Government of Singapore Investment Corp., the biggest investor in Citigroup Inc. and UBS AG, plans to hold on to its stakes in the banks for “many years” and will only consider selling if there are attractive offers.
“We look to continue to hold on to our stakes in UBS and Citigroup for many years to come,” Tony Tan, deputy chairman of the Singapore sovereign wealth fund, said in a Jan. 29 interview at Davos, Switzerland, where he attended the World Economic Forum meeting. ‘But one never says never; if someone offers an extremely high price, of course we’ll look at the possibility.”

As we reported earlier, Sound Tribe Sector 9 bassist David Murphy is currently in a fight against cancer. The band issued a new statement this past Friday night updating fans on Murphy’s status:
First and foremost, David, STS9 and their families can’t thank all of you enough for your incredible support through the past week since the announcement of David’s cancer. We’ve received thousands of notes, prayers, well wishes and support all the way from Japan to Antarctica. David went into a nearly 9 hour surgery Wednesday morning and has since been on a steady path of recovery. He’s awake, standing when he can, and overall in great physical form given what he went through just 48 hours ago. While the path to recovery is a long one, you can see the warrior that is our brother Murph every step of the way. He’s well aware of the outpouring of support for him and he’s simply floored by it, as are all of us. We are all blessed and honored to have so many people surrounding us in numerous ways through this challenge. We will continue to keep everyone updated as the days and weeks go by.

Singapore Air net falls on fines, lags estimates: Update

Singapore Airlines, the world’s second-largest carrier by market value, reported a worse-than- estimated 29% drop in third-quarter profit after it booked charges relating to antitrust cargo fines.
Net income declined to $288.3 million in the three months ended December from $404 million a year earlier, the carrier said in a statement to the Singapore stock exchange today. Profit was expected to be $299 million, based on the average of six analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Singapore Air made a provision of $199 million for the fines.
Bank of Singapore says yuan may appreciate 6% a year: Update

Investors should buy yuan-denominated assets or open yuan deposit accounts because the Chinese currency may appreciate by as much as 6% a year, according to Bank of Singapore.
“If anything is close to certain it’s that the renminbi will appreciate,” Head of Product Development Marc van de Walle said at a media briefing in Singapore today, using the yuan’s alternative name. “It’s got the potential to appreciate between 4% and 6% annually, and maybe even a bit faster,” he said, without providing a specific time frame.

The world’s largest processor of natural rubber is expected to raise up to $360 million through its listing on the Singapore exchange.

Standard Chartered Plc, the U.K. bank that generates most of its earnings in Asia, agreed to buy Singapore’s GE Money to bolster its consumer lending operations in the city-state.
The transaction is likely to be completed this quarter, London-based Standard Chartered said in an e-mailed statement today. Ashia Razzaq, the bank’s head of investor relations for Asia, and Lisa Farrugia, a spokeswoman for GE Capital in Southeast Asia, declined to provide the financial terms. Consumer prices in Singapore rose a tad faster than expected in December because of costlier cars, housing, food and fuel, prompting some analysts to say that the central bank may tighten monetary policy again in April.
The consumer price index gained 4.6% in December from a year earlier, compared with a 3.8% increase in November, the Department of Statistics said in a statement Monday. The pace was the fastest in two years and beat the median 4.5% forecast from 10 analysts polled by Dow Jones Newswires.

South Korea’s Samsung C&T Corporation (000830.KS) has won a US$200 million ($257.5 million) contract to build a third storage tank at Singapore’s upcoming liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal, the company said on Friday.
It won the contract from Singapore LNG Corporation (SLNG), and expects to complete the project by early 2014. The additional tank will allow the terminal to handle up to 6 million tonnes per year (tpy).
