Skype to Offer Group Video Collaboration Feature: Report

Skype the week of May 10 will introduce a group video chat feature that will help it better compete with video collaboration offerings from the likes of Cisco, Polycom and LifeSize. The new Skype feature will first go into a free beta program, but the company will begin charging for it in the next three or four months, Skype officials said.

Tandberg T1 Telepresence Product Aimed at Smaller Groups

In the process of being bought by Cisco, Tandberg still is growing out its Total Telepresence product line. Tandberg is launching T1, an “immersive” video collaboration product that has all the features of its higher-end T3 brethren but is aimed at smaller groups and regional offices. Cisco announced Oct. 1 its plans to buy Tandberg for $3 billion.

LifeSize to Release Passport amid Cisco-Tandberg Deal

As Cisco looks to extend the reach of its high-definition video conferencing capabilities by buying Tandberg, rival LifeSize Communications is unveiling Passport, a device designed to bring HD video conferencing to small and midsize businesses, teleworkers and mobile employees. The Passport device is sized to fit into a small work environment, and the $2,499 price is designed to attract SMBs. LifeSize is also working with Skype to enable HD audio communications for Skype’s 480 million registered users.
