No small beer for Italdesign

This is an interesting ad featuring a Roman taxi driver and highlighting the clever people at Italdesign Giugiaro in Turin.

It’s actually for Corona Extra beer but its star attraction is the extraordinary Italdesign Quaranta prototype based on the 1968 Bizzrrina Manta.

Quite apart from referencing every Italian cliché in the book – pasta, Italian man still with mama, Italian man gesturing wildly and making sure his hair looks good – the car itself is absolutely stunning.

The ad itself is actually pretty good though – the Roman backdrop firmly associates the core brand with luxury and heritage – although would anyone know it’s Italdesign behind the motor?

And it ends with a humorous shot of the cabbie getting in a taxi himself having – presumably – had to give the Quaranta back.

Should Corona decide to expand the concept maybe they could do a UK ad with a London cabbie driving through a pea-soup fog, past rows of bowler-hatted, umbrella-carrying city folk walking across Westminster Bridge.

Come to think of it, Corona and Italdesign could take the concept around the world – supercar versions of the black cab/2CV/Zil limo/Chevvy etc?

Falling out of style

I wonder how Giorgetto Giugiaro really feels about seeing the ItalDesign company he spent forty years building as part of a global automaker?

He’ll surely be hoping it’ll have a better future than another Carozzerie that he headed before setting up ItalDesign in 1968 – Ghia.

From 1965 to ’67, Giugiaro, then a young, rising star of the car industry, was appointed head of design for Ghia – a company at the time most famous for a VW model, the Beetle-based Karmann Ghia coupe. Changes of ownership at Ghia meant Giugiaro’s tenure was brief. By 1970, Ghia had become a division of a major car company – Ford.

Oddly, in the same week that VW announced the ItalDesign deal, Ford announced that it had killed the Ghia sub-brand in the UK, saying it had run its course.

While the Ghia studio in Turin remains part of the Ford empire, the Ghia brand was very soon relegated to little more than a top-line trim level. Successfully too, for 30 years and counting, through various generations of Granadas, Cortinas, Escorts and Fiestas. Ghia meant plush velour seats instead of vinyl. The vinyl went on the roof, of course.

Ghia trim had come to stand for fake wood and a soft ride – certainly not the image Ford wants to project, in the UK at least. Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo have all lost their Ghia versions over the past year or so, and the last of the Ghia-badged Galaxy models will be gone any day now.

“It’s served us very well – but we’re in a new decade and we’ve got to show people we’re doing something a little bit different,” said Ford of Britain marketing director Mark Simpson.

In its place is Titanium, a more modern and youthful sub-brand, but pitched above Ghia in terms of specification, so as not to alienate the older buyer more accustomed to a Ghia.

“The Ghia customer wanted luxury and more appointment. Titanium is more modern – though we had to satisfy older customers – we didn’t want to follow Oldsmobile and reinvent the brand, but lose all our existing customers,” Simpson said. The plan seems to be working. Take-up of Titanium trim is much greater. “On old Fiesta, we sold 3% Ghia, but with the new Fiesta, Titanium take-up is over 20%,” he added.

Ghia trim lives on in many European markets, however, but the studio was reconfigured as an “virtual design centre” in 2002 – its last tangible contribution to the Ford range was the Streetka cabrio of a few years back.

It’s a bit of a waste, really – considering what might have been. In 1964, Ghia even tried to become a supercar brand of its own, creating a beautiful Chrysler-powered coupe called the L6.4 (the name relates to the size of its 6.4-litre V8 engine).

It’s a rare car, but a familiar one– how many 40-somethings had the Corgi Toys model of the L6.4 in the ’60s, complete with the little corgi dog on the parcel shelf? Coolbear certainly had one (and probably still has it somewhere) and as a young lad often wondered why he never saw a real one on the streets of Blackpool.

Probably something to do with the total production run – just 25 were built. Customers included Frank Sinatra. But he preferred Vegas to the Golden Mile…

ANALYSIS: Has Giugiaro got the timing right?

A plan for Fiat and Chrysler: Let there be two Fiats

Italy’s biggest conglomerate splits itself in two to promote a carmaking merger

SERGIO MARCHIONNE, the boss of both the Fiat Group and Chrysler, likes to spring surprises. At a marathon presentation in Turin of his five-year plan for Fiat on April 21st he confirmed, as expected, that he is planning to separate Fiat’s other businesses from Fiat Auto as a precursor to creating a combined entity with Chrysler. But he also revealed, to the amazement of many, that Chrysler, in which Fiat received a 20% share last summer as part of a deal with the American government to turn the bankrupt carmaker around, had made an operating profit of $143m in the first quarter. Just as significantly, Mr Marchionne announced that its net debt had fallen from $8 billion in November to $3.8 billion.

Although it may have taken a good deal of financial engineering to produce such numbers, Fiat is easily exceeding its targets for restoring its affiliate to (at least short-term) health. Relatively undemanding milestones will quite soon take Fiat’s stake in Chrysler up to 35%. This, along with the news that John Elkann, a 34-year-old scion of the Agnelli family which holds a controlling interest in Fiat, would replace Luca di Montezemolo as chairman, cheered investors. Mr Elkann is also chairman of Exor, the Agnellis’ listed investment company which holds a 30% stake in Fiat. He has consistently supported Mr Marchionne in his efforts to transform Fiat’s subscale car business. Since last year that has meant backing him in the deal with Chrysler and the failed attempt to carry off a second distressed asset in the form of General Motors’ European unit, Opel/Vauxhall. Unlike Europe’s other great automotive dynasties—the Peugeots and the Quandts of BMW—Mr Elkann (who is a director of the Economist Group) appears more interested in unlocking value than in preserving family control. …

Mischievous Marchionne?

I wonder what they make of Sergio Marchionne’s latest reported comments over at PSA? Fiat’s talkative supremo is highlighting PSA as ripe for another merger attempt after the MMC tie-up unravelled. He has a point. PSA is, on Marchionne’s platform-scale analysis, too small to survive on its own.

PSA’s record of selective collaborations on engines and certain vehicles (like the Sevel LCVs JV with Fiat) might not be enough going forward. Arguably, tougher conditions in the industry mean that it still needs a deeper strategic partnership with another firm in order to take more cost out, get greater scale economies and extend international presence.

Who might make a suitable partner then? Well, there’s a car firm based in Turin led by a guy putting an alliance together that is also still short of the required volume for survival…

Google plans on appealing the convictions of three of its employees in Italian court, after a judge in Milan ruled that the search-engine giant was responsible for a 2006 video clip, posted to Google Video’s Italian site, showing three Turin high school students bullying a teenager with Down syndrome.
