons and Maurice “Mo’ Betta” Brown on trumpet.

The execution of the Eric Clapton arrangement of “Presence of the Lord” had more and more people finding their way to their feet. However, most in the audience remained unsure of what to do with themselves physically, most remaining seated and grooving cerebrally. Mike Mattison took lead vocal duties on Taj Mahal‘s “Leaving Trunk,” which made way for new blues number “That Did It”. The verses have Mattison and Mark Rivers laying down playful background vocal harmonies with Motown-esque Aah-ooh’s while Susan sings a soulful tale of heartache.

It is no secret that Susan is a world class vocalist, but on “That Did It” her guitar skills were front and center. She laid into her instrument with enough soul and power to make the ghost of Sister Rosetta Tharpe proud. Her approach to the six-string is a no-gimmick, loud and subtle reminder that she is the mother of Derek Trucks’ children.

Derek Trucks’ role as bandleader is performed perfectly. He gives everyone else onstage the space they need to become who they are musically. At times, when all eyes turn to him for a solo, he will defer the moment to someone else. Once everybody has found themselves in their given space, Trucks’ bright red Gibson SG is implied. With a meditative expression on his face, Derek tears sonic holes in the universe; each one providing grist for the mill of his spiritual journey with a guitar.

“Learn How to Love” is a thick swamp-fueled song that Derek and Susan wrote with Eric Krasno. Max Roach’s “Garvey’s Ghost” made an appearance late in the set featuring a powerful, tribal and lyrical drum solo which started with Tyler “The Falcon” Greenwell on groove duty while JJ Johnson took lead until handing it off to Greenwell, which led to both drummers playing off of each other with brilliant melody. The other band members gave the drummers their full, conscious attention during the drum solo, including Trucks, who took a knee center-stage as if to show respect for the most ancient form of musical expression.

Derek & Susan Band by Ray Proetto

The best, and rarest, quality of a good drummer is selflessness. Johnson and Greenwell pull selflessness out of each other creating a huge seamless rhythmic foundation on which the rest of the band rests upon. The end of “Garvey’s Ghost” began a cover of Joe Cocker’s “Space Captain.” which Derek and Susan recorded earlier in the year with Herbie Hancock at their backyard home studio.

The triumphant vocals at the beginning of Delany & Bonnie’s “Coming Home” started the countdown to midnight. Smiles, hugs, and kisses welcomed in the New Year as the band celebrated with Ray Charles’ “Night Time is The Right Time” and Mattison’s song “Bound for Glory”. Aretha Franklin’s “Spirit in The Dark” encored the evening and sent the North Florida faithful strutting into the night.

The band is due to release their first album in June of 2011 and has dates booked in April for Australia and New Zealand.

May the best of last year be the worst of this year.

Justin BieberIn an interview, Justin Bieber has revealed that his followers – known as Beliebers –once hid in rubbish trucks in a bid to meet him. “The Beliebers have done some pretty crazy stuff,” the Sun quoted him as saying. “Last week, the night before I was due to do a show in Germany, four girls [...]

Gunmen torch NATO trucks in Pakistan

Gunmen in Pakistan have torched a dozen trucks used for supplying fuel for NATO forces in Afghanistan. The attack took place near the northwestern city of Peshawar.

Suspected militants attack yet more NATO trucks

Gunmen in Pakistan have once again attacked and set on fire NATO supply trucks destined for Afghanistan. Around 30 lorries were engulfed in flames as suspected armed militants opened fire along the road in Khairabad.

