Alberta Cross Sells Out Shows Across The U.S., Tour Confirmed With Black Rebel Motorcycle Club

Alberta Cross

Alberta Cross just wrapped up their first ever nationwide headlining tour where they performed to sold out crowds in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington DC, San Francisco and more. This spring, Alberta Cross will tour with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.

Their latest album, Broken Side of Time arrives on the heels of their EP The Thief & the Heartbreaker, which earned the band U.K. touring slots with Oasis, The Shins and Bat For Lashes.

Founded by guitarist/vocalist Petter Ericson Stakee and bassist Terry Wolfers, Alberta Cross took shape when the two began jamming together in London’s east end. Stakee, from London by way of Sweden, and Wolfers, a Brit himself, moved to New York City in 2008 in pursuit of renewed creative energy and new challenges. Broken Side of Time is born of the struggles and setbacks the band faced along the way. The album serves as Alberta Cross’ official introduction to the U.S.

As Stakee explains, “It’s kind of a desperation album, a darker album; it’s definitely angrier. We’ve been in a crazy place during the whole album and you can hear that.”

Led by Stakee and Wolfers, Alberta Cross is rounded out by guitarist Sam Kearney, drummer Austin Beede and keyboardist Alec Higgins. Broken Side of Time was recorded in Austin, TX and produced by Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Dead Confederate, Heartless Bastards). John O’Mahony (Depeche Mode, Coldplay, Kasabian) mixed the album at Electric Lady in New York City.

Phosphorescent: Tour w/ David Gray

PHOSPHORESCENT ON TOUR WITH DAVID GRAY THIS SPRING

Phosphorescent

Last fall, Phosphorescent bassist Jeff Bailey was watching a primetime news show when British songwriter David Gray appeared for an interview. The interviewer inquires as to what Gray is listening to on his iPod and he responds, “Frank Sinatra, and an album called Pride by Phosphorescent.”

Admittedly skeptical, the band did a quick internet search and found Gray singing the praises of Phosphorescent to Entertainment Weekly and a Spin review of a David Gray performance, which mentions that Gray opened the show by “emerging from the darkness to the narcotic strains of Phosphorescent’s ‘Cocaine Lights’.”

A month or so passes when an email shows up in the inbox of Phosphorescent’s Matthew Houck from Gray himself, with enthusiastic support for the music and an open ended invitation to open any of Gray’s upcoming tour dates. Phosphorescent accepted the invite and will soon be hitting the road with Gray throughout the United States and Europe.

Phosphorescent is also nearly complete with their upcoming album; details will be announced very soon.

Check out a video of the band performing “A Picture Of Our Torn Up Praise” at the American Songwriter Magazine offices here.

Kaki King: Junior Out 4/13 Signs To Rounder

KAKI KING SIGNS TO ROUNDER RECORDS, JUNIOR OUT APRIL 13

Kaki King

Singer & guitarist extraordinaire Kaki King has signed with Rounder Records. Named a “Guitar God” by Rolling Stone, King has spent the past decade gathering critical acclaim and fan admiration. She received a Golden Globe nomination for her contribution to the musical score of the 2007 film Into the Wild, and also performed on the Foo Fighters‘ 2007 Grammy winning album, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace.

As with her previous album, 2008′s Dreaming of Revenge, Junior was produced by Malcolm Burn (Emmylou Harris, Patti Smith), but unlike each of King’s previous efforts – where she recorded all the instruments herself – for Junior she enlisted help from multi-instrumentalist Dan Brantigan and drummer Jordan Perlson. King wrote each of the album’s 11 songs.

Following her previously announced European dates, King will spend the Spring in the U.S., hitting New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Nashville, Chicago and Los Angeles, among many others.

Dutch take to the ice in hundreds

As much of Europe sought refuge from the cold, hundreds of Dutch embraced the chill yesterday for the year’s first skating event on natural ice, held on the frozen Henschoter Lake in Utrecht. “It has been very busy, I expect that up to 1,500 people will have taken part by the end of the day,”

The songs have become staples of Deer Tick’s live shows over the past year, and are already fan favorites – exactly who this EP is for.

The Shaky Hands: Album/Tour

THE SHAKY HANDS LET IT DIE OUT NOW ON KILL ROCK STARS, DECEMBER TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED

The Shaky Hands

This year begins a new chapter for Portland group The Shaky Hands. Former drummer Colin Anderson left in mid-2008, a few months before the band’s second album, Lunglight, was released to critical acclaim. Nick Delffs‘ brother Nathan covered percussion for a short stint at the end of last year, but ultimately the band wanted a stable drummer with whom they could connect.

