“Serbia has no ‘EU or Kosovo’ dilemma”
Serbia’s FM Vuk Jeremić told an Austrian magazine that it was “hard to imagine” Serbs would be forced to choose between EU membership and Kosovo. He told Vienna’s profil magazine that EU membership was Serbia’s most important goal, and that some EU states did not accept Kosovo as independent.
Lion of Vienna passes
Chatting to Vauxhall managing director Duncan Aldred, whose “monumental” sponsorship of all four UK home nations football teams is reputed to be worth around GBP100m (US$159m), the chief revealed he was a Bolton fan.
“My team is Bolton and I grew up there,” he said, while echoing the perennial hope of all football fans and why the sport will always have willing, if ultimately frustrated supporters. “It would be good to think we could get into Europe,” he added.
Well, Bolton are having something of a stellar season this year and if they do find themselves at the top table of European football, they could well dedicate the achievement to one Nat Lofthouse who sadly passed away this week.
Lofthouse OBE – the ‘Lion of Vienna’ – was a colossus of the Bolton and English game and a far cry from the pampered millionaires of today.
Here’s one quote from current Bolton manager Owen Coyle that seems to sum the man up: “It was never about Nat and always about Bolton Wanderers,” he said.
EU telecoms chief: Hungary may violate EU law
The European Union’s telecoms chief said on this week that Hungary’s new media law may violate EU laws on press freedom and broadcasting. This was highlighted in a statement issued in Vienna by the South and East Europe Media Organization (SEEMO).

Schumpeter: Mittel-management
Germany’s midsized companies have a lot to teach the world
MANAGEMENT gurus are constantly scouring the world for the next big idea. Thirty years ago they fixated on Japan. Today it is India. The more restless are already moving on to Peruvian or Zulu management. Yet in all this intellectual globe-trotting the gurus have sorely neglected the secrets of one of the world’s great economies. Germany is the world’s largest goods exporter after China despite high labour costs and a strongish euro. It is also stuffed full of durable companies that have survived hyperinflation and two world wars. Faber-Castell, a giant among pencilmakers, boasts that Bismarck was a customer.
Thankfully, a couple of management thinkers have defied the boycott on Germany. On November 18th Bernd Venohr, of the Berlin School of Economics and Law, gave a fascinating talk on the “secret recipe” of the country’s Mittelstand at the second annual Peter Drucker Forum in Vienna. Last year Hermann Simon, of Simon-Kucher & Partners, a consultancy, published an even more gripping sequel to his 1996 book on “Hidden Champions”. Put the two together and you get a good idea of the management theory at the heart of Germany’s success. …

Kyuss Reunites Without Josh Homme
THREE QUARTERS OF KYUSS REUNITE
![]() Kyuss |
Legendary stoner rock band Kyuss is reuniting without original guitarist and Queens of the Stone Age
main man Josh Homme. The lineup includes vocalist John Garcia, bassist Nick Oliveri,
and drummer Brant Bjork. Guitarist Bruno Fevery will be stepping in to replace Homme, and the
band is calling
themselves Kyuss
Lives.
In an interview with Blabbermouth, Homme discussed the
possibility of a Kyuss reunion, saying “The offers come in all the
time. They’re getting more and more expensive, and more and more elaborate. The money is crazy, but I’ve never
been tempted – I don’t really care about the money, I never have. That’s not what Kyuss was about, so to punctuate
the end of our sentence with that would be blasphemy…Kyuss has such a great history that it would be a total error.
I like that nobody saw
Kyuss, and that it was largely misunderstood. That sounds like a legend forming to me. I’m too proud of it to rub
my dick on it.”
