DBS Vickers upgrades Sim Lian to buy with 53 cents price target

DBS Vickers upgrades Sim Lian Group (S05.SG) to “buy” from “hold”, raises target price to 53 cents from 49 cents, based on 35% discount to NAV estimate vs 40% discount previously.

The brokerage says the developer could benefit from expected pickup in collective sales activity in Singapore’s private residential market next year.

Microsofts Windows Mobile blog has announced shopping, anti-piracy and developer-friendly upgrades to the Windows Marketplace for Mobile app store. The store will be open to Windows Mobile 6.0 and 6.1 customers later in November.

Apple developers previously had to post both paid and free versions of their mobile applications on Apple’s App Store. That may become a thing of the past, however, now that Apple is allowing developers to integrate functionality into apps that lets users upgrade from the stripped-down, free version of an app to the paid version without going through the App Store.

HP Makes Security, Maintenance Upgrades to HP-UX 11i

HP is enhancing the security and maintenance capabilities to its Unix operating system, HP-UX 11i v3. Data center administrators can now add security patches to 100 servers at a time, and HP bulked up its access security through support for Bastille technology. The upgrades come as HP looks to entice Sun customers who may be worried about the Oracle acquisition to come to HP.

Microsoft Downplays Yahoo Upgrades to E-Mail, Search, Messenger Apps

Microsoft responds to Yahoo’s Aug. 24 announcement of upgrades for users by insisting that it had already integrated many of Yahoo’s new features, including search results from social networking sites such as Facebook, into its offerings for Windows Live. Despite a 10-year partnership agreement centered on the use of Bing on Yahoo’s sites, Microsoft and Yahoo evidently remain fierce competitors in other online arenas, such as e-mail.

IBM announces second-quarter profits of $3.1 billion, up 12 percent over the same period in 2008, despite seeing a 13.3 percent dip in revenues. IBM also increases its earnings outlook for 2009 to earnings per share of $9.70, up from $9.20.

IBM Finally Upgrades Its XIV Storage System

XIV’s Tier 1 external-disk system is completely distributed. It packages all data storage into 1MB chunks and spreads them around the system, so that no one or two disks have to handle most of the workload. This saves on disk life and increases performance.
