Manufacturing electric cars: The lighter drive
Electric cars made from carbon fibre will be safer and go farther
MARK WEBBER has a lot to thank tiny strands of carbon for. When his Formula 1 car cartwheeled in a spectacular 306kph (190mph) crash at the recent Valencia Grand Prix, what helped him to escape unscathed was the immensely strong carbon-fibre “tub” that racing drivers now sit in. Carbon fibre is an expensive alternative to making things in steel or aluminium, but besides being extremely strong it is also very light. It is found in high-performance parts, like aircraft wings, bits of supercars and the frames of pricey mountain bikes. But if work by Germany’s BMW proves successful, it could also become the material of choice to mass-produce electric cars.
The Bavarian carmaker plans to launch a new plug-in electric car in 2013. It will be one of the first designed from scratch to use an electric motor rather than being converted from an existing model. Reducing the weight of this four-seater car, known as the Megacity concept, will be crucial to improving its performance and range. So BMW is planning to use no steel at all. The Megacity will be built as two modules: an aluminium chassis will contain the electric drive-system and battery, and a body made almost entirely of carbon fibre will be fitted onto it. …

“There’s some things you just have to live with. Like 12 cars camping outside your house, and when you wake up in the morning, they’re going to follow you wherever you go. It helps that I live in Valencia. It eliminates some. But they’re still here,” Taylor Lautner on the downside of fame, GQ Magazine [...]
Bettye LaVette: New Album Tour With Robert Plant
NEW ALBUM COVERS PINK FLOYD, STONES, BEATLES, ZEPPELIN AND MORE
Bettye LaVette |
Bettye LaVette has been invited by Robert Plant to open a string of dates in July. These shows come on the heels of her forthcoming new album, Interpretations: The British Rock Songbook, arriving May 25 on Anti- Records, which includes LaVette’s rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “All My Love.”
Produced by LaVette, Rob Mathes and Michael Stevens, Interpretations is a 12-song journey through compositions by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Traffic and Pink Floyd, among others, before concluding right where the very idea for the new album started: Bettye’s rendition of The Who’s “Love Reign O’er Me” from the 2008 Kennedy Center Honors, which appears as an extended bonus track.
About the new album, Sheryl Crow attests, “I’ve been on the same stage with Bettye twice in the last year and have been captivated each time. On her new album, Bettye finds her own way into these legendary songs yet still is able to remain faithful to the spirit in each of them. Her unique phrasing and raw honesty enables us to appreciate the words in these classics in a whole new way. Just a master class in song interpretation.”

Robert Plant |
Robert Plant has confirmed a 12 city North American tour. Beginning in July, this first leg of shows, which will be followed by further dates in the fall, will preview material from a new album. Featuring a diverse group of musicians – Patty Griffin, vocals; Darrell Scott, multi-instrumentalist/vocals; Byron House, bass/vocals; Marco Giovino, drums and percussion/vocals; including co-producer Buddy Miller, guitar/vocals. The album is set for release on Rounder, late summer/early fall.
Kicking off in Memphis on July 13 (see full tour schedule below) the tour will feature Plant and the ‘Band of Joy’ – the same musicians who also appear and play on the album.
Says Plant: “It’s been a blast working on these new songs… and I’m enjoying such creativity and vitality. It’s been a remarkable change of direction for all of us and as a group we all seem to have developed a new groove.”
In recent weeks Plant has been in the studio working on the planned release, which will be his first since Raising Sand, the multi-platinum, six-time Grammy winning collaboration with fellow Rounder artist Alison Krauss. Krauss has most recently been recording with her longtime band Union Station, and will be touring with them this summer. The pair do not expect to announce a new album or tour in the coming year, though when asked about the collaboration, Plant says: “Oh yes, Alison and I get together quite often… and sometimes we dance.”

Salvador Santana Solo Album
SALVADOR SANTANA DEBUTS SOLO ALBUM, COLLABORATES WITH MONEY MARK, DEL, AND GZA
Keyboard City Out February 2 Via Quannum/Various Music
Salvador Santana |
Music is a burst of choices. Not only what note to play when and with what instrument, but whether to play a note at all. Salvador Santana, the 26-year-old keyboardist, vocalist, composer, and songwriter with strong Bay Area roots, knows what it means to navigate the infinite options of music. His 2008 project with the Salvador Santana Band pursued the scope of his ability. But for Santana, it wasn’t enough. He has no choice but to push himself further.
Collaboration has always been the centerpiece of his creations, and this passion manifested his solo debut Keyboard City around the inspirations of a few legends: Bay Area MC/producer Del tha Funky Homosapien, who helped hone in Santana’s writing skills, Beastie Boys studio wizard Money Mark, and GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan. The legendary Wu founder rallied support around the album by featuring himself on a remix of the title track “Keyboard City” earlier this fall. Stream the track here.
Santana’s long anticipated debut hits the streets February 2, 2010 followed by extensive touring with his keyboard-laden band, featuring a three-person keyboard assault with Santana at the head.
Money Mark inspired Santana in a beautiful way during the creation process. “With all the people I’ve ever collaborated with or just working by myself, I have never produced so many ideas into songs as I have during these Money Mark sessions. That guy is just a machine,” said Santana. Additionally, Money Mark opened up a new way of recording that was previously unknown to Santana. “He has mentored me by showing me that it’s cool to be all over the place. It’s cool to sit there and work on a song, then out of nowhere, interrupt that flow and work on another idea… to just go with it.”
Santana is pushed by a need to step out of his comfort zone in a quest for new ideas. Easy going and humble, Santana exudes the Bay Area vibe. He began playing the drums at age three – sitting on his father’s lap, controlling the snare and tom, as his father worked the hi-hat and kick drum – but his true love was discovered when he began taking piano lessons when he was six. Later, he studied at San Francisco’s heralded School of the Arts before attending Cal Arts in Valencia, CA. His education, passion and lineage has turned Santana into a monster on the keys, leading him to say that he’s “a musician first, a vocalist second and a performer second-and-a-half.”
Music truly thrives in Santana’s veins. His maternal grandfather was blues pioneer Saunders King and his paternal grandfather was the internationally celebrated violinist and mariachi bandleader Jose Santana. And, of course, his father, and frequent collaborator, is 10 time Grammy-winning, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Carlos Santana (Salvador co-wrote “El Farol” from 1999′s smash album Supernatural). With his upcoming solo project, however, Salvador Santana will truly become a brand of his own.
“With the Salvador Santana Band record I was very passive and insecure, only because I wasn’t listening to my gut, allowing my second opinions to get to me. Knowing what I know now, I could have played that part better. I don’t ever want to have that feeling ever again,” he says.
In addition to his musical desires, Santana has worldly efforts on his mind. After a trip to South Africa and inspiring work with Artists for a New South Africa (ANSA), something triggered inside of Santana to make sure his music wasn’t only about personal glory. Once the record is released and he begins touring the project, Salvador will be posting various non-profit organizations on his website that will receive a percentage of the profits. “I want to use music in a positive way, and give back to people in need. There can never be enough people who do that.” And there can never be enough musicians pushing their art to the brink.

