Devendra Banhart: Album and Tour Dates

Devendra Banhart

Devendra Banhart and band will be playing U.S. tour dates this November in celebration of the release of What Will We Be, his sixth full-length release. Devendra Banhart exploded on the international music scene in 2002 quickly winning a coterie of devoted fans as well as an unusually hefty amount of critical kudos right from the outset. The new album was recorded in a sleepy Northern California town throughout the spring of 2009 co-produced by Devendra and Paul Butler (from U.K. outfit Band Of Bees). What Will We Be is his label debut for Warner Bros. Records.

Stream What Will We Be HERE.

The touring lineup will be Devendra on vocals and guitar; Noah Georgeson (producer of Banhart’s last two albums) on guitar and backing vocals, Greg Rogove (Priestbird) on drums and backing vocals; Luckey Remington (The Pleased) on bass and vocals and Rodrigo Amarante (Los Hermanos, Little Joy) on guitar and backing vocals. This is the same lineup that recorded What Will We Be. All the musicians involved played a part in arranging the songs recorded. Devendra and company took up residence in a private home, North of San Francisco, and set up a recording studio in it.

What Will We Be has a sunny, breezy feel with performances that evoke warm, lazy afternoons spent with good friends. The album is dominated by powerfully melodic, mid-tempo numbers played with relaxed expertise. But there’s also ambitious stylistic range displayed with the inclusion of evanescent ballads like “Meet Me At Lookout Point,” the epic riff-rocker “Rats,” sprightly R&B flavored groovers on “Baby,” and the sultry Latin-flavored stunner “Brindo,” the Roxy-inspired “16th & Valencia, Roxy Music” among other pleasant surprises.

Devendra Banhart has emerged as one of the most fascinating, unpredictable and inspiring artists of his generation and with What Will We Be he continues to surprise and delight an ever-increasing audience of fans and critics alike.

Railroad Earth Tour

Railroad Earth Takes the Both Coasts on Fall/Winter Tour

Railroad Earth

It’s no surprise that the band Railroad Earth took their name from Jack Kerouac’s flowing prose-poem, “October in the Railroad Earth.” Interspersed with memories of the past and the present, the story weaves a complex tapestry of impressions and reflections, all underlining the American history of the workingman. Much like Kerouac, Railroad Earth’s music captures the grit and soul of rural and urban America and translates it into something deeper than just music.

The six-piece ensemble crafts each song artfully, like a storyline in a novel about travel, wonderment, tragedy, and heartbreak. With the unusually soulful and deep writing and vocal delivery of principal songwriter, Todd Sheaffer, combined with instrumentation so colorful you might find them on the Appalachian Trail, Railroad Earth is bringing their slice of American culture on a hefty fall/winter tour spanning both coasts and every major market in between.

Beginning in late September, Railroad Earth will be doing a series of short tours with pivotal performances in various parts of the country. But unlike the speed trains in Kerouac’s novels, this Railroad Earth is in no hurry “to get there fast.”

Lotus: NYE in Philly

RINGING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH BROTHERLY LOVE

Lotus

Today Lotus announced a New Year’s eve run in Pennsylvania that will culminate with an epic New Year’s Eve show with MSTRKRFT at Philadelphia’s Electric Factory. Leading up to the big night, the band will stop at Mr. Small’s Theatre (Pittsburgh, PA) on December 29 and The Note (West Chester, PA) on December 30, both with support act Tigersapien.

The New Year’s Eve announcement comes as Lotus prepares to hit the road for a full season of touring. Lotus will break ground in a way that no other rock band has done prior – they are plotting a tour this fall that truly allows their legion of fans to pay-what-they-want for tickets. The Pay-What-You-Want-Tour (Oct 6 – Oct 14) featuring Lotus is an eight night run of shows in western U.S. states, sponsored by Ticketweb, that lets the fans decide how much their show ticket will cost. At the $15.00 Pay-What-You-Want level or higher, fans receive free digital downloads of the band’s two new EPs Feather on Wood and Oil on Glass, both to be released on October 6, 2009.

