Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 Apps Include Twitter, Netflix, OpenTable

Microsoft is pinning its smartphone-market hopes on Windows Phone 7, its competitor to the Apple iPhone and the growing family of Google Android devices. As other smartphone platforms have demonstrated in recent years, a robust app library greatly influences users& Apple’s App Store and its hundreds of thousands of apps are frequently cited as a key draw, while Palms lack of apps is just as often blamed for that platforms failure to build a market presence. Taking no chances, Microsoft is preparing to launch Windows Phone 7 with apps from prominent brands already in place. Those brands include Netflix, Twitter, OpenTable and LucasArts’ "Star Wars." RockMelt Friends Facebook, Twitter to Rival Chrome, Firefox, IE

RockMelt Nov. 7 launched to limited beta its social Web browser that lets users connect to their Facebook and Twitter accounts. This connection lets users post status updates and share other bits of content right from the browser window. The idea is that users needn’t go directly to Facebook and Twitter to share or even Google.com to search. Flock had a similar idea in 2007, but failed to catch on with the bulk of users even as Google Chrome carved out an 8.5 percent browser market share. RockMelt is actually a lot like Chrome in functionality, offering an incognito mode for private Web browsing. There is reason for this. RockMelt is built on top of Chromium, the open-source project that backs Chrome. Navigating amid the different social tools in RockMelt was a breeze, and this is where RockMelt is a cut above Chrome, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Apple Safari Web browsers. Check out our initial RockMelt set-up and tour in this eWEEK slide show. – …

Apple CEO Steve Jobs mentioned on the company’s Q4 earnings call Oct. 18 that Apple is saving money for "strategic opportunities." Read: acquisitions, folks. "We’d like to continue to keep our powder dry because we do feel that there are one or more strategic opportunities in the future," Jobs said.