Militants gut 40 NATO trucks in Quetta

QUETTA – At least 25 oil tankers, carrying fuel for the Nato forces stationed in Afghanistan, were completely destroyed while 15 partially damaged in a pre-dawn attack on Wednesday in the outskirts of Quetta. One person was also killed in the assault.
DIG Investigation Hamid Shakeel said over two dozens oil tankers, parked near a hotel located at the Aktherabad Bypass, were destroyed when unidentified people opened indiscriminate fire, adding that one person was also killed in the attack whose body was shifted to the Bolan Medical Complex Hospital.
But the sources said the number of vehicles parked at the terminal was over four dozens out which 25 were gutted completely. Meanwhile, the drivers managed to shift 11 tankers to safer places, they added.
According to the eyewitnesses, a group of attackers, who reached the spot in two vehicles, targeted the tankers with live ammunition and fled the scene easily.
Heavy contingents of police and Frontier Corps (FC) reached locality and cordoned off the area where the fire continued to blaze till late afternoon.
The fire brigade personnel started the operation to control the inferno but lack of vehicles and water affected their efforts badly. “The fire could not be extinguished immediately owing to the huge magnitude and lack of fire-fighting arrangements,” one of firefighters told this scribe, adding that two of his colleagues were shifted to the hospital as they fainted due to huge flames and thick smoke.
Police have registered a case and started investigation; however, no arrest has been made so far.
It is pertinent to mention that after Torkham crossing in Fata, Balochistan is the second largest route for the supplies of Nato and American troops fighting Taliban in Afghanistan. The two routes being used from the province are Karachi-Quetta via Bolan Pass and Karachi-Quetta via Khuzdar. The number of attacks on Nato tankers and containers has increased many manifolds in recent weeks, resulting in destructions of dozens of vehicle and killing of several drivers.
Agencies add: Taliban terrorists have claimed the Quetta attack and other raids his week in which nearly 60 trucks were torched and three people died.
They vowed more attacks to disrupt NatoÂ’s supply route through Pakistan and to avenge a new wave of the US drone strikes targeting Taliban and Al-Qaeda terrorists linked to the terror plot against European cities.
“We claim responsibility for attacking and torching Nato tankers in Quetta today,” Tehrik-e-Taliban Spokesman Azam Tariq told AFP.
“We will further intensify attacks with the intensification of the US drone strikes on us.”
Provincial police chief Malik Mohammed Iqbal later said some suspects from the area were being questioned but gave no further details.
On the other hand, Home Secretary Balochistan Cap (r) Akbar Hussain Durrani said the US and the Nato officialsÂ’ policy of not informing the Pakistani authorities about the position of their tankers had resulted in the latest attack.
Talking to the news agency, he said the Home Department was not informed that the vehicles would be parked at a private terminal in the outskirts of the Quetta.
He said the provincial govt with cooperation of the security agencies could provide protection to the oil tankers if the US and the Nato had made a request for pre-emptive measures.
“We have strictly advised the US-led allied forces officials that their supplies should not be moved or parked individually and without informing the Home Department,” Durrani said.
When asked whether the Balochistan government had been directed by Islamabad to shut down Chaman border for the NATO supplies, he denied and said, “No! we have not received such directives so far.”

Derek Trucks Guests On New JJ Grey Album

TOUR STARTS AUGUST 21 IN HOXEYVILLE, MI

Georgia Warhorse

Guest guitarist Derek
Trucks
joins swampy, funky roots rock artist JJ Grey on “Lullaby,” a highlight of the new album Georgia Warhorse,
nailing his performance on the first take.

Grey says, “He’s a one take person. It sounded like the greatest take of all time. He insisted we do two, three more
takes but we used the first take. It was just awesome. To me, he’s in the category of Louis Armstrong.”

Trucks admires Grey’s abilities as a writer as well, saying, “It’s a real skill to be able to take your life and what you do
and just put it to music where it actually translates, where you can trace those threads back. I enjoy that about JJ’s
music.”