The Pay-What-You-Want dates are part of Lotus’ larger Fall Tour, running from early-October through the end of the year. Big stops include performances at Denver’s Fillmore, NYC’s Terminal 5 (w/ support acts RJD2 and Junior Boys DJ set), Baltimore’s Sonar, Chicago’s Vic Theatre, the Electric Factory in Philly for New Year’s Eve and others. Lotus brings out several must-see opening acts for many of these shows, including Break Science feat Adam Dietch, The Egg (from London, UK), Big in Japan, Big Gigantic, RJD2, Junior Boys, and more. Don’t miss a few special small shows: here’s the scoop – the Denver Fillmore show is being bundled with the Quixote’s show (to get into Quixotes, you must buy the Fillmore ticket), and also, for New Years, Lotus presents another “bundled” show at The Note in West Chester, PA (to purchase a ticket for The Note, you must purchase a bundled Electric Factory ticket).

Downloads of both new EPs will be bundled with advance ticket purchases for select Fall Tour dates including the two Denver shows, both Boston shows and the New Year’s run. The material on both Feather on Wood and Oil on Glass can be directly traced back to Lotus’ 2008 full-length release, Hammerstrike. A number of songs were recorded that didn’t find their way onto Hammerstrike (either they hadn’t been finished by deadlines or they weren’t coalescing with the sound of that project), but after finishing the album, Lotus decided to revisit these tracks, and the results are extraordinary. Feather on Wood is sunnier with a laid-back vibe, yet not afraid of big rock beauty, while Oil on Glass is darker in character, with more head-nodding.

Porcupine Tree: Incident

Porcupine Tree Unravel New Album The Incident Due September 22

Porcupine Tree

Inspired by a flashing road sign that reduced a horrible traffic accident to the antiseptic phrase “POLICE-INCIDENT,” British prog act Porcupine Tree‘s front man Steven Wilson composed the 55 minute, 14-track song cycle as a reflection on other “incidents” reported in the media and news.

The different topics include – the evacuation of teenage girls from a religious cult in Texas, a family terrorizing its neighbors, a body found floating in a river by some people on a fishing trip, and more. Each song is written in the first person and tries to humanize the detached media reportage.

Personal incidents that profoundly affected Wilson, have also been included on the new album include a lost childhood friendship, a seance, his first love, and the day that he decided to give up secure employment to follow his dream of making music.

The new album is in typical Porcupine Tree fashion and as presumed the band ranges effortlessly between art-rock and acoustic psychedelica, prog, and metal. Listen to an album preview medley at the band’s MySpace page.

The Incident will also come with a second CD of four songs that developed from band’s writing sessions last year but which are conceptually independent from the set of songs on the first disc. It will also be released as a 5.1 surround mix and as a limited special edition that comes with two books of artwork related to the album encased in a slipcase.

Lou Barlow: Album & Tour

Lou Barlow Readies His Solo Release And Preps For Tour

Lou Barlow

On October 6, Merge Records will release Lou Barlow‘s new album, Goodnight Unknown. In the four years since his career-redefining, mostly acoustic record Emoh, Lou Barlow has reunited with Dinosaur Jr. and reissued three of Sebadoh‘s classic albums. But as the brilliant new Goodnight Unknown illustrates, he’s hardly living in the past. Borrowing the live-band energy of Dinosaur Jr. and the stylistic reach of Sebadoh, Barlow has built on Emoh‘s full production and written a set of immediate, melodic pop songs that Lou describes as, “a cross between my later work with Folk Implosion and my earlier work with Sebadoh… to my ears, anyway.”

From the surging opening track “Sharing” to the surprisingly soulful performances on “The Right,” Goodnight Unknown benefits from Barlow’s tunefulness and his decision to record the record relatively quickly, with old friends and new. The MelvinsDale Crover adds inspired drum work throughout, and Goodnight Unknown‘s urgent sound owes just as much to frequent Barlow collaborator Imaad Wasif (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Alaska!). The record’s considerable power also stems from the new talents on board, including producer Andrew Murdock and Lisa Germano.

Lou Barlow + The Missingmen will be on tour throughout the fall opening for Dinosaur Jr. The Missingmen are guitarist Tom Watson and drummer Raul Morales. Lou “stole” them from Mike Watt for this tour, and is excited to be bringing you the full band experience of Goodnight Unknown.