Jake Morris, of fellow Portland band The Joggers, joined in January 2009, shortly before The Shaky Hands left for a two-week tour with The Meat Puppets. On the road, the band and Morris clicked almost immediately, and found that Morris was exactly what they wanted in a drummer and band mate. The addition of the new drummer set the wheels in the motion for The Shaky Hands to begin writing their third album; evolving their style to match the changes they’d undergone as a band.

Following the tour with The Meat Puppets, Delffs packed his bags and went to live in India for a month and a half, leaving behind his guitar and embarking on a fast from Western music. He sang in the temples and wrote lyrics for the new album, which the band had already started writing, but took the longest break he’d ever taken from playing in a band. This journey, which culminated with a 23-hour plane ride leading directly into a 37-hour drive to Austin for SXSW, altered the direction of the new record — although perhaps not in the most obvious way.

“I feel like my trip to India had a profound effect on the album,” Delffs explains. “Because I wasn’t playing music with anybody and I was having this break, I ended up thinking about it a lot, on the verge of obsessing over things. A lot of the planning and lyrics were done out there, finishing some of the songs. I was really inspired by Indian music and I feel like it changed me, but I wasn’t inspired to make it. It almost inspired me to make straight forward rock for some reason.”

Delffs launched back into the rock scene immediately, playing SXSW and touring back up to Portland. The band spent nearly two months on the road with The Thermals in spring of 2009, where they wrote and developed songs, allowing the new tracks to attain lives of their own each night. After the tour, at Morris’ recommendation, the band went into Jackpot! Studios with producer Jay Pellicci (Deerhoof, Erase Errata). There they spent ten days recording the songs they’d written and practiced, mostly in one or two takes. “It turned out to be the perfect experience for recording the album,” Delffs says. “This was the first time I really trusted someone else to produce and mix everything. We were there for ten days and somehow we made that small amount of time work out perfectly. We never labored over any performances. We really wanted to get the essence of the live band. And generally the first or second take had the most feeling and captured the song the best.”

The finished album, Let It Die, is a collection of eleven organic, impassioned rock songs that are happily unpolished and grounded. This disc is split into Side A and Side B to compliment the varying styles the songs on the record embrace. Side A collects more raucous, upbeat tracks while Side B offers hushed, mellower numbers. The standout, for Delffs, is the compelling “Allison and the Ancient Eyes,” a song he feels embodies both sides and their corresponding feelings. “We had specific little things that we agreed on and talked about a lot,” Delffs says. “We wanted it to be really bare bones and have it extremely simple. I think we all just knew the songs pretty well and how they should go. We didn’t want to over talk it.”

Praise for The Shaky Hands:

“Drowning pop compositions in jittery poly-rhythms is indie rock’s move du jour, but the Shaky Hands aren’t trendy; they make fine-boned, classic rock & roll in the Strokes’ vein.” -Pitchfork

“Prodded by clattering drums and scraping guitars, frontman Nick Delffs often sounds desperate, moaning and muttering like someone who’s torn between leaping into the abyss and clinging to hope.” -Spin

Molina and Johnson: Tour/Album

MOLINA AND JOHNSON Announce Early 2010 U.S. Tour

Offer Up New MP3, Album Now Available For Pre-Order

Molina and Johnson

It was an all-too-rare alignment of stars that brought prolific, new American songwriters Jason Molina and Will Johnson together some time ago to record the aptly titled Molina and Johnson (set for release on November 3) under the big Texas sky. Lucky for all of us, it will happen again in early 2010 for a full-on, intimate U.S tour. Following a string of European live dates that begin in November, Molina and Johnson will convene in late January to loop from Texas around the Southeast, East Coast and Midwest, returning to the Lone Star State again. On each of the U.S. dates, the duo will be joined by Chris Brokaw (Come/Codeine).

Currently, Johnson is hitting the skins on the Monsters of Folk tour, while Molina just wrapped up a tear across Europe with Magnolia Electric Co.