Grey’s new album Georgia Warhorse comes out August 24 on Alligator. His previous album Orange
Blossoms
hit #4 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart.

piece of paper,” says Steve Sweitzer, partner of Thumper Entertainment, “We’re so happy that it’s finally coming

Herbie Hancock

Herbie Hancock‘s The Imagine Project, the new CD from multiple Grammy-winning artist and musical pioneer Herbie Hancock, is an unprecedented international recording and film project featuring collaborations between music legend Herbie Hancock and over a dozen superstars from every region of the planet. Utilizing the universal language of music to express its central themes of peace and global responsibility, the musical collaborations combine Hancock’s genre-defying musical vision with the “local” musical identity of cultures from around the world. Additionally, noted Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney (“Taxi To The Dark Side”) is serving as one of the film’s producers with veteran music producer Larry Klein serving as one of the album’s producing consultants. The Imagine Project is set for release June 22, 2010 via Hancock Records/RED.

Tracks include “The Song Goes On” with Anoushka Shankar (sitarist daughter of Ravi Shankar), Chaka Khan and Wayne Shorter which was recorded in Mumbai, India, along with a stellar group of Indian musicians; “Don’t Give Up,” a duet with guitarist extraordinaire Jeff Beck recorded in London featuring Seal and Pink, “Imagine” with Konono No. 1, Jeff Beck, Oumou Sangare and Lionel Loueke recorded in Paris and London; “Tamatant Tilay/Exodus” featuring Tinariwen, “Times They Are A Changin’” featuring The Chieftains, Lionel Loueke and Lisa Hannigan recorded in Ireland; “Jackpot” with Dave Matthews and Marcus Miller, “Space Captain” with Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, “Mi Tierra” recorded with Latin superstar Juanes in Miami and a track with Brazilian singer-songwriter Ceu recorded in São Paulo.

While the CD and film will stand, on one level, as powerful testaments for the goals of world peace, humanity and tolerance along with respect for our planet, Herbie Hancock’s The Imagine Project shall remain, at its core, entertainment content that is creatively and emotionally deeply fulfilling.

Grammys: Young, Fleck, Trucks Byrne, KOL, Zac Brown, Earle

Neil Young, Derek Trucks, Bela Fleck, David Byrne, Kings of Leon, Zac Brown

Take Home Grammys at the 52nd Annual Awards Show

Kings of Leon

Last night (Monday, January 31) the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards were held in Los Angeles. While most of the performances were not particularly inspiring, the Michael Jackson tribute featuring Smokey Robinson, Jennifer Hudson, Celine Dion, Carrie Underwood and Usher was done very well and proved quite moving. After the performance, Jackson’s children, Prince and Paris Jackson, accepted the Lifetime Achievement Award for their father.

Other performances of note included a somewhat interesting pairing of Lady Gaga and Elton John, a nice reading of “You and Me” by Dave Matthews Band, a tribute to Haiti featuring Mary J. Blige, David Foster and Andrea Bocelli, Zac Brown Band singing with Leon Russell, and the show closing combo of Drake, Lil’ Wayne and Eminem. Meanwhile, both the Black Eyed Peas and Bon Jovi were incredibly underwhelming; which is perhaps, not a shock.

And now onto the awards. There were a number of JamBase regulars who took home Grammys. Neil Young won his first ever, taking home the Grammy for Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package for The Archives Vol. 1 (1963-1972). Bela Fleck , who has been nominated in the most categories in Grammy history, took home the award for Pop Instrumental Performance for Throw Down Your Heart. Derek Trucks Band won the Best Contemporary Blues Album for Already Free. Phoenix grabbed Best Alternative Music Album with Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, Zac Brown Band was named Best New Artist, Kings of Leon won for Record of the Year, Rock Performance, Duo or Group With Vocals and Rock Song. David Byrne and Brian Eno‘s Everything That Happens Will Happen Today won Best Recording Package, Booker T. Jones grabbed a trophy for Pop Instrumental Album, Bruce Springsteen for Solo Rock Vocal Performance on Working on a Dream, Steve Earle for Best Contemporary Folk Album with Townes, and Beyonce won more trophies than anyone else, setting a record for most awards by a female artist in a single night with six.