Devendra Banhart: Album and Tour Dates
Devendra Banhart |
Devendra Banhart and band will be playing U.S. tour dates this November in celebration of the release of What Will We Be, his sixth full-length release. Devendra Banhart exploded on the international music scene in 2002 quickly winning a coterie of devoted fans as well as an unusually hefty amount of critical kudos right from the outset. The new album was recorded in a sleepy Northern California town throughout the spring of 2009 co-produced by Devendra and Paul Butler (from U.K. outfit Band Of Bees). What Will We Be is his label debut for Warner Bros. Records.
Stream What Will We Be HERE.
The touring lineup will be Devendra on vocals and guitar; Noah Georgeson (producer of Banhart’s last two albums) on guitar and backing vocals, Greg Rogove (Priestbird) on drums and backing vocals; Luckey Remington (The Pleased) on bass and vocals and Rodrigo Amarante (Los Hermanos, Little Joy) on guitar and backing vocals. This is the same lineup that recorded What Will We Be. All the musicians involved played a part in arranging the songs recorded. Devendra and company took up residence in a private home, North of San Francisco, and set up a recording studio in it.
What Will We Be has a sunny, breezy feel with performances that evoke warm, lazy afternoons spent with good friends. The album is dominated by powerfully melodic, mid-tempo numbers played with relaxed expertise. But there’s also ambitious stylistic range displayed with the inclusion of evanescent ballads like “Meet Me At Lookout Point,” the epic riff-rocker “Rats,” sprightly R&B flavored groovers on “Baby,” and the sultry Latin-flavored stunner “Brindo,” the Roxy-inspired “16th & Valencia, Roxy Music” among other pleasant surprises.
Devendra Banhart has emerged as one of the most fascinating, unpredictable and inspiring artists of his generation and with What Will We Be he continues to surprise and delight an ever-increasing audience of fans and critics alike.

DEVENDRA BANHART SET TO RELEASE WHAT WE WILL BE ON WARNER BROS. RECORDS
![]() Devendra Banhart |
Devendra Banhart exploded on the international music scene in 2002 quickly winning a coterie of devoted fans as well as an unusually hefty amount of critical kudos right from the outset. His latest release is What Will We Be, recorded in a sleepy Northern California town throughout the Spring of 2009 co-produced by Devendra and Paul Butler (from U.K. outfit Band Of Bees). The international media’s acclaim and the size of his audience both at home and abroad earned by his debut Oh Me Oh My The Way The Day Goes By The Sun Is Setting Dogs Are Dreaming Lovesongs Of The Christmas Spirit was impressive to begin with and has increased dramatically with each subsequent release. What Will We Be is his label debut for Warner Brothers Records.
The basic recording lineup – with Banhart on vocals and guitar; Noah Georgeson (producer of Banhart’s last two albums, Little Joy, Bert Jansch and Joanna Newsom) on guitar and backing vocals, Greg Rogove (Priestbird) on drums and backing vocals; Luckey Remington (The Pleased) on bass and vocals and Rodrigo Amarante (Los Hermanos, Little Joy) on guitar and backing vocals – also included all the musicians involved played a part in arranging the songs recorded.
What Will We Be has a sunny, breezy feel with performances that evoke warm, lazy afternoons spent with good friends. The album is dominated by powerfully melodic, mid-tempo numbers played with relaxed expertise. But there’s also ambitious stylistic range displayed with the inclusion of evanescent ballads like “Meet Me At Lookout Point,” the epic riff-rocker “Rats” sprightly R&B flavored groovers on “Baby,” and the sultry Latin-flavored stunner “Brindo,” the Roxy-inspired “16th & Valencia, Roxy Music” among other pleasant surprises.
This is the second album Banhart has recorded with the same crew of players and all involved sound thoroughly comfortable, familiar and in synch with one another. It’s accomplished, focused and straightforwardly handsome. Where Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon sounded like friends brainstorming, sharing off-beat ideas and licks, What Will We Be sees them first and foremost addressing the particular needs of each individual composition. The vocal arrangements are noticeably more intricate yet crystalline with lush harmonies running through many of these numbers. The instrumental performances are still relaxed but very much on target.