To go along with the U.S. tour announcement, Molina and Johnson are sharing one of the true-blue duets from their collaboration. Even on an album chock-full of heartbreakers, “Almost Let You In” offers up its fair share of cutting moments. “Granted that I ever, ever stop playing to win, could you find it in the cards to bring me to the light?” is the plea to what could be a woman or a higher being (or both). Mid-song, the atmospheric guitar, acoustic strums and tambourine taps all cut out for the soft rap of fingertips on the body of an acoustic guitar for a moment of real reflection.

Molina and Johnson will be released by Secretly Canadian next week, on November 3 (Nov. 2 in the U.K.) on CD/LP/Digital formats. The album is now available for pre-order HERE.

Brett Dennen & Grace Potter Tour

BRETT DENNEN ANNOUNCES FALL TOUR WITH GRACE POTTER & THE NOCTURNALS

Brett Dennen

Brett Dennen, whose narrative-rich lyrics and world-infused melodies have earned comparisons to Bob Marley and Paul Simon, has announced a Fall Tour with Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. He will hit the Austin City Limits Festival in October, then perform at both The Greek and The Hollywood Bowl with Jason Mraz in October before setting out with Potter in November (full dates listed below). Registered fans on BrettDennen.net can purchase presale tickets on Thursday, September 10. Tickets go on sale to the general public for all shows starting Friday morning, September 11.

Already one of the fastest growing touring artists on the road, Brett recently told Billboard Magazine, “I’m really excited about this tour because I think it’s going to be a little more rocking than tours I’ve done in the past.” He adds, “Grace really knows how to rock it.”

Dennen’s current single, “Heaven” featuring Natalie Merchant debuted on iTunes last week and is already being adopted early and fast by AAA radio. The single’s success is a further step in Dennen’s rising profile after a summer of touring some of the biggest festivals like Bonnaroo, Rothbury, Summer Fest, Mountain Jam, Outside Lands Festival and Bumbershoot, as well as joining O.A.R. at venues like Red Rocks and Madison Square Garden.

Spanish minister on rocks over Gibraltar visit

It was some time back in 1704 when a Spanish minister last set foot on Gibraltar after Spain ceded the territory to Britain under the Treaty of Utrecht. After much diplomatic wrangling Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos is due to hold talks with his British counterpart David Miliband and Gibralter’s Chief Minister Peter Caruana on the rock itself.

Spanish minister ends 300-year Gibraltar snub

Residents of rocky colony fly the flag to demonstrate their allegiance to Britain

The first Spanish minister to visit Gibraltar for 300 years crossed the border this afternoon, skipping the normal traffic jams and being greeted by union flags hanging from windows and balconies.

Foreign minister, Miguel Angel Moratinos, is making his historic visit to the Rock under the terms of a three-way agreement with Britain, Gibraltar and Spain that has done much to ease centuries of mutual antagonism over the tiny colony.

He is meeting Britain’s foreign secretary, David Miliband, and Gibraltar’s chief minister, Peter Caruana, to sign agreements covering everything from police co-operation to the environment.

Uniformed Gibraltarian bobbies greeted Moratinos’ car as it skipped the queues that normally form at the border and drove straight on to the Rock.

Gibraltarians dusted off their union flags and hung them out to remind Moratinos where their loyalties lie.

Although recent agreements signed under the three-way pact have helped sort out many historic gripes, Spain still claims sovereignty over the two-and-a quarter square miles of rocky outcrop.

That sovereignty was signed away in the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 but Spain claims that, under United Nations decolonisation rules, Gibraltar should have been handed back long ago.

Moratinos and his hosts were due to ride the cable car to offices high up the 1,300ft rock that dominates Gibraltar, where they were to hold their meeting.

A recent spat over the maritime frontiers between Gibraltar and Spain had put today’s meeting in danger.

Caruana recently called on Gibraltar boats to fire off distress flares to call for help if they were stopped by Spain’s civil guard patrol boats while approaching the Rock’s harbour.

Spain’s opposition conservative People’s Party (PP) has called Moratinos a “traitor” and claims the visit is an “insult to the dignity of Spain”.

“This is one more backward step towards renouncing the battle for Spanish sovereignty,” said the PP’s secretary general in the southern region of Andalucía, Antonio Sanz.

The opposition Gibraltar Socialist Labour Party condemned the visit, saying it should not have been allowed while Spain was claiming sovereignty over disputed waters. “The fact that Mr Moratinos is coming is, for us at least, an opportunity to show him just how British Gibraltar is and will stay,” said party spokesman Fabian Picardo. “We certainly won’t have our noses rubbed into Spain’s latest affront to the sovereignty of our waters.”
